9:01 am
what is it all about for people who are not familiar? >> it is a fund-raiser on february 28. >> second to last day of february. >> yeah. >> and it's oscar night. so everyone comes over to the palms, walks the red carpet and then we all hang out in the theater and on the big screen we watch the oscars. it's all to raise money for the variety children's charity of southern nevada. >> you've been working with this event for variety for many years now. how special is this? >> very special. this is our biggest fund-raiser of the year for variety. for those who aren't familiar with variety, variety is a charity here in las vegas. it's been around for like over 50 years, i think here in las vegas. they do a lot for children with special needs. we have three schools here in las vegas that variety founded. the miller school, the variety school. i visit it every year christmas time with a bunch of my friends
9:02 am
for christmas. for the christmas party. it's heart warming. the miller school, which this -- that's tony douglas from crazy girls. he's the comedy magic star, crazy girls. there he is performing for the kids. there is tommy lang. my good friend doing some clowning for the kids. there is the whole cast from this past year. we bring singers and magic acts and puppet acts and santa claus is the big star. but for instance, the miller school, all these kids are very severely challenged. they're all in wheelchairs. it's a great opportunity to perform for them and they get to other kid. >> this event that you are hosting there on the 28th raises money for what? >> we are trying to build
9:03 am
we're partnering with the city. they've given us land and it is a place where kids of all abilities can play together. lance mentioned the kids at miller school. these kids in wheelchair, they have no place to go play. yet there is equipment out there that create a playground where the kids that are blind, the kids that are autistic, those in wheelchairs, maybe they're enabled, but their care giver, their dad is in a wheelchair. that's what we're trying to create. we're raising money. >> we're looking at a rendering of it right now. it makes it fully a acceptable for kids in wheelchairs and those a are able-bodied and everywhere in between to play together. >> absolutely. >> that's expensive. and. >> most things are. >> you're looking at a quarter million dollars here in equipment. >> wow. >> because it's specialized equipment.
9:04 am
>> and so we're about a third of the way there. hopefully on the 28th of february, people come out to our party and brendan theater is at the palms. the tickets are $25. for $25, you get to watch the oscars on the big screen. we'll have a couple bars open up. and they're also going to get $20 worth of concessions at the brendan theater concession stack. >> it's like a $5 donation. >> that's right. >> then you get to meet lance and lance brings all of his friends. >> we'll have a lot of celebrities. in the past we've had matt king and fielding west there. we're gonna have the chippen dale's guys there. >> the fantasy girls will be there. it's a fun event. and i tell you what, those brendan theater hot dogs are delicious. go to the concession stand, get you a soft drink and popcorn and one of the hot dogs and you're
9:05 am
>> he has a grizzly here eating hot dogs. >> look at the food, that's incredible. now, lee, you can download the actual voting ballot? that's right? >> we accurate, it's the full oscar ballot. it has all 24 categories and it's in the order that the awards are shown. so it's real easy to use. download it at our web site varietysn.org. even if you don't come to our party, you can use it at home. >> you can match up and see if your film that you rooted for wins. >> exactly. >> yeah. do you play this game as well? you have leo winning? >> everybody tries to guess who is going to win. of course -- >> richie had to wait 20 years. >> i think that was an emmy. >> she had to wait a very long time, yeah. it's his turn. >> he'll be a bride maybe.
9:06 am
everybody together and be able to watch this. it is the big game, 'cause it really is as far as awards shows are concerned. this is like the biggest there is. >> and we've got chet buchanan and channel 13 emceeing and working the red carpet and announcing the celebrities as they come through. >> it's super cheap, the tickets. for 25 bucks. >> variety has no overhead. so the $25 for the ticket, that's $25 there. >> it's not $15 to administrative fee. >> no, the theater and concessions were donated. the elesysse, we have a vip suite, they donate everything. it's absolutely wonderful. else can say that? 100% of the money goes to the cause. >> that's phenomenal. great job as always. we look forward to getting that park built. >> thank you so much.

