that's just not true. often, the best thing we can do is turn down the volume. when the sound is quieter, you can actually hear what someone else is saying. and that can make a world of difference. of course, that doesn't mean we won't have strong disagreements, we will. and as we usher in this new era, republicans will stand up for our beliefs. if we held the white house, taxes would be lower for working families. and we'd put the brakes on runaway spending and debt. we would encourage american innovation and success instead of demonizing them. so, our economy would truly soar and good jobs would be available across our country. we would reform education so it worked best for students, parents and teachers, not washington bureaucrats and union bosses. we would end a disastrous health
7:31 pm
reforms that lowered costs and actually let you keep your doctor. we would respect differences in modern families, but we would insist on respect for religious liberty, as a cornerstone of our democracy. we would recognize the importance of the separation of powers and honor the constitution in its entirety, and, yes, that includes the second and tenth amendments. we would make international agreements that were celebrated in israel and protested in iran, not the other way around. and rather than just thanking our brave men and women in uniform, we would actually strengthen our military. so both our friends and our enemies would know that america seeks peace. but when we fight wars, we win them. we have big decisions to make. our country is being tested. but we've been tested in the past. and our people have always risen
7:32 pm
we have all the guidance we need to be safe and successful. our forefathers paved the way for us. let's take their values and their strengths and rededicate ourselves to doing whatever it takes to keep america the greatest country in the history of man. and woman. thank you, good night, and god bless. >> nice light touch there at the end from governor nickykki haley. packed a lot into nine minutes there, including the republican agenda going forward in this presidential campaign. i want to go to hugh hewitt, though. i was really struck with what she said at the beginning, hugh, all the energy in this presidential race and the republican primary has been for the outsider candidates, the candidates running against washington and haley aligned herself with those sentiments. >> oh, she was terrific. that was a star tour there, and i think -- i'm so glad she brought up mother emanuel church
7:33 pm
victims of the shooter, but she went on from there to demonstrate why you could see a cruz/haley, a trump/haley, a bush/haley ticket. gift gifts, a wonderful personal story, and i'm she captain haley, her army husband, is applauding right now. those are tricky things. you don't really want to give the after the state of the union address, it can really cause a >> that's right. she did an excellent job of balancing out the competing factions inside the republican party. >> i think absolutely she did. i was struck -- i don't think i would see a trump/haley ticket. much of what she said in here -- i was struck how similar her obama said. she talked about the angry voices, the people that try to pit us against each other, much president had. and she said, a lot of what donald trump is saying, we as republicans don't agree with. she had red meat in there for
7:34 pm
needed to have in the course of that. i thought she did a good job. these are very hard to do. she auditioned for vp tonight, she's on the list. >> also told cokie roberts, an immigrant story, an american story. >> she's talked about growing up in rural south carolina, as an indian-american. you can imagine. and there is a fay mouls story about her that when she was, you she's nice-looking and she was going for miss south carolina and there was a white miss south carolina and a black miss south carolina in that era and she was not allowed to be either. so, she's learned that lesson of what it is to be the other. >> so, david muir, as we come away from both speeches tonight, the lines drawn, the debate framed for the rest of this year. >> yeah, and some of the common themes, as you point out, governor haley saying, if you turn down the noise, george, you can actually hear others speaking, get something done. you heard the president talk about his regret that the rancor's only increased during
7:35 pm
and the speaker of the house paul ryan saying today, he looks at this president not as his enemy, but as he adversary. it's not a shifting of the course here, but perhaps a slight change in temperature and a recognition that the rhetoric, particularly on the campaign trail that everyone is witness witnessing, is extraordinarily heated and the president hinted that he's been following perhaps all thought. >> well, he has to follow, because he knows so much of his legacy depends on having a democrat suck seed him.ceed him. so much of his executive actions that could be easily overturned by the next president. one of the things, we saw cutaway shots there of senator bernie sanders tonight. perhaps the unlikely front-runner in iowa and new hampshire right now. and the president comes into the chamber tonight, uncertain about who is going to be the democratic standard bearer. >> yeah, i think a big message of this speech, running throughout all, is that america
7:36 pm
keep in place the president'sicyies he portrayed as turning the country around. but the democratic race is a total muttle right now. hill little clintary clinton was expected to run towards a coronation. the bernie sanders surge is something to watch. you heard vice president biden going out of his way to praise bernie sanders and offering what might -- what some in the clinton camp saw as faint praise for hillary clinton. >> you think the president will stay out of the primary fight? >> yes, i think he will. but at the end of the day, george, when we see him at the democratic convention, once again, i think he will motivate a new generation of americans to find their cements at the table. he did a great job, and so did nikki haley, really. >> a nice job all around. martha raddatz, we know this is going to be a national security >> it will indeed. and the president touched on that, but there's so much happening right now, george, there's isis, there's afghanistan, we still have 10,000 troops in afghanistan.
7:37 pm
back to iowa as the president said in the beginning. >> see if the american sailors are released by the iranians, as well. thank you all very much. it's been quite a night here in washington. i'll see you tomorrow on "gma."to catch a suspect in a stolen police car. she's going to kill somebody. what it took to track her down. plus... it's like the carpet has been and this has been insane. this is just crazy your chance at the powerball -1- point -5- billion dollars is on the line. and the lines to buy tickets have been staggering. to our right.. the primm lotto store.. and on the left.. the line outside the nipton trading post. hundreds of people were there.. patiently waiting in a line that wrapped all the way around the store.
