"nicky". earlier today... metro posted this picture.... asking for raafter n is doing well tonight. but they say... there's no telling when nicky will be able to return to work. 13 action news reporter... michael burton spoke with a former metro officer who says... this is no small issue! that's right tricia - the nation has seen several police officers shot or injured in the line of duty - but you don't hear much about k-9's. well - they too are considered officers so the metro police department is incredibly relieved to know they won't have to bury one of their own. the twelve hour stand-off ended in a bloody mess - the suspect taken down after the responding nicky - wa multiple times near the head. "they are trained to take the suspect down to the ground and

say the suspett ten multiple times. "the way the dog bites is if there is an aggressive movement. the dog just grabs ahold of him - the dog won't just chomp on him." retired metro officer randy sutton says most suspects surrender at the sight of a charging k-9.dog. it's a huge deterant and most people will surrender." nicky's handler spent the afternoon with the dog at the hospital where he underwent surgery all afternoon. sutton says k-9's and their handlers form a human bond. "they're partners. they count on eachother literally for their very lives." sutton says there's no telling how long nicky will be off the streets - but finding a substitute won't be cheap. "they're a huge financial investment in these animals - no only just the cost to buy them, these dogs are trained and they're individuals." nicky's injuries may even keep