millions of households are going to be welcoming a new pet within the next year. however, only half of those pets will come from a shelter. you can help change that number at home and here with more is president and ceo of the humane society of the united states, that's wayne pacelle. he's the chairman of the board and joins us. we also have flip, who is in amy's arms right now. hey, how are you this morning?
9:10 am
>> the whole program is called the story and the dog. campaign, wayne. >> i think you framed it nicely. there are millions of people who are in the market for dog or cat in their homes and in their lives. but only a few million of those people are choosing adoption. if we can get rescue, then we can solve these -- in las vegas, the lead animal shelter has such enormous intake and historically had a pretty high euthanasia rate. we can solve these problems if enough people get involved. that's the point of the shelter pet project which is a collaborative campaign between made's >> with the shelter pet project, it's more of -- this is kind of the next step of it to try to get more homes for these shelter dogs and pets. >> yes.
9:11 am
advertising campaign and we're using celebrity pets who have millions of followers on instagram and youtube facebook and other social media platforms and we're asking people to tell their stories about adoption because we really want the idea of adoption is a wonderful thing to go viral. that's really part of what we're doing with the project. >> it's adorable. we're seeing some of that video right there. we had the keyboard cat, hamilton pug, and of course we had toast meets world, who i know has a big instagram following. >> this little guy, flip, flip is a six-week-old puppy who was actually found in an abandoned home with four of her brothers and sisters. unfortunately, two of them were frozen and didn't make it. but flip and his two siblings are here at saint hubert's in new jersey and they just

dogs and cats that could make fabulous family members. if you just come down to the shelter and think about adoption. >> for those who don't know, can you plain about maddie's fund. >> it's a family foundation, based in california. we're about 20 years old now. we support animal organizations such as the humane society of the united states, as well as saint hubert's and shelters across the country. big organizations and small whose goal is to end the killing of our shelter pets. we're proud to be here today. >> the statistics are saying millions are in shelters. but only half of them are getting homes. hopefully with this big campaign, we can increase that number. >> absolutely. you think about an animal like flip here who was really kind of on the knife's edge and could have died and now has been
9:13 am
going to have a wonderful life. i'm quite certain of it. and this is the case for so many animals. it has nothing to do with their qualities and attributes in terms of their fate. it's really on us. are we making the right choices? are we bringing them into our lives and saving them? we can do this. just three million more people choosing adoption should be an easy goal for us to achieve as a society. >>t's a great campaign that's been launched. so thank you so much for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> thanks so much. >> for more information about this project or to find a local shelter near you, just visit the shelter pet project.org. every thursday we have a pet up for adoption on our show. your pick of the litter. back to you. >> thank you so much, micah. the fourth annual catdance film festival in utah shines a spotlight on shelter cats this year as part of the mission. >> several film makers submitted
9:14 am
the golden litter scoop award. wouldn't you know it, the winning film maker was from right here in las vegas and you're seeing some of the film right now. mike thompson took home top honors at the catdance film festival and joins us with more on his film. how are you? >> thank you very much. >> can you tell us about your film and why you did what you did in this reel? >> well, sure. it stars gregory popovich who has a show here. >> he's known to work with an animal or two. >> yeah. >> he's definitely a cat whisperer. we did a feature film with him a year ago. so a friend of mine saw catdance, that it existed, sent us a link that said hey, you should have a catdance. you have a film. we said okay. but it turns out it's only for shorts. so we made this short film for catdance. >> a short is how long?
