tv Morning Blend ABC January 8, 2016 9:00am-10:00am PST
9:00 am
p p p, you got it check it out. >> definitely. thank you so much for tuning in this morning. i'm dao vu. >> i'm shawn tempesta. good morning. >> coming up today on the "morning blend," it's a great time to head to mount charleston to enjoy the snow. but be careful on your way up. a new alliance that keeps drivers safe. >> plus a bottle of fun. >> we're -- it's tomorrow. >> i heard some pirates in the building way down the hall. first up, entertainer susan anton is calling the smith center home this weekend. she's no stranger to the strip, having performed for many years in the city. and now she's back better than ever. >> and the show is called already home. susan is with us live. >> you're here. >> i'm here. i'm already home. i'm not leaving. >> this is my couch. there is a rip on it. >> we're so excited.
9:01 am
house it. it's such a great venue and finally i called my rep and said i got to play this room. so i have this show called already home that i've been l.a.-base band. now i'm going to do it here in las vegas with some of las vegas' best musicians. keith nelson, and many others. i love you guys. i stole them from clint holmes, but it's great music that
9:02 am
our lives that have affected us in profound ways. there is a bruce springstein song about 9-11. there is kenny loggins, bob dylan, the beatles. provocative. it. the songs? down. but for me, i choose the material if it resonates in my soul and if i relate to it in a personal way, like where was i on 9-11 and i heard bruce's song, i say, then i know that's a feeling that will probably resonate for the audience. and also it helps to connect with rhythmically. but the lyrics are everything. it was hard to narrow it down. we've got 17 killer songs. >> let's talk about your stage show and how it evolved over the years. because 20 years ago you introduced your first cabaret
9:03 am
>> this is show light not cabaret. i think -- the biggest evolution for me is watching myself grow through the years. when i started out as an entertainer, i was younger and eager to please everybody else. the audience was more my parents' age. so i catered more to that demographic. now that audience of the music that i love as a kid growing up in the '60s and '70s, that's me now. so i feel more liberated, more free to really be my authentic self up there on the stage. i don't feel like i have to cater to anybody. i have to be honest and truthful and so the material comes from a very real place, organically for me. and that's really freeing. i think that's when the craft becomes its most fun. >> you've been so lucky to do so many things, sing on stage, be in a film, be in a production. menopause the musical. do you have a favorite type of production you like to do?
9:04 am
but i like what i'm going to be doing with the band. cabaret jazz is high on the list. but broadway, i've been blessed to be at the will rogers follies on broadway. and also here in las vegas, i did hair spray at the luxor with the original broadway cast. it was so much fun. there is nothing like that community of fellow actors that come and do a show every night and celebrate the audience, celebrate the material. that's a treasure. >> the beauty is that obviously a new york broadway, so much history there. but vegas seems to be getting its own sort of broadway as well. there are so many different productions here. >> the smith center is so -- the arts changed my life. when i was a young girl, it wasn't like i excelled in school. you did it because you had to. but didn't capture my heart. and then all of a sudden, i was in new york city.
9:05 am
i was at radio city music hall and i will never forget the rockettes came out on the stage and they started dancing and then the screen dropped down and julie andrews was singing the hills are alive with the sound of music and i thought, that's what i want to do. that resonated in my soul. and i hadn't had the experience of the arts, i don't know where i would have found how i fit in. so now with our beautiful smith center and the programs that they have for the children of our community to come and be exposed to the best that there is from broadway, it's so stimulating and right here in our pack yard. it's so wonderful. >> what advice would you give o girls watching you right now that want to break into the business? >> training is everything. i didn't have a lot of training. i just got lucky and on pure instincts. so i got my training as i got older. but i think the most important thing is to stay true to yourself and know that there is nobody else out there like you. so don't try to be anybody other than yourself.
9:06 am
black, while, whatever you are that's unique and wonderful, celebrate it. >> amen. >> thank you so much. >> thank you. >> thank you. i'm so excited. come, everybody! >> don't miss susan anton cabaret jazz at the smith center. show times 7:00 p.m. both nights. for tickets, call the number or check out the web site on your screen. winter road safety, the new web site that helps drivers stay safe on their community to mount charleston. >> join in on the fun for pirate day.

9:11 am
1700 feet to bring sunken treasure back up from a ship called the s.s. republic. you can learn all about ship wrecks all over the world and there is some interactivity. you can see it's really a beautiful exhibit. there is a whole room that's a wall of bottles in a has been recovered from ship wrecks all over the world. >> are there any love letters or notes in the bottles? >> pirate 101. >> do you call what you just said the boot or the booty? >> the plundered booty. >> commandeered. >> relocating. >> over 500 actual artifacts part of this exhibit. there is gold bars and gold coins and you can't take those home, of course. but it's really an interesting exhibit. definitely worth coming out to
9:12 am

