tv   Morning Blend  ABC  January 22, 2016 9:00am-10:00am PST

9:00 am
he'll be our host on valley view live today. he's so nice and does so much charity work. thank you for joining us on this friday. i'm dao vu. >> i'm shawn tempesta. good morning. >> coming up today, celebrity chefs battle it out in the kitchen all for charity. the dish on what to expect as we head into the kitchen. >> plus, caged no more, the movie that is raising awareness of the dangers of human trafficking. >> first, our topic for the day in just a minute, we're going to speak with a talented young man that lives here in vegas and he's already won numerous awards for film making before the age of 20. starting when he was five. so today we want to know what's the most creative thing you did in your youth. have you done anything? creative? >> i did a public access show when i was like 14. it was called "the show." the name wasn't very creative. but i interviewed britney spears in this thing and i was 14. i was behind the scenes at concerts.
9:01 am
ever since then, it's been downhill. now i'm here. today could i get a britney spears to appear? no. >> no. i, let's see. used to knit before it was popular. and i've crocheted. i don't know if you consider this creative, but tepeing people, toilet papering people. you have to think where you're going to throw the paper. it's kind of dangerous living on the edge because you don't want to get caught. kinds of fun. >> i think that's more petty crime. >> it has to be a crime if you get caught. >> that's a good lesson, children. remember, it's only a crime if you get caught. >> we didn't get caught. we were very good about it. christmas ornaments. i'm very crafty. it's a lot of fun. >> i made a -- i would take the couch cushions off of our couch >> oh, yeah. >> i was four, five years old. these were amazing. very intricate.
9:02 am
most creative things he did as a kid was filmed his own version of "jaws" in his backyard or somebody's backyard. they had a video camera. and he was the first to get killed off. >> okay. >> it ended sadly. >> trying to go back to the day. so my friend and i had a bunch of g.i. joes and there was this little hill in the projects where we were living. we had dug out this trench and like had a garden hose at one end and made like this army sort of situation in the dirt, which i thought was awesome. but as we were living in the projects, the people that managed the lawns there were not impressed. >> they did not like what you were doing. >> went over and cleaned it up. not a fan of that. having now being a homeowner and knowing how difficult it is to get grass to grow and stay there, i understand. >> looking back, do you do anything creative now? >> no. >> when you're a kid, you didn't really think of it as creative, but i guess it is. >> it's imaginative.
9:03 am
little more time. >> you don't have any money on your kids. >> you got to make things up. >> yeah. do it yourself. >> it all goes back to public access for me 'cause that's what i did every day coming out of junior high and high school is i'd go to the public access station, make television shows, all kinds of different shows and that's where i put all my energy. i don't know. ever since then -- >> gone downhill. no. >> creative socks. >> we want to here the most creative thing you did as a youth. you can share on facebook and twitter. go to our web site, click the links. >> we're going to talk to a guy truly creative. it's an issue so many kids face right now growing up. we're talking about bullying. >> that's right. hunter hopewell is a 40-time award winning film maker and he's still a student. 40 times. ridiculous. his latest focuses on cyber bullying with the hope kindness
9:04 am
take a look at it. >> so what's today's message? >> don't look at me. >> what's up, dork? no wonder you don't have any friends. you look like the hunchback of notre dame. hey, moron, what? you don't know the answers? how are you going to accomplish anything in life? what are you going to do, cry? like a baby? you don't even have half of it filled out. are you going to put d for dork? loser.
9:05 am
talking to you. >> wow. powerful stuff. hunter hopewell joins us now. how are you? >> very well. >> you won first place, there was a 14 to 18-year-old category called "the peace in the streets global film festival." tell us what this is about. >> this is an organization all about promoting peace and so my way to promote peace was through this anti-bully film i made, which was based off my personal experience being bullied my actually. >> so because of what you went through, you decided you wanted to create a film about it later? >> yeah. i mean, there is a lot of students, a lot of kids out there that go through cyber bullying and bullying, all forms of bullying. a big problem right now. and knowing what that feels like to be on the receiving end of that, i wanted to promote awareness of this, show students they're not alone and facing this and that there is hope. >> were you always bullied?