9:15 am
>> so this was a three minute one? >> it has to be under four minutes. >> so you wrote it, directed it? did all of it? >> i co- directed. my brother jerry. we have a team full of friends. >> so the name of the film is perfect catsy. i don't know. explain the premise of it. >> so yeah. popovich shows up in the street and he wants to have a nice hot dog and keeps vanishing. and he thinks it's the cat. hidden in the trash can. >> did you think you were going to win going into this? >> i mean, no. not at all. it's such a generous award. wow. we have to enter this. and so we did. this? this is so much money. >> where is that money -- home
9:16 am
>> we have a selection company called life word studios. we have a studio. we have a shelf with all our awards on it. >> i don't care what you ever win, if you win an oscar, that is your top award. that's fantastic. >> i love it. now. >> yeah. it was during sundance. >> did you meet a lot of cat lovers there? >> yes. >> did you know they existed this? party. just a cat themed super party. it was the greatest. option? >> we're still negotiating. >> are you doing dogs or rabbits next? >> you picked up 25 grand for this? >> yeah. it's incredible. very generous. i mean, i can't -- i have nothing but -- >> are you going to adopt a cat?
9:17 am
>> i have dogs. >> wow. >> my wife is allergic to cats. i love cats. >> now you really love cats. >> yeah. we had a cat for a minute. sneeze hound. film? >> so it is on freshstep.com/petdance2016. >> it's like 2013. you don't want to see that. you want the 2016. >> how many hours did it take to you do this? >> we shot the whole thing in one day during magic hour. just during that sunset when we kind of rushed through it. >> where in vegas did you film it? >> it's downtown on commerce. it's in the arts district area down there. >> it's really beautifully filmed. >> the cinematography looks cool. >> thank you very much. >> it's amazing this is your world. like it used to be you have to have a film camera. you don't even need the lights anymore. >> yeah of the it's a great time to be a film maker for sure.
9:18 am
>> you got your wife? >> she's from the hit show "new girl". she was the celebrity presenter. yeah. >> before we go, what's next for you. >> next, we are working on some more films. >> 25 grand can buy you some nice things. >> exactly. it's going to help us a lot. difficult us the freedom to write. >> that's cool. congratulations. >> thank you so much. >> appreciate it. >> 2016 catdance film festival honors the best original short films starring cats, of course. and to see the film from mike, head to the web site you see on your screen. congratulations again. don't use that scoop for what it's actually meant for. still to come on the blend, spend a romantic evening in jersey. the special valentine's day deal to see the hit show at paris. are you on facebook and twitter?

what exactly is laser hair therapy? >> laser hair therapy is where we use low level laser and we are playing this laser energy directly to the hair follicle. this stimulates the growth stage, so we're increasing circulation and blood flow back to the scalp and this is going to stimulate that growth stage for patients. >> that's how that works? >> yes. we're row growing your own natural hair, but in a noninvasive, no side effect, no pain way. >> how long does it take before someone might see hair follicles? >> so with this what we're looking for with this type of treatment is for somebody that still has active hair follicles. a lot of the time when there is no visible hair there in the area that we're looking at, there is still an active hair follicle. so what you do is you come into the clinic for an evaluation, takes about 30 minutes. we'll check your hair follicle activity with a pro scope magnifying camera that looks into the hair follicle. we'll be able to tell you yes or no, you're a good candidate for
9:21 am
you if you still have active hair follicles. if you do, we're able to regrow back that hair in that area where you still have the active hair follicles. >> just because you might not have hair, doesn't mean there is no hope. >> exactly. 'cause a lot of people take a look and they're like, i'm too far gone. or we get a lot of female patients. about 65% of our patient base is actually female patients which tend to lose their hair a little bit later on in life because they're producing more testosterone in their body. they'll take a look and they're wearing wigs or using extensions, which can be further damaging to the hair. and they're thinking that there is no hope for them when really, if you came into the clinic and we can take a look at you, we'll be able to determine yes, we can still help you. and maybe we won't be able to because not everybody still has active hair follicles. but like i said, you come into the clinic and we'll be able to tell you on the spot if you do. >> you'll let people know exactly. >> absolutely. >> how quickly can we see these results? >> the laser starts to take
