9:00 am
toughest month to say, february. taking live look outside. the world renowned chef is teaming up for a culinary tour where it's okay to dine-n-dash. we're going to give you the inside dish on that. >> it's the only time you can dine-n-dash and not get arrested. they will love you if you dine-n-dash. >> if you're a dine-n-dasher, can we talk about these people? >> really. >> the worst human beings alive. but this, if you go to this dine-n-dash, one of the best. >> the other dine-n-dash, did the police come? >> they ran really fast. >> so did he get caught? >> heard somebody yell and ran off. >> crappy. that's terrible. >> this dine-n-dash, okay. >> yeah, you'll want to stick around for that. going to be a lot of fun. it's happening at the sls, one of my favorite hotels. two pools outside, incredible. i've stayed overnight there before. and it is so beautiful, so clean, so modern. and the food there amaze. >> culinary wise, i put it up against any other property in town.
9:01 am
restaurants in that one place. >> yeah. the locals need to go out there and support them. >> no question. >> thank you so much for joining us today. >> i'm shawn tempesta. >> coming up today on the "morning blend," please don't stop the music. where to donate instruments to support local artists. >> plus, it's a skill that could literally save someone's life. learn hands only cpr that could be the difference between life and death. first up, our topic for the day, get your thunder, rain, your snow, i was looking out this morning, northern, like as far as like northern points of moon, they're getting a lot of snow. crazy. all hit the valley last night. action news had crews covering the storms. look at that. that's -- >> that's dusting of snow on somebody's patio. >> look at the palm tree. >> so weird. how cool. >> by the way, i love doing this in vegas. we barely get any snow. we want to know what your favorite type of weather and why?
9:02 am
do you prefer sunny skies 24/7? >> i love the snow only because we don't get t. i love the rain here because we typically don't get it. what's really sad is i asked greg this morningness i said, does this do anything for our drought? he said no. but it felt good that it came down, the plants got a little bit of water. we don't see so much this type of weather. and it's a nice change. but you are like it 75 degrees and with occasional sprinkles here and there. >> we need like a 40-day flood. >> we don't need the flooding all at once. >> we need some snow pack in denver and colorado would go into the river, that would be great. that said, i love snow if i don't have to shovel it and don't have to be anywhere. i wish it snowed throughout the valley today. it would be so nice. there was a storm back in 09, it was about seven inches of snow in parts of the valley? that will shut down this place for a week. >> yeah. i love it if you have a fireplace and it snows, you can cuddle up, read a book, be inside. same with the rain. you bake some cookies. it's just fun. >> i would do absolutely nothing
9:03 am
i would just stay in and do nothing until it all melted. i wouldn't see you until at least the 17th. it would be great. i don't know. i'm a fan, whenever it rains here, it's like it really rains in the valley. we get it so seldom that when it happens. >> there is so much debris on the ground from all the wind yesterday. >> too much. >> it's crazy. >> everywhere. >> be careful. dangerous out there. about this. weather? share your comments on our facebook and twitter pages. we can links and we can read some on the air. exercise plays a key role in keeping your heart healthy. >> producer micah has some more on giving your heart the love it deserves. micah? >> thanks. yes, this month is heart health month. so this morning we're focusing on the importance of getting the right amount of exercise in to keep you healthy. here with more is dr. gordon blackburn, with the cleveland clinic. he's the program director of cardiac rehabilitation.
9:04 am
>> good morning, micah. >> according to a recent heart health survey by the cleveland clinic, many americans are still not getting their recommended 2 1/2 hours of exercise per week. why is exercise so important for heart health? >> micah, we see exercise is fronts. developing heart disease for individuals who don't have heart disease. that can be by as much as 50%. for those who have heart disease, if we're looking at reducing the risk of mortality, regular exercise can cut that back by as much as 30 to 50% for individuals who have had bypass angioplasty or stent. >> would you say there is a lack of awareness when it comes to this and that's why you're not seeing those number even more so for exercise? >> i think people know that exercise is beneficial.
9:05 am
benefit they gain from doing regular exercise. and maybe how much is necessary to get that benefit. we probably see that on two fronts. one is that the individual thinks that the activity they get on their job, maybe they're walking on a daily basis, short intervals on the job, they think that's going to be adequate. other people feel that they have to put in a tremendous amount of exercise and they need to feel exhausted at the end of the workout to get the benefit. there is misperceptions on both sides. but it's a moderate intensity activity that the individual needs to engage in and that varies from person to person. we're looking at an average of 30 minutes per day, at least five days per week to getting a bare minimum of 150 minutes of exercise and to really optimize the benefits maybe a little bit more than that would help. i think the other thing is that individuals just have difficult times identifying where they're going to fit that activity in.
9:06 am
we feel time pressure throughout the day. i don't have an additional 30 minutes to put into the exercise. that's a matter of setting up a plan, figuring out where can i identify that half hour, or maybe multiple segments of time. short periods of ten minutes, three times a day would get you up to that 30 minutes. a lot of people can identify at least ten minutes a couple of times, three times a day that they could get the exercise in. >> i know you mentioned so many different schedules, including here in las vegas where it's a 24-hour city. as long as you can get like those steps, you plan it out ahead of time, it can be beneficial. >> right. that's a great point. you said 24 hour city. there is no one best time of day. there is president obama one best activity. it's what you like to do and it's when it fits into your lifestyle, your time frame. >> before we begin an exercise program, do we need a stress test? >> that's an interesting question.
