the airline promoted their senior vice president of planning to "chief operating officer." recently the airline's safety record has come under fire after several incidents and emergency landings. the company says they will use the leadership change-- "as an opportunity to refocus on operational needs and areas for improvement." in today's contact 13 consumer alert... 5 million more cars are being added to the list of vehicles recalled because of takata airbags. the move comes after a 10th death is linked to the japanese company's faulty airbags. the company released a statement offering condolences to the victim's family. takata has struggled for years since it was discovered its inflators were defective. the bags can explode when activated, firing out shards of metal and glass. mcdonald's is loving its new

some angry smokers from massachusetts will finally get their day in court. they want philip morris to pay for a monitoring program to detect early signs of cancer.... and they've filed a lawsuit to force the matter. that suit should finally go to trial this week... a decade after it was filed. the smokers are not seeking money. instead, they want the cigarette maker to pay for sophisticated chest scans for longtime smokers of marlboro cigarettes. legionnaires' disease is the latest health issue linked to drinking water in flint, michigan. the city's mclaren hospital says it found low levels of legionnaires bacteria in its water system. hospital administrators saw a spike in legionnaires cases after flint switched to a different water source two years ago. the switch was also linked to an increase in lead levels in

an emergency landing... the american airlines flight touched down in canada last night after it was bounced around mid-air. it was so bad, seven people were taken to the hospital. it hit like a big dip...some flight attendants were without seatbelts and then the other people..people passed out...it was scary the injured included three flight attendants and four passengers. the flight was heading from miami to milan, italy. a pre-dawn earthquake today sent people running into the streets and caused damage to buildings in spain's north african enclave of melilla. the us geological survey said the quake measured 6.3 on the richter scale and had its epicenter in the mediterranean sea. melilla is a small spanish city surrounded by morocco and the sea. there were no immediate reports of injuries, mainly because the quake took place before dawn

"oh my god...okay..." : oh boy, take a look! that's video taken during a powerful earthquake in alaska yesterday morning. u-s-g-s says the 6 point 8 quake hit just southwest of anchorage. nobody but was injured but nerves were definitely rattled. bad news for ammon bundy this midday... he and his armed militia were supposed to hold a meeting today with the community in oregon, but a judge canceled it due to safety concerns. the judge holding the meeting said law enforcement heard about plans to protest the meeting, and block the entrance to the senior center where it was going to be held. for three weeks now, bundy and his supporters have taken over a wildlife refuge there. oregon's governor says she wrote letters to the president, the attorney general, and the fbi... asking them to end the standoff. still ahead on action news at midday...

the early line varied. and now to the latest on the east coast blizzard --at least 30 weather- related deaths were reported across 12 states and the district of columbia. morning commuters were slowed by slick roads, damaged transit lines and endless mounds of snow. in the nation's capital the crews are working furiously to clear the streets... the concern now, less the snow and more that black ice as melted snow has frozen on the roadways. sheila wannen/cleaning up after the storm sot: the damage was bad. there was more debris than there was from sandy laying all removed and when i say removed that doesn't mean that doesn't mean we can just push it into the street. it has to be lifted and taken away.)) it was the biggest storm ever in baltimore--at 29.2 inches and in new york's central park, a new 24-hour record-- with 26.8 inches of snow grinding to a halt all forms of travel.. well almost all forms... and if you're wondering...the snow jackpot winner was

42 inches of snow. amazingly... there are not major delays at there were some canceled flights to the east coast, as you might expect. but things are getting back to normal... but you still might want to call ahead... especially if you're traveling to one of the hard hit cities. here's a story from the storm that will warm your heart. right in the middle of the massive storm freezing the east coast... a woman in pittsburgh' had her furnace go out... leaving her and her children freezing! normally she says she'd asked her husband to fix it.. but he's serving overseas right now. she called out a repair man, who was able to take care of it for her... and that's when he decided to do something extra special. sot: i couldn't say it because i would break up. it was a little emotional. so i wrote, night call deployment special. one dollar. "please just turn yourself in. don't let this drag on! (cries)" police are trying to figure out how the inmates were able to pull off this escape, and if

the former las vegas police officer accused of using excessive force while arresting a woman... and then lying about it.. is pleading not guilty to his federal charges... the entire incident was recorded on his body camera. richard scavone's trial is scheduled to begin on march 22nd. if convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison... and 500 thousand dollars in fines. the arrest happened last january... scavone was fired in september. we're now learning the identity of the man who was shot and killed while riding his bike early saturday morning... the coroner identified the victim as 23 year old arthur colwell from las vegas. metro says colwell was on his bike near owens and marion around 4 in the morning... when a black pickup truck pulled up next to him. that's when someone opened fire, hitting the man. then the truck sped away. police are still searching for that gunman. in illinois... community members gathered for a candle-light vigil for a

days earlier. the event was held at the intersection where 5-year-old austin ramos junior was shot friday while riding in a car with his father. police are looking for a maroon s-u-v that they say followed the car, pulled up beside it and opened fire. it's unknown how many shots were fired or if austin's father may have been the intended target. the charleston church where nine parishioners attending a bible study were shot and killed has a new pastor. local news outlets report the reverend dr. betty deas clark was appointed the first female pastor at historic emanuel ame church on saturday and delivered her first sermon, a message of hope, on sunday. she told parishioners if the congregation as a family believes in god, the church's best days are ahead. right now... detroit teachers are protesting outside a court where a judge is hearing arguments about why they should head back to class. the teachers' so-called sick-outs have repeatedly

schools during the past two weeks, keeping thousands of students at home. today's hearing is designed to stop the sick-outs. teachers are upset over pay, class sizes, and building conditions. in atlanta... a man is dead after the car he was driving crashed through the wall of a mall parking garage. according to the atlanta journal constitution, witnesses reported seeing the car speeding before hitting the wall last evening. the vehicle smashed through concrete and struck a hotel worker in a storage area of an adjacent hotel. the worker was not seriously hurt. atlanta police are investigating. a lot of people coming to the aid of people in flint, michigan... living with dangerous water. the goodwill even comes from....hockey rivals. this weekend, the flint firebirds got a special delivery from the windsor spitfires. the spitfires started collecting all of this bottled water ...on thursday. one of the families housing a spitfire athlete came up with e idea to collect water for flint. ((the original call was for bottled water like you see here to be donated at thursday night's game.

because people would totally be poppin your walls. basketball star shaquille o'neal went out of his way to play a game with some kids in florida... after one of their neighbors called the cops on them because the kids were playing too loudly in the street. shaq heard the story about a gainesville police officer who decided to shoot some hoops with the kids instead of reprimand them. dash-cam video of the short game went viral. officer bobby white went back to the neighborhood saturday with shaq, who surprised them with another game of basketball. this could have been a media frenzy. g-p-d said shaq specifically said he wanted to keep it quiet to surprise the kids and officer white.