9:06 am
school. but this kind of made me realize that this might be something i could be good at. >> you channel your energy to it as well, which is great. >> exactly. >> it's so funny in high school, everyone has their role. it's like every high school has the same people, the same sort of things and this kind of sheds light on this, let's you know you're not alone. >> exactly. because of this film, you got to go to the u.n. >> i did. >> what? >> i don't know. >> yeah. so i was studying abroad in spain and i got this e-mail one day letting me know that i won in the 14 to 18-year-old category. >> awesome. >> they're like, you're going to get to go to the u.n. to meet with the ambassador, the former secretary general of the united nations. i had never been to new york before. >> so you just got the call or they called your parents? >> they e-mailed me. i was like awesome. all right. >> and how long is this film, since we haven't been able to see it all?
9:07 am
>> and you entered the film thinking -- actually you entered the film in different projects? >> yes. >> did you ever think it would win anything? >> no. i'm very glad that it did. what an experience. >> when did you pick up the camera for the first time? >> ever? >> yeah. >> 12. >> okay. so from 12. like you got the bug then. >> yeah. >> now you're 19. you've won 40 awards and you've been working with a ton of international brands as well. checking out your web site is one of them. >> yes. we worked with crayola. staples. we did a national commercial for. >> that's awesome. >> yeah. it's fun. >> so you did this 4 1/2 minute movie. did you cast all your friends? >> yeah. the bully in it is a very good friend of mine. he comes off as a great bully, but i promise you he's a great guy. >> heck of a shover. >> did you make them audition for this?
9:08 am
he was kind of the choice for the role. >> he's ominous perhaps. how do you manage all this so young? were you able to -- when i was doing public access stuff after school was garbage. that's good. >> i did. the broadcast program at coronado high school is terrific and really inspired me and made me realize what i want to do for the rest of my life. >> awesome. >> and your message to people who went through the same thing that you did? >> there is hope and, you know, you're not alone in facing this. >> if you stick it out, you'll win about 40 awards at the age of 19 and then be awesome. you'll be able to wear vests and have awesome hair. >> what's your next project? >> i'm working on my first feature film. i should be shooting that this summer with some people from unlv where i go. >> okay. i'll be an extra. >> if you can make that happen.
9:09 am
rock comedyfilm.com. this is your production company? >> yes. >> what's the story behind this? >> rock comedy film.com is my inspiring entertainment brand. we want to inspire others to entertain and be inspiring ourselves. it's my web site. i don't know. >> you can take -- i was taking a look at your demo reel, you've done a lot of other stuff for some of those brands, really funny stuff. >> thank you. i'm also a musician and i do a little bit of comedy, too. so that's kind of where all my entertainment things go. >> what kind of music do you perform? do you sing or play guitar? >> wow. look at that. your branding is fantastic. i am seeing actual signed artists with worst cover art than that. that's amazing. >> thank you. >> do you sing? play a musical instrument? >> i started with piano and then i switched to guitar and i sing
9:10 am
>> really quickly, i know you want to try out for snl one day. >> i do. >> one of the prerequisites is having a ton of impressions you'll be able to do. do you have any? >> i do. you know owen wilson? >> of course. >> let me see if i can conjure him. we're here on the "morning blend." i'm so excited, man. wow, wow, wow. >> you have to break your nose and you have it. >> stewy, family guy. hey, ryan. >> you are all over the place. we're going to see a lot more of you. i'm sure. congratulations. >> thanks so much. >> snl is calling right now. >> sweet. >> there we go. >> if you want to keep up on his latest endeavors, you can go to rockcomedyfilm.com and call that number. up next on the blend. >> celebrity chef rick moonen is in the kitchen whipping up

9:15 am
