let's go to action news chief meteorologist bryan scofield and 'weather first.' bryan? a wind advisory is in effect for the colorado river valley and lake mead through early tomorrow morning. winds in the advisory area are expected to gust in the 40-50mph range. this is due to surface high pressure area to our south. those two will combine to create some stronger winds straight down the colorado river valley and even a couple stronger gusts in las vegas. these winds are expected to be generally light at the surface, but will rapidly increase with height so at around 500 feet (or near building height) winds will likely be sustained around 10- 15mph and gust to nearly 25mph throughout the night. action news is following the latest developments out of new york developments out of new

a man is in custody for reportedly planning an attack member overseas to attack revelers as an initiation into the group. meanwhile, there are more police officers on patrol in times square than ever. 6-thousand heavily armed officers are on-duty...protecting the one-million people expected in the big apple. the cause of the fire is still unknown. the fire broke out just across the street from one of the three fireworks displays planned in the country. new year celebrations continued as scheduled. an action news update neighbors are speaking out after a valley man was stabbed this morning after walking into his home and finding a robber inside. action news reporter marissa kynaston joins us live from where it happened with the latest. i was able to talk with family earlier this morning-- they say the man who got stabbed is still in the hospital-- but he is awake and talking. police say the robber broke into the home around five this morning-- thinking nobody was home. but as he was inside-- the man who lived there came home from work-- catching the robber off guard. the two got into a fight-- thats when the robber stabbed the homeowner-- and took off. now-- neighbors say theres been a string of crime in the neighborhood.

been having some breakins with the neighbors and now i guess we've had a stabbing so i guess we have to think about who's coming through and be more aware the man who broke into this home is still on the run. reporting live near craig and walnut-- mk-- ch13an. new information now on the fire at the radioactive waste dump in beatty. authorities say rainwater seeping into the corroded and leaking barrels caused the explosion at the site. state officials now have to determine whether blame should be placed and what needs to be done to prevent another blast. no one was injured and no radioactivity was detected after the blast and fire back in october. a firefighter from las vegas fire and rescue had to be treated for injuries today after falling off a roof while fighting a fire. the firefihter was checked out by paramedics on scene and was okay. the home was abandoned and authorities say the fire appears to have been started by squatters.

to 2016 a but some parts of the world have already celebrated new year's check out the beuatiful fireworks display at the victoria harbor in hong kong. and this was the scene in new zealand where fireworks were launched off the top of the sky tower. over 25-hundred individual fireworks were used to ring in the new year. a terrifying flight aboard an air canada plane. violent turbulence forced the pilot to make an emergency landing. 21-passengers were hurt. take a look at these new photos from inside the flight... you can see oxygen masks deployed. there is trash and peoples' belongings on the floor. it all happened on a flight

pressure area which has shifted directly to the north of the las vegas valley and a low pressure area to our south. those two will combine to create some stronger winds straight down the colorado river valley and even a couple stronger gusts in las vegas. these winds are expected to be generally light at the surface, but will rapidly increase with height so at around 500 feet (or near building height) winds will likely be sustained around 10- 15mph and gust to nearly 25mph throughout the night. that will mean there will be some chilly gusts mixed down to the surface through the new years celebrations, but will likely have a bigger impact on the fireworks. fire officials have said that winds above 10mph will curtail fireworks launch and the winds at firing levels will be very near those criteria. for the rest of the forecast, the weather goes even more active as a series of 3 increasingly intense and cold storms take aim at southern