9:22 am
weeks. typically our patients are seeing a positive cosmetic change in the first few months. however, the earlier on you catch the hair loss, the faster you will receive results with it. >> earlier you mentioned males and females. the majority are females. >> the majority of females are coming in now. we can treat either one, age is not a factor. so males tend to lose their hair earlier on in life, in their early 20s. middle age females tend to lose their hair later in life. it doesn't matter, we can treat you, as long as you have those active hair follicles. the really nice part about this program is we have the convenience factor. just because a lot of people can't make it into the clinic, if they are coming in for a clinic treatment program, they're coming once a week for 20-minute laser session. some people can't commit to that and we have portable devices now available, including the most
9:23 am
can use it at home. it's rechargeable. you wear it three times a week for 30 minutes. it's nice and convenient. you don't have to come into the clinic and you don't have to take time out of your busy lifestyle to actually regrow your hair back. >> basically you can get a treatment at home, just watching tv and letting that cap do the work for you? >> exactly. that's going to be our most popular device on the market today. >> do you feel anything? >> you don't. so depend, there is no side effects involved with this and it is pain free. so even though we say laser, it's a noninvasive laser. >> and you have "morning blend" special as well. what exactly is that? >> so we're going to offer you that important evaluation to tell you if you're going to be a good candidate absolutely free. so you can come in if you give us a call today, we'll do a free evaluation. we'll do a free consultation with you and we'll do that free first clinical laser session just so you can see what laser hair therapy is like. >> do you have people come in in
9:24 am
>> all ages come in because, unfortunately, it's not always a natural process. but when it's causing hair l it could be a medication that you were taking, could be stress that was causing it. so we see people of all ages in the clinic. >> again, you mentioned just because you don't have hair maybe on the surface. >> correct. >> and you perhaps are bald, doesn't mean you can not get help. >> it doesn't mean you can't get help or don't have active hair follicles. give us a call and we can do that evaluation for you to see if you'd be a good candidate for something like this. >> lindsey, thank you so much. great information. >> thank you for having me. >> laser med solutions offers a free consultation and evaluation. in addition to a free first clinical laser session for anyone who calls and books a consult. it's today only. for more on the latest technology to control hair loss and stimulate new growth, check out the web site on your screen or call the number listed. >> thank you so much. each week the panda guys, peters and associates, offers legal advice on our show. if you want to keep your home,

option. they add most people who qualify for short sale programs or even short sale and stay programs will also qualify for loan modification and possibly a loan reduction. let the attorneys at peters and associates find answers. to learn more about them, give them a call or visit the web site on your screen. you can find them on facebook and twitter. up next on the "morning blend," the jersey boys are in the house! stars of the hit musical spread the love with an amazing valentine's day show package. before we if to break, raising cane, they're showing love of their own. they're donating 20% of their sales to junior achievement of southern nevada. you have to download the fund-raiser flyer at junior achievement's web site, show it at the counter. go to the web site on your screen. you can also use a digital screen shot from your smart phone. the fund-raiser is today at all

we'll be back. praised as one of america's best mayors who governed as a pragmatist. a practical and successful legislator, bernie sanders passed more roll-call amendments in a republican congress than any other member, primary care access for millions of americans, protected social security, cracked the gridlock with john mccain to strengthen veterans' healthcare. bernie sanders -- a consistent, principled, and effective leader.
9:27 am
i'm bernie sanders, and i approve this message. >> welcome back. love is in the air at paris las vegas. head to jersey on the strip.