9:07 am
need an exercise test or they can't start an exercise program. for the vast majority of individuals, that's not the case. but what we do recommend is that any individual check base with their family physician. certainly if they haven't been exercising for an extended time period, if they're having any symptoms that may be associated with heart disease or they have documented heart disease, they should be checking with their physician. some of those individuals may benefit from starting with an exercise test just to find out how they're doing, how much exercise they can do and how well the heart tolerates the exercise. >> lot of great information, doctor. is there a web site we can go to to learn more information about this? >> certainly. what we would recommend is going to clevelandclinic.org/loveyourheart or more information on exercise and other risk factors for heart disease. >> all right. time out us. >> thank you, micah. >> jump into action for american
9:08 am
to learn more, head to that web site right there on your screen. we'll also have these tips on our web site. dao and shawn, time to exercise. >> tomorrow. >> yeah. >> our friends at channel 13 action news invite you to download the all new action news app. >> it's fast, simple to use, and it has incredible weather radar. it will be there the next time a storm is brewing, kind of like today. you wish you had that app, i would have warned you. get the action news app free in play. still to come, chow down for charity. the culinary event that's also making sure no one goes hungry here in the valley. >> stay with us.

9:33 am
compressions alone. also i think it takes that fear that people have of touching strangers' mouth or loved ones or that weird uncle or whoever. >> you show up, you don't even do that, no mouth to mouth for you. >> no. we have tools that we use for that. >> no more mouth to mouth. we carry equipment. >> how does it happen hands only? steps. so basically you're going to assess the scene if you're the person coming up. you're going to check and see if they're breathing. this is the closest you're going to get to somebody's mouth. you're going to see if they're breathing. by yourself, you'll call 911 and get on the chest, palm of your hand in the center of their chest and you're going to do compressions. >> right where the sternum is? >> right here, about two inches deep. you're going to keep doing that until we arrive. we should be there within four to six minute.
9:34 am
so if i'm afraid and chicken, what should i be thinking because i don't want to break their chest? >> they're not going to feel you 'cause they're not breathing. >> so don't worry about it. >> yeah. >> they're passed out. >> so your goal is just to get their heart going. you want to put your happened on their chest and bring it down about two inches. you might feel the ribs break. and that's normal. it happens. >> wow. >> being able to save their lives and them waking up and live again, they'll be happier. >> the rib also heal. >> exactly. yeah. >> what if you go too high up or too far down? does it still help? >> it still helps. the main thing is basically just go right in the center of their chest with your palm. you want to be above them, so you can actually use your body weight to push down. keep your arms straight. 'cause otherwise if you're just using your arms, you're getting tired. >> is it more effective than
9:35 am
>> more effective. it's been proven that the chest compressions, you have hemoglobin that circulates. by us doing the chest compression, we keep that oxygenated blood circulating throughout their body. >> wow; what else should we be doing? >> that's it. >> keep doing it until you arrive? >> until you arrive. >> four to six minute social security how long it usually takes. >> so i've killed the person then. >> no. >> no. is there a song we should be playing in our head? i keep hearing "staying alive." is that a marketing gimmick? >> if you that to the beat, it's about 100 compressions per minute. that's your goal. it helps you stay in rhythm. if you want to think about something else to keep you in rhythm, if you follow that, you'll be perfect. >> do you need to raise the back of their head or anything? >> nothing. a flat surface. >> you're literally, assessing
9:36 am
enroute. you're listening to see if they're breathing. that's the closest you get to their mouth and then start the chest compression. >> you don't have to do this, wake up, wake up? >> no. >> i know there is places that residents can get training on this. >> that's correct. american red cross does hands only cpr training. we work with them. you can go to our web site. all the information is on there too. we'll also put the information sheet, those four easy steps will be on there as well. anybody can do it. kids, old, it doesn't matter. anybody can do it. it's just a matter of getting away from being scared and really just making a difference. >> it's become 100% less gross. >> exactly. for sure. >> you said you do this about four to six minutes? >> four to six minutes is our arrival time usually. >> oh, you're arrival time. >> oh, wow. >> it gives them a better chance of survival. we'll get there as soon as we can. >> not only the key is important
9:37 am
they'll leave the hospital neurologically intoxicate. they'll leave the hospital normal, able to do their normal routine, normal lives and stuff. >> if they do survive. without that, chances ares lower. >> thank you so much. >> thank you. >> save the one you're with. and learn hands only cpr with these skills. you can more than double a victim's chances of survival in the case of an emergency. if you want to learn more, check out the web site on your screen. >> on ktnv.com, you can find so many stories on what makes the valley a special place to live. >> go to the web site, click on the section tab, then find positively lv. you'll find special reports, deals at restaurants, it's
