blend rolls on. want to get out of debt without filing for bankruptcy? our next guest can help you renegotiate your contract to help you lower the amount you owe. it's called debt settlement. >> here to explain or the guys from peters and associates, judah zalalik, and xenophon peters. how are you? >> welcome. >> we briefed it at the top. explain what debt settlement is. >> it's just a means to get out of debt so there's bankruptcy, there's debt consolidation, there's debt sell heelment. we negotiate with your creditors to pay pennys on the door. you pay about 20% to 40% of what you owe, saving about 60% to 80% of the debt. >> this is good for people who have a lot of debt that they can't manage? >> it's really good for anyone. if you don't want to file bankruptcy or don't qualify for chapter 7 bankruptcy, which may be better, we can do debt sellelment. it's another option to get out
9:07 am
you come into us we're not going to push you into bankruptcy. there are other things you can do, too. >> there is debt settlement and you hear about debt consolidation. i did that when i was 19, it was not what i thought it was. explain the difference. >> debt consolidation is where you possibly will get a loan to pay off all your debt and you have one monthly payment instead of paying five, ten credit cards each. you end up paying the full amount of the debt plus paying interest. where as with debt sellelment you pay 20% to 40% of what euroing, so you save. >> you actually probably benefit more. >> a lot more. >> my credit score tanked about 150 points. did not necessarily work for me. because it ends up closing all the accounts which is not great. >> it can all affect your credit negatively, but the question is do you save money in it. and with debt consolidation you're not going to save any money, with debt consolidation you'll save at least half.
9:08 am
>> people can do it on their own. the question is are you going to get a better result if you do it on your own, like anything in the law. you don't need a lawyer to do it. the question is are you come out better if you have a lawyer. >> you do this all the time. >> all the time. >> i'm sure you can negotiate better than someone who doesn't know what they're doing. >> we're also a bankruptcy firm, so we're able to threaten bankruptcy and creditors listen to that because they would rather take something as opposed to nothing. >> debt sell it. is it better than bankruptcy as far as credit is concerned? >> typically it's better. debt settlement the debt will be there for less amount of time. >> it's going to show up as settled for less than the full amount. if we do bankruptcy we're going do show you how to get your credit score back up to 700 within two years. >> it's working in good faith with the creditors, which is why that will show up better on your credit report as opposed to a bunch of last payment. >> right. >> do you find a lot of people
9:09 am
younger and paying for these things as they get older and it takes so long to pay this off? >> younger or older we see all sorts of people come in with all sorts of problems. sometimes it's medical debt, sometimes it's divorce, sometimes it's someone dying in your family whatever the reason is, however you got in debt we can help you get out of it. sometimes it's being young and naive. >> charging up the credit cards. a lot of people do that. >> i think some people think the bank is going to sue, there's no way they'll settle. why do they end upset link more than off than suing? >> they would rather take something as opposed to nothing. >> lawsuits can cost a lot. >> they don't want to sue you. that costs money in terms of hiring an attorney. if you're able to pay them a little bit of money usually the creditors are happy. >> they don't know what they're going to get. even if you get sued we can still settle that debt.
9:10 am
isn't the end of it. there are still options. >> if you get a threatening letter from your credit card or bank, seek help, do something, don't ignore it. >> don't ignore it. >> that can cost you a lot in the end. >> the debt is only going to increase with interest, with costs, putting the lawyers fees on there. it gets big sometimes. seek help. >> what kind of debt are we settling? all mine was consumer credit when i was an idiot 19-year-old with my playstation. is it just consumer credit? what are we talking? >> mostly consumer credit. paydays, medical bills. >> oh, man those are out of control. >> it's very difficult to settle those but they are willing to take a little bit less because of the bankruptcy threat. >> the pay payday companies they want you to pay it back within two, three weeks. we shall stretch that over a year, and they're happy because they'll get some money back. >> at what point would you want to file for bankruptcy? >> usually when you just can't
9:11 am
people have a lot of debt, 30, 40, $50,000 in debt, when you multiply 20% times a lot of money it's still a lot of money. it's usually better for them to file bankruptcy if they're not making a certain amount of money and don't have the money to settle. >> there are cases where there's a catastrophic event like getting sick and having to pay all the medical bills, that could cause you to -- is that the biggest reason for bankruptcy? >> you see a lot of medical bankruptcies. people with a couple hundred thousand in medical debt, but credit card debt mostly and paydays. >> if you want to do debt sell sell settlement how long on does it take? >> we don't want to go any longer than a year and a half. if it's going to take longer than that we might counsel them to consider bankruptcy. if you take tooing long you start to get sued. and we can still settle that lawsuit that range goes up to maybe 70%. >> is settlement directly connected to how much money you
9:12 am
do you have to prove insolvency to get that settlement? can you be making solid money and say i want to settle it and get out of my life? >> depends on the creditors. most creditors don't. so a lot of our clients are people who can afford their bills sometimes, but they would just rather pay pennies on the dooren a be able to afford their mortgage. >> most of the time they're not going to dig too deep. >> great having you. thank you so much. don't let your debt get out of control. let the attorneys at peters and associates file a settlement to lower what you owe. give them a call or visit the website. are you on facebook or twitter? like or follow us. >> after you like them, like us. vegasmorningblend.com, links are on the website.