9:28 am
that your honey will love. >> two of the boys are here. graham fenton who played frankie valli and jason kappus. so great to see you. you're in one of the best shows on the strip. can you tell us about the show and the plot? >> so the show, jersey boys, is about frankie valli and the four seasons and it tells kind of the behind the scenes story of this group. first time the story has ever been told. they're four were you collar guys from the wrong side of the tracks in newark, new jersey, who manage to hit music gold and they're historical legends now. >> it's one of those shows -- first of all, the acting is phenomenal. congratulations. >> thank you. >> you don't realize how many hits that they had until you watch the show and you're like, wow. i didn't even realize how many hits they had. >> right. >> that's what we hear all the time. and especially from younger people, because this music has
9:29 am
if you didn't grow up with it, kids are like, i know that song. i didn't know who the four seasons were. >> you play bob. >> i do. >> tell us about bob. >> bob is the composer. he was the last and youngest one to join the group. they were kind of struggling around playing bars and bowling alleys. and bob came along and wrote "sherry" and" big girls don't cry" and all of a sudden, that was the last piece of the puzzle. everything clicked. and it was all history from there. >> pretty remarkable. what are some of the biggest compliments you get from fans maybe after the show? >> oh, man. people really tell us how we've taken them back to a great moment in their lives. >> it's like you're swept away to that time. >> really. and people jump in and buy into the story as soon as we start telling it. they really believe that we are these guys. sometimes they'll be singing "can't take my eyes off of you." yelling frankie.

>> they jump to their feet every night. it's really why i think the show has been so successful for so long here. the crowds keep coming back. we have people coming back to the show ten, 20 times. it's amazing. >> we're hearing the high end there. ow. >> i heard you doing a little bit before you cut to commercial. >> i don't know how on a daily thing. this makes for a great date night. perfect segway. >> this is awesome valentine's day special going on the ground upon jersey boys. >> partnering up with the eiffel tower, paris. and you can get a valentine's day deal for tickets and dinner and it's like less than 200 bucks. some people might pay just that much just for dinner. >> yes, so i hear. >> so it's a great deal. >> what nights are you performing?
9:31 am
7:00 p.m. every night. we're at paris las vegas. this deal really is great. you just go to jersey boysvegas.com. >> here is the deal, i reserved over at eiffel tower and it's about that much per person just for the restaurant. >> yeah. >> so it's like you're getting the show for free. >> what a better day to spend your valentine's day, have a nice date night. the restaurant is fantastic. >> the view, for justice. >> amazing view of the bellagio fountains there. then you get to come down and see a hit show. >> and the local special is buy one, get one? >> yeah. we have that with a nevada i.d you can get that and it's buy one, get one. >> use the code bogo. >> it's fun to say. >> of course. >> there has been a lot of success with the show. still seeing huge crowds. >> yeah.

well, dietitian and nutrition expert anessa chumbley. good morning to you. >> good morning. thanks so much for having me. >> our pleasure. it's so easy to go to the grocery store and grab all the junk food. but we can't be doing that if we want to stay healthy. >> yeah. the grocery, i think, is where health starts for a lot of us. what we put in that cart literally will determine our health and how we'll feel for the weeks to come. >> how do we shop better? do we have to have a list? what do you suggest? >> you know what? so i have three great grocery shopping points and you nailed one of them. it's go with a list. and it's something so small, but it's important to remember because prepping gives us future power. it helps you out in the moment. it takes the work out of it and healthy eating is a lot about preparation. so secondly, organics and natural products are going to be a great source for healthy
9:36 am
your local albertson's if vaughn's have healthy choices. it can be overwhelm to go change to organic at once. i recommend taking one product, swapping it out for the organic version and you've increased the health factor instantly. but then you've also sealed it as a habit. once you've done that, it's got good power behind it. and then third, start to see the produce section of your local store as nature's pharmacy. so those are going to be the places that you find the ingredients that are really going to energize and heal and might even prevent disease. >> why is organic better for you >> that's a great question. organic has so much value. a lot of it is around what it's free from. it's going to be free from pesticides, fertilizers, gmo's, synthetic ingredients. and if it's a meat or poultry, eggs or dairy, it will be free from hormones and antibiotics and also all are made with sustainable practices. so again, it's a good way to even make one change and then
9:37 am
organic lifestyle. >> when it comes to produce, is it okay whether it's in the bag or fresh on the rack there at the grocery store? does it matter? >> you know, when it comes to to fresh, frozen is best. so you're right there. i like to say when you're in the produce section shopping for organics, always think in season. that's because those are going to be the items that are the least expensive and then also at their peak nutritionally. so they're going to taste the best and be the ripest. so flavor and nutrition should go together. it's kind of a myth that they should be separated. they should be together. >> should we anticipate paying more or is it sort of the same price wise? >> you know what? if you stick with the store brands, it will be lower than the other organic items. two of my favorites available exclusively at vonn's and albertson are old organic. >> you have great things in front of you. what did you make this morning?