>> good. there is a myriad of products you have. let's begin with e prime. what is e prime? >> it's a minimally invasive procedure that we have been doing at my tight face. and we continue to do it because it's quite revolutionary treatment. 'cause we can target the heat into the face where there is sphering aming and laxity of the skin. so as you see in the picture, while we do the treatment, we can actually see a visible tightening of the lower face. and the wrinkles actually disappearing during the procedure. >> it's kind of like an iron for your face. >> kind of. >> you can take out the wrinkles. >> yes. but the biggest benefit is that it produces instant collagen and elastic, which is what many women go to doctors and anybody, practitioners, to get rid of the wrinkles. that's instantly. the fillers that go into the face. this is you actually producing
9:17 am
it produces from your own body. so it's's really beneficial now. to you. your complexion starts to grow. unlike fillers, you get instant results, but your complexion doesn't begin to grow. >> is this an invasive procedure? >> minimally invasive, yes. >> so you're talking a couple days out? >> three to five days down time, yes. then you're going to be fine. you're going to forget that you beautiful. >> as opposed to the ginsu knives coming at you. >> exactly. >> you can't go to the grocery >> exactly. and the age group that it works best for is women between 50 and 70 because they have let their skin go to that severe point where it's lost a lot of elasticity and a lot of wrinkles have formed. especially people that live in hot climates. so this really helps. it takes off let's just say without exaggerating, at least three to five years. amazing.
9:18 am
>> this is another treatment we do with a machine. and it tightens and contours the face. >> that's not the same woman. >> yes, it is. >> no way. >> it's the same woman. >> unbelievable. >> and it is noninvasive treatment. so she has no down time. she probably has done -- i can't exactly remember how many, but at least two treatments. >> that's the key to this stuff. with the exception of e prime, you have to go back a few times results.

we'll be right with all the wintery weather, the mountains have become a ski and snowboarding paradise. but before you hit the road, prepare yourself for that drive because it can be hazardous. >> that's right. here to talk about the mount charleston winter alliance is loy hixson and naaman horn. how are you? >> thank you. >> let's start with this winters alliance. how did this get started?
9:37 am
vegas for a while knows, when it snows on mounts charleston, there is no snow in the valley. everyone flocks up to the mountains to recreate in the snow, which is great. we love to have them there. but it can get a little crazy. there is a lot of traffic, a lot of people using the resource over a short period of time. and there are a number of different agencies and organizations that are involved in the management of the area. so rather than kind of messaging separate and managing it separately, we decided to all get together and have a joint effort to manage the mountains. >> is this for people who are working the mountains and keeping it safe or for people who are visitors and tourists? >> it's the visitors. because us that are up there on a regular basis, we know what to expect. we understand that the temperature is going to drop dramatically, that the different texture with the snow is going to cause a different type of traveling up there. so we're aware of it. but a lot of times, especially when you get one of these holiday weekends like we've seen the last two, drivers don't realize that. you have some visitors and
9:38 am
and don't realize that yeah, temperatures in the valley, definitely don't reflect what's up there in the mountains and we want them to be prepared. >> no question. 25,000 people can head up there during a weekend. >> yes. >> how do people prepare for that? >> that's what we want people to make sure, that they are prepared, i like that you say that. when they head up there, they're not realizing that my car, there are no services up there. so i have to make sure that my tank is full of gas, that i have extra water, blankets should something happen, of course, themselves. they go up there. what we have been seeing is they dress like they would down here 50, 60 degrees. and you head up there where it's in the teens, you could be overcome by the lower temperatures and put yourself in a medical emergency. >> if you're driving up there and see ten cars behind you and you're leading the pack, are you supposed to pull over or how does that work up there? >> the law says that yeah, if you have more than five vehicles behind you, that you're required to pull over when you get to a safe area. we have been leaning toward we
9:39 am
there because that is one of the -- >> some people go under and that causes a traffic jam. >> when you're lower toward the bottom of the mountsen, it's 50 miles an hour. when you get up closer to where there is more snow, it's 35. but our concern is that people have been speeding. we have been seeing these crashes. you have that momentum coming down. if you're going up, not much of an issue. but yeah, the law does state if you have more than five vehicles behind you, that you pull over in a safe area and let them pass. >> you got to be careful about where you pull over because there could be a lot of snow and the traction trying to get back on the road. >> yes. that was an issue we were seeing is that people are going up not realizing chains are required or snow tires or four wheel drive. >> where do you get the chains? >> you can go to any local department store, tire stores. you have some of your local multi-purpose stores that will have them. even on the super net. the one thing if you get these chains, make sure you know how to put them on before you get to the mountains.
9:40 am
hour, you finally get it on and a exhausted and are like we want to go home. you ran out of gas and you kind of ruin your whole day. >> let's talk about some fun things that we can do up in the mountains. what do you recommend for people who have not gone up there? >> there is lots of opportunities to play in the snow. some people haven't seen snow in their lives and just want to go threw and make a snowman and get their hands wet and throw a snowball. you can also go do skiing. a lot of people like to go sledding. there is lots of place to sled. wherever there is good snow, you can sled. we do recommend there is at least foot of snow on the ground and you avoid sledding close to roadways and parking lots. lot of people get up there and they'll get into the parking lots and that's a dangerous situation. >> are there leash laws up there? >> for pets? >> for humans, no. >> do you have to have your dog on a leash? >> some of the regulations do
9:41 am
you don't want them to start interacting with other people if they get scared or spooked and they end up having some bit. but also because that is an open area. a lot of wildlife is still moving around. you don't want your pet disappearing. so having them on a leash, keeping them controlled, we definitely recommend it and the law says if you're in an open area like that that you are required to keep them contained. >> good to know. >> great having you here. really smart to have an alliance like this. if the rest of government could do this, welder perfect! >> we can work together. this is how it starts. >> keep safe heading to the slopes. if you want to learn more about the alliance and get updated weather forecasts and road conditions, visit mtcharlestonwinter.com. >> up next, what's on deck for you this week? we've got 13 ideas. >> meantime, vegasmorningblend.com with a link to the web site and so much