i'll let michael speak on it more. but they take care of the families. they take care of the people that are afflicted by either brain disorders or memory loss and inability to be mobile. and a close friend of mine passed away not too long ago and i had not had anyone in my family that was directly affected. after i actually shot the show, i saw this movie called "still alice." that affected me emotionally so strongly that it deepened my support and understanding of like just how widespread and fast these things can really hurt your family and yourself. go ahead. >> michael, can you tell us about how excited you were to find out that you would be the recipient of this? >> i'd like to elaborate a little bit on what rick just said. it's almost like divine intervention that we have always
9:16 am
we, i mean keep memory alive and the cleveland clinic. lou ruvo was a local restauranteur who had a very successful business for many years, the venetian. his son, larry, built the brain institute downtown and we're fortunate enough to be affiliated with the clinic. the whole thing with alzheimer's hirples, because lou passed away with it 20 years ago, and through chefs starting with wolfgang puck, thomas keller and on and on, and rick moonen, have all been very supportive. brain health is at the top of the -- excuse the pun, food chain right now. there is so much interest generated right now. and the research and early detection that goes on at the
9:17 am
but is also internationally recognized. las vegas has really stepped up with brain health. as a matter of fact, on may 21, we'll be doing our 20th keep memory alive fund-raiser with tony bennett. >> oh, wow. >> his 90th birthday, may 21. >> it looks like a star studded event. >> it is. >> can you get tickets now? >> yes, you can. and you can also get some very interesting information on healthy brains.org, which is the six pillars of brain healths, which people want to know about. then go to the web site, keepmemoryalive.com and get information on tony bennett's show. >> i know we'll be seeing some of the things we have in front of you. >> you are. plus you'll have a cocktail that has been supported by southern lines and spirits and fair spirits as well. they both have donated toward this.

9:19 am
you go running around the kitchen, looking for everything with that color cooking and you don't know if you're going in the right direction until you question. it's a great cause. >> it is. >> thank you so much. show your support for rick at the recipe for deception happy hour and viewing party this thursday starting at 8:30 p.m. at rm seafood inside the shops at mandalay place. a portion of the tickets will benefit keep memory alive. rsvp to the e-mail on your screen. for more on keep memory alive, go to the web site listed. >> still to come on the "morning blend," get ready for the big city showdown as local high schools compete for basketball supremacy. >> are you on facebook or twitter?

>> you know, shawn, i think i was waiting for your invitation. so don't turn this back on me. >> it got lost in the mail. >> happy to be here. >> let's talk about this. you're going to bring peace to our lives. you can't but necessarily at our work and calmness down there. but the kitchen, you can help us with that. >> yep. the kitchen really is the heart of the home. we believe that at my magazine. but at the same time, it can be super chaotic. you've got more than just cooking and preparation in there. it's really the epicenter of the family. as a magazine editor, we'd love to come to shows like the international builder show right here in las vegas to look for new innovations and new products. i think what we found is that it's not about refrigerators and appliances that have like the internet or facebook or whatever in them. it's really about things to help you and your family find some calm, some convenience, but also to live a healthier life, too. one of the things that we saw on
9:23 am
me stop in my tracks was the bosh home appliances booth because i like simple solutions versus complicated, overthought solutions. and like when you have an oven door the old style, when you pull it down, it blocks you right at the stomach and you're like, i can't even get in. i can't put the 20-pound turkey inside. it's like who designed this? i stopped because i saw someone open a side oven door. when they opened it left or right, i was like oh, my gosh. you can literally put it inside and close it and that was to me, the school of thought, why didn't we just design it this >> of course. >> so that kind of got me to stop and i spent a lot of time at the bosh booth where i found most of the innovation at the show this year. >> i like that. that's really smart. these are the types of small differences that we can do in our kitchen that can make a big impact. >> they are. can i ask you a question? are you trying to live and eat healthier, too?