9:38 am
so i have breakfast for us. this recipe that i want to share is one of my favorites. it's called apple oat waffles. i love it 'cause it's just five ingredients. and it's all based around whole rolled oates and there is no other grain or flour and then it's sweetened with an apple. don't even peel it, just remove the core. that way you have all that good fiber in there that's going to keep you full 'til lunch. then it's almond milk, and egg and cinnamon. super simple. the batter is made in the plentier. you have the hearty waffles. we top them with coconut whip cream or berries. for my kids, i make up a batch and put them in the freezer. we have instant breakfast on hand. then spread them with organic peanut butter. every kid loves peanut butter, almond butternd top it with coconut. it's such a thing. it's one of miff favorite foods. lots of things you could top with this. it's like a good power snack. >> looks so good and it's great for you. you made us hungry. so now i'm going to make one. thank you so much. >> you're welcome.
9:39 am

property from a homeowner who had a family member pass away, or it's a rental property that just is unwanted. >> sometimes you'll inherit that type of home that hasn't been updated in 50 years, what am i going to do? it's going to cost a lot of money to fix and put back on the market. we could give that to you if you give us cash for that home and you do what with it? >> well, typically what i do is up with of two things. i will fix the home up and keep it in my long-term rental portfolio or fix it up, put it back on the market for resale to a home buyer. it's really a win-win situation for everyone. i like to work with these home sellers because i get to help them out of a bad situation. >> these are for people that -- it's not necessarily your typical home sale, but in the sense of you want to either get out of it fast or it's just way beyond your reach to be able to fix it. they give it to you and you do your magic. >> that's right. >> does the seller pay a real estate commission? >> on the homes i buy, there is

i also pay ordinary seller closing costs at close of escrow. >> no kidding. >> this is an as is transaction. so we're helping sellers who may not have the funds to obviously repair these properties. so there is no fix-ups. there is no repairs to be done. as is. i'll come in and purchase the home and help the homeowner make an easy transition out of the property. >> you're the one getting your hands dirty. >> that's right. how fast can this happen? let's say we have a property. we just want to get it off our hands. how soon can we get it done? >> i purchase homes as quickly as three days before with cash. >> no kidding. wow. and have the cash thing and not have to wait for escrow and all those things that can tie up something of a sale of this magnitude. if you try get a mortgage, they'll say you have to fix this, this and this before we put our name to it. >> that's right. most buyers are unwilling or unable to purchase homes like this due to the strict lender
9:43 am
so it's necessary to sell to a cash buyer like myself because we're the only ones who can afford to buy those and do the repairs. when a normal home buyer, they can't get the loan on there and they can't afford possibly those fix-up costs. >> let's say we're in this situation right now. we're wondering whether or not our home is worthy or unworthy enough for you to take off our hands. how do we find out? >> it's really simple. i have a three-step process. give my office a call for a 24 hour no obligation cash offer. then what we'll do is take a look at the property, evaluate it. step two is we come to an agreeable purchase price. we sign a purchase agreement. step three, we go to title and closing. third party title company. and you'll get your cash profits at close of escrow. we want to make it as smooth a transition for that homeowner as possible. 'cause a lot of homeowners are in a situation where they're not able to -- they're in a rush. they don't have time. they just need to be out of the property very quickly.
