accidents. abc's mary bruce has the very latest. >> reporter: overnight, slick, sleety roads leading to wreck after wreck. >> there's a lot of icy spots. >> reporter: early this morning, this massive pileup in pennsylvania, just north o scranton on i-81, semitrucks plowing into each other after hitting black ice, crushing cars in their path. rescue crews are on the scene. there were reports of multiple injuries. the ice-covered interstate remains closed. many cars unable to get traction. over 2,000 wrecks in 24 hours across 17 states. virginia alone seeing more than 500. it wasn't just miserable road conditions. tornadoes touching down in the south. on the florida/alabama border, a tornado damaging homes and dropping trees on cars. in louisiana, a reported tornado ripping the roof off this carwash and tossing it into this pizza hut. cell phone video capturing the panicked patrons moments after. >> you're all right, mom.

were only minor injuries. this morning, in mississippi, they're cleaning up after a tornado may have touched down there. three homes flattened and completely destroyed. here at the charlotte airport, it is a wet, slick mess. already 25 flights canceled here. nearly 400 across the country and growing. amy? >> all right, mary. thanks for the very latest on that. and that snow and ice is not sticking around long. rob, the temperatures have been jumping up and down the past few a 50-degree swing for millions. >> yeah, amy, in some cases, a 60-degree swing. we're in the upper 40s here in manhattan. where just a few days ago, record temperatures well below zero. look at ththis swing. when you talk about sunday, minus 1 in new york. today, well into the 50s. but before that -- it will be windy, too, by the way. before that happens, we still have pockets of really cold air. so, it's a slick commute just outside of d.c., they just

last night, the bushes were not the only ones to square off with donald trump. vice president dick cheney also said, when listening to donald trump, it sounds like a liberal democrat when he attacks the bush administration over 9/11. >> mr. trump joins us now. a republican candidate in a pitch battle with the party's previous president and vice president. >> well, george, this wasn't started by me. this was started by jeb bush. he was telling me all sorts of good things in a debate and various other places. finally, i said, hey, look. he was saying how safe things were. well, i said, excuse me, the world trade center came down during your brother's administration. you can't bring out the brother. i have never met the brother. you can't bring out the brother, say what a wonderful job he did. it's like a baseball game. they got 20 runs in the first

surveillance cameras from the plaza hotel and the hospital as all part of their investigation. >> use nonlethal force whenever possible. >> reporter: this morning, former new york governor eliot spitzer under scrutiny after new york city's famed plaza hotel saturday night. spitzer and a 25-year-old woman, new york papers identifying her as this woman -- svetlana travis, allegedly getting into an argument. travis calling 911, telling police at one point the former governor choked her, later recanting that statement. >> be advised, the edp is in room 1541 if the plaza hotel. she's having a nervous breakdown. >> reporter: police telling abc news that the two had been in some sort of a romantic relationship for about two years. spitzer's lawyer speaking out overnight, saying there was no criminal activity on the part of mr. spitzer.