9:24 am
succeeding? no. but i'm trying. >> i think we're all trying and in steaming is something that's a really healthy way of avoiding excess oils and fats when cooking. i've been super disappointed with those little gadgets you buy from infomercials. they come out overcooked. if you give them to kids, it's like forget about it. although at the bosh booth, they had a steam convection oven. and if you open the door, the little compartment in there that you fill up with water. >> what? >> you put it back inside and what it does, you -- it's crazy, but it's like you're going to use it every day because you get professional results in the way you steam vegetables and proteins. so it retains the texture, the color, all the knew cents that you need and kids will love the way the food comes out. like we talked about i live healthyish just like you. ish is the key word. i put in some chocolate chip cookies just to see what happened. they came out so crisp and so
9:25 am
vegetables, if you are going to indulge, like you might love the best of the best. you can also bake cookies in there and wow. wow. they come out amazing. >> you're only going to be healthyish for a long time if they're going to be making chocolate chip cookies and they're that good, how are you going to stop? danny! >> have the best of the best when you indulge. our friends at bosh make it easy. >> fair enough. where would we go to learn more about this? i love the new designs. it's really cool. >> yeah. it's great stuff. i love like shopping. if you can't make it down to the show, you can go in the bosh web site. you can go to the magazine's web site. our print magazine is on news stands wherever magazines are sold. >> all right. thank you so much. it's cool to see anything in the kitchen change. been the same stuff for like decades. invite me next time. >> updates for your kitchen can lead to a more delicious chocolate chip cookie lifestyle.
9:26 am
the web site on your screen. dao? >> time for this week's what's for dinner brought to you by m and m soul food cafe. are you trying to decide what to eat tonight? if you love soul food, head to m and m soul food restaurant. today's special are award winning louisiana style gumbo. it's made with crabs, shrimp, chicken, okra and a special mix just from them. you'll be craved so much more. for this dessert -- for dessert, try one of their selections like sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, botha in a pudding or selection of cakes. wash your dinner down with some of their popular sweet tea or lemonade. it's an 11-time best of las vegas award winner. they have two locations, one on valley view and charleston and their new one on las vegas boulevard across center the stratosphere. they're also open for breakfast, so you can start with tasty mississippi home cooking. add some color to your fitness goals.

9:37 am
environment clean and sanitized, brad mckee. >> good to see you. >> let's talk about it. everyone wants to start the new year clean in one way or another, be it us or our home. how can you help us do that? >> we are the answer to this. as i was making like new year's resolutions this year, i was where do you start? i was like cleaning up my desk, so i could think clear. i was like, it starts with cleaning. and the way we do it is first off, like we're kind of in flu season. our environment gets dirty, soil gets in our carpet. we have pet stains and stuff. zerorez comes in, we use a patented system, powered water and we can clean without leaving any soapy residue behind and toxic chemicals. >> that's the difference between your company and someone else's? >> yeah. no one else has the technology we have. we're the only ones in nevada that has this technology. basically we take water. we pass it through an electrolysis and it changes the ph of the water. it's more alkaline like soaps and stuff. you can drink it.
