boy, a dramatic rescue caught on camera yesterday in port st. lucie, florida. at least two bystanders and two police detectives pulled a 73-year-old man out of his car after it crashed in a pond this front of city hall. he had been hit by another elderly driver, a 77-year-old woman, which sent his car careening right into that pond. luckily no one was hurt. the same can't be said for that car. there will be more testimony

at a hearing to decide if a convicted murderer should get a new trial. the case of adnan syed was the subject of the first season of the popular "serial" podcast who was convicted in the 1999 murder of his former girlfriend. but the podcast raised questions about the case. on the stand yesterday, a witness claimed she saw him at a library during the time prosecutors claimed he was committing the crime. she also said a former prosecutor said the potential alibi was irrelevant. and real estate heir robert durst has pleaded guilty to a weapons charge in new orleans. he's been in custody since last year just as an hbo documentary series was airing that detailed his links to several murders. in yesterday's deal, durst agreed to an 85-month prison sentence. if a judge approves the deal, it could clear the way for durst's extradition to california to face charges for the murder of a former friend. the 13-year-old girl from virginia whose body was found in a pond across the border in north carolina will be buried

>> authorities are learning it was social media that linked her to one of the killers. abc's eva pilgrim has the latest. >> reporter: as the family prepares to lay their 13-year-old daughter to rest, authorities still trying to piece together the case. family and friends telling abc news, seventh grader nicole lovell was bullied at school, self-conscious about the way she looked after beating serious childhood illnesses. she had multiple social media accounts -- facebook, instagram, snapchat, kik. it was there police think she met david eisenhauer, the 18-year-old freshman, a former high school track star, charged in her murder. >> eisenhauer used this relationship to his advantage to abduct and then kill her. >> reporter: nicole lovell's parents say they last saw her last tuesday night. she snuck out, pushing a dresser against her bedroom door, climbing out her window. saturday morning, police arrest david eisenhauer in his dorm at virginia tech. that afternoon, authorities find lovell's body 80 miles away in north carolina. the alleged accomplice expected

clinton and sanders is looking downright polite compared to the sparks igniting among republicans. donald trump accusing senator ted cruz of fraud for stealing the iowa caucus after team cruz spread word on caucus day that dr. ben carson might be dropping out. votes. cruz apologized to carson but stood by his campaign tactics and launched his own attack on trump. >> i don't know anyone who would be comfortable with someone who behaves this way, having his finger on the button. we're liable to wake up one morning and donald, if he were president, would have nuked denmark. >> trump, however, not letting the matter drop. he's calling for an investigation into cruz's actions up to and perhaps including a do-over of the iowa caucus all together. the republican presidential field is continuing to thin out. former pennsylvania senator rick santorum has dropped out of the race. announcing he's now endorsing third place candidate marco rubio.

in iowa on monday, and after finishing in fifth place in iowa, with 4.5% of the vote, kentucky senator rand paul has also dropped out of the race. the syrian peace talks are on hold with each side claiming that the other side doesn't want an end to the fighting. one thing is clear, five years of civil war has taken its toll on the country as video taken by a drone in homs shows right here. block after block of the city completely in ruins. once the third largest city in syria, homs has seen fierce fighting between the russian-backed governmnmt forces and the rebels. this drone video was taken by a group with ties to the kremlin. all too often mideastern refugees drown while trying to cross the mediterranean into europe. so, this rescue, 11 people off the coast of greece. this is especially uplifting they were saved bit italian coast guard. last year more than 3700 migrants died while crossing the sea. they came from kurdish iraq,

just devastated by the violence. now to that frightening explosion on board a jetliner over somalia. the pilot says a bomb blew the hole in the aircraft but officials have not confirmed that was the cause. the body of a man who might have been blown out of the jet was found on the ground not far away. if it was a bomb, no group has claimed responsibility. back here in this country, a powerful winter storm is producing tornadoes in the southeast. at least two more were reported last night even as residents were cleaning up from six the day before. the tornadoes aren't the only weather problem in the south. here's more from steve osunsami. >> reporter: in crocket county, tennessee, this surveillance camera at the high school shows the moment a tornado came crushing through classrooms. there's no power, and school is closed. >> everybody was gone home. >> reporter: and that saved lives. >> yes, no doubt. >> reporter: from tennessee to mississippi -- >> better get somewhere. here it comes. >> reporter: -- the twisters

>> go, go, go! >> reporter: the weather service is now saying that this one in western alabama was an ef-2. 23 homes were destroyed. >> i was grateful to god he brought us through it. >> reporter: the storm was supposed to be weaker, but try telling that to drivers in the rain, who had to be rescued from rising waters outside nashville and atlanta. >> the will to live kept her hanging on. >> reporter: there were even tornadoes near columbia, south carolina, and this near savannah. in the midwest, they're still digging out, finally reopening interstate 80 in nebraska. more than 200 miles were closed. this is what's left of the football coach's office here at the tornado ripped this roof clear off and pulled out this air conditioner from this spot over here. the national weather service now says the tornado that hit this area was an ef-1 that traveled nearly three miles. steve osunsami, abc news, alamo, tennessee. not all avalanches are natural disasters.

dozens of american boats are heading from havana, cuba, to key west right now. they sailed out of cuba yesterday in what was called the largest american regatta since the u.s. and cuba restored relations. the 63 boats brought almost 500 americans to cuba, most for the first time ever. they are expected in key west on saturday. some ominous new developments in the spread of the zika virus here in the u.s.

they're declaring health emergencies in four counties. >> the red cross is also sending out a new warning this morning. abc's dr. richard besser has more from brazil. >> reporter: the zika epidemic continues to spread. florida now the first state that has the risky mosquito to declare a health emergency because of nine cases in four counties. just 24 hours after an alert about a new danger posed by travelers returning to the u.s. from infected areas. the latest case of zika in dallas was transmitted sexually, after a person infected with the virus traveled from venezuela to texas and passed the virus onto their partner. the risk from zika still primarily for pregnant women. at potential risk for babies eformities. but now doctors seeing a rare, but alarming neurological complication in the general population. that may be linked to zika. guillain-barre syndrome, a type of progressive paralysis. in brazil, the rio olympic committee reassuring athletes
