building by someone with a gun. training because of the increase in active shooter situations around the country.. some small businesses here in the valley are taking precautions.. and preparing for the worst. a training session was held today.... by the chamber of commerce and law enforcement. action news reporter..... marissa kynaston tells us.... how a tragic event years ago..... helped encourage one business owner.... to go to the training. sot carol ong, mdl group ceo that was something that will be with me a very long time. it may have been 15 years ago-- but carol ong remembers this-- like it was yesterday. a man walked into the albertsons near sahara and valley view-- killing an employee-- then himself. ong is the property manager of that grocery store. sot ong clearly devastating to the employees of the grocery store thats why she's here today-- she says she wished her employees had active shooter training several years ago. and now-- just over a month after a man walked into a san bernardino company party-- and killed 14 people-- this type of training-- is even more

-14-.... he asked people to shoot political leaders... including the president... and to use a wood-chipper. he pleaded not guilty.... to those charges... last june. we're down to less than two weeks before the iowa caucuses.. the frontrunners are feeling the heat.. and running hard for votes. republican donald trump was back on the campaign trail today after a big endorsement from sarah palin. trump did some stumping in iowa before joining the former alaska governor for an event in oklahoma. many political analysts say palin's endorsement is extremely valuable. dowd: keep in mind that sarah palin is more popular than any republican candidate running for president right now among republicans. on the democratic side.. a new poll shows bernie sanders with an almost insurmountable 30-point lead over hillary clinton in new hampshire. another shocker- 91 percent of new hampshire democrats have a favorable view of sanders.. compared to only 65 percent for clinton. and.. polling in iowa shows sanders is now within striking distance of winning.

nasdaq -5 sp500 -22 all of the big local gaming stocks lost ground again today. everyone down between 3 and 5%. the nation's largest health insurer expects to lose nearly a billion dollars over two years because of obamacare. united health group says it lost close to half-billion dollars last year.. and expects a bigger hit in 2016. the insurance giant blames higher than expected claims from enrollees in obamacare exchange programs.

expensive medical services are signing up during the so-called special enrollment period. now.. united health group says it's considering dropping out of all obamacare exchanges in 2017. a red flag for automakers as they look to boost sales. a new study by the university of michigan found more young adults are not getting their driver's licenses. slightly more than 75-percent of people ages 20 to 24 have a driver's license. that's down sharply from 1982.. when 90% of adults in that age group had a license. experts say one reason for the decline could be the rise in ride sharing services like uber and lyft.. which provide a reasonable option to driving for many young people. that's tonight's 'financial focus.' let's go to bryan scofield and 'weather first.' . another storm system is pushing onto the west coast right now

northern california and oregon. it'll basically work to throw high clouds over las vegas for thursday and friday, keeping temperatures mild but not bringing the chance for any rain just yet. temperatures will hang in the upper 50s to about 60 for the las vegas valley for thursday and friday. saturday another system will push into the area which will have a little more moisture and energy associated with it. that means there's a slight chance for rain showers with this weekend's storm especially saturday night as the tail end of the cold front drags through the area. ahead of the front winds will be pretty gusty with peak gusts to out of the southwest to 35mph or so with northwest winds gusting to 30mph as the front passes saturday night

their own rules.but... not everyone should drink them. in tonight's health minute... holly firfer looks at the dangers of energy drinks and children. energy drinks - they're cheap, high- octane, and readily available in stores maybe too readily available a recent study found that over 40% of all energy drink-related calls to poison control centers in the u-s were for kids under 6 - many of them suffering serious nervous system and heart symptoms. can or a bottle of an energy drink could have as much as 500mg of caffeine which is

so way higher than you'd want a child to have. sometimes these drinks aren't labeled well, so you don't see what the ingredients can be, including the high amounts of caffeine, and a the child may think it's the same as any type overconsumption for kids, and even adults varies from the minor... they could even be more serious like problems with your heart rhythym, where your heart is irregular, it beats too fast or even seizures. the risks are particularly high, she says, for kids who already take stimulant medications for things like a-d-h-d, and older kids who may mix the energy drinks with alcohol. but it's not just the caffeine and other stimulants raising concerns... the drinks are also often filled with sugar. (dr. jennifer shu, pediatrician) too much of that sugar can cause weight gain as well as (dr. fruit juice. you really don't need what's marketed as sports drinks with electrolytes unless you're doing some really vigorous physical exercise. for today's health minute, i'm holly firfer. and.. some good news for people here in the valley. the county is adding a third e-m-s provider.