9:38 am
it literally cuts through grease and grime better than soap. >> i've had people come up and say i see your "zero dark thirty" thing. does it really work? it's a special thing. it sounds like it's a gimmick, but you've seen the carpets. >> yeah. it really works. i just had a customer the other day say to me, like, does this really work? there is no way this really works. like it works. you just have to experience it. i read our reviews. we get all these that come in. over and over again, they say, i love after it's dry, it's not sticky and crunchy. if you want, like, the best feedback, coming from the customer, that's what they're saying. >> you're always reminding people that the carpet is the largest air filter in the home, because it traps everything. >> yeah. if you go change out your air filter, which is like a job that we all hate doing, how dusty and dirty and filthy that air filter gets, the same thing is going on with your carpet. the good thing is it's actually
9:39 am
breathing it, the carpet is filtering it out. you just have to keep it clean periodically. >> ben is waiting in the wings. he's going to connect -- we're going to clean this up. we have a filthy piece of carpet here that you pulled out of a trash bin somewhere. >> we've had this set out for a month in our shop. our crew have been walking all over it. we haven't vacuumed it. this is like worst case scenario. >> it's a really high traffic carpet in this case. you do this for a lot of businesses. >> absolutely. honestly, we just issue issue last night, he was in mesquite, i was running crews cleaning par pets last night. can you look at the difference? >> right away, too. it's ridiculous. >> this empowered water carries a slight electrical charge on it. so it's a natural sanitizer. >> you're not going to step on it and get electrocuted in. >> you're not going to get electrocuted. >> let's make that clear. >> but what that electrical

and bacteria and viruses in the carpet. so it's actually sanitized. >> i want to make sure that everyone knows out there. everyone that works for zerorez is background checked. >> oh, yeah. >> dao has not been. dao will not be showing up to your house. >> i like the vacuum. >> i'm telling you, our crew is the secret to our success. insured. we spend a lot of time training them 'cause we know when we go into your home or business, like this -- look at these pictures. >> a lot of these carpets, you're thinking that must have been a gray car set and you clean it, look at that! >> i'm telling you. people don't even realize, they are like, i didn't even think it would come this clean. i think you guys would clean it, but not this clean. >> you don't need to remove all your carpets and spend $3,000 when you can just get it cleaned for a fraction of the price. >> it's not just the carpets. i know you do tile and air ducts
9:41 am
you'll be breathing great. and you're getting people clean just in time before we hit spring cleaning. >> that's right. get in there now. a lot of people ask if this is a good time to do it? absolutely. a couple weeks ago, a bunch of our crew was getting the sniffles and stuff like that. so getting that environment clean kind of gets you back to zero. >> let's talk about the special offer. >> this is a great deal. twenty-nine dollars per room. on top of that you get 100 square feet of tile cleaned for free. there is minimums apply. like we just required you to get three rooms cleaned and 100 feet of tile. >> i remember when i moved into the house, all the grout and tile looked pretty. you spill one thing on it, it's done. >> you build up like this biofilm on top of everything. >> exactly. you guys are able to wipe through that. we showed the air duct pictures as well. all the dust that gets cleaned up. >> it's crazy.
9:42 am
like with health. this really affects your health. having a clean environment will help enhance your life dramatically. >> if somebody is buying a home or selling their home and they want to call you to clean it up, you can come in? >> absolutely. we do it all the time. we have landlords that call us up. new homeowners that just buy a new house. kind of -- you never want to live in someone else's dirt. no. so we can get you back to square one. >> a lot of the photos we saw, if the before picture is what i was buying, i'll be knocking 10,000 off the price. >> so it's great having you. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> all right. back to clean for 2016. call zerorez today. they'll get your house pretreated, cleaned and sanitized and get your carpets cleaned, $29 per room, plus they'll include free tile cleaning up to 100 square feet. restrictions. >> call the number or visit their web site to learn more about their services, offers and to take advantage of this deal.

about, i think, just because once you do, you can't look away and you can't not do something. for me in that moment, as a compassionate human being, what i could do in that moment was offer my abilities as an actor to bring this story to life. i was going to do anything i could to be part of it. >> let's face it, any movie that goes out there usually has an indifferent. but there is a message there. this message is really to bring awareness to people on how bad this problem is. if they go to the web site, if they can get a lot of information on it. there is different places to go to what you can do and things, tips of how you can trio make children around you, children in your own family safer. >> you're doing a great job by bringing this to the forefront with this promotion picture. before we go, i have to ask you, kevin, we're hearing rumors that zena reboot could be in place. how about hercules? we got to get you back on there. >> i heard that same rumor. hercules gave birth to zena.
