the small plane had a student pilot at the controls. police heard cries from the water and grabbed kayaks that were tied up nearby. their only light, from a helicopter above. well, we turn now to the tense standoff between apple and the fbi over accessing the contents of the iphone of the san bernardino shooters. >> okay. so, researchers say it is possible to hack into that phone without apple's help. and now one of america's foremost experts on cybersecurity is stepping up to the plate. here's abc's eva pilgrim. >> reporter: a proposal to break the stalemate between the fbi and apple over the government's demand the tech giant hack into the iphone of the san bernardino shooter. cybersecurity pioneer john mcafee offering to do it himself for free in three weeks. >> i guarantee, you give me the phone, i'll give you the data. >> reporter: mcafee defending apple saying the fbi's request to create a so-called backdoor

system puts hundreds of millions of iphone users at risk. his plan involves physically taking apart this phone and only this phone eliminating any risk to others. >> using social engineering plus the hardware and the software, we would perform our magic with the wands and it comes out. this is how it works. there are 10,000 hackers in the world who could easily do what i'm suggesting myself. >> reporter: but the government has said it needs apple's help to get into syed farook's phone. no word if the fbi is considering his offer, but mcafee is so confident in his ability to crack that phone, that he told me very colorfully, if he fails, he will eat his shoe on live tv. eva pilgrim, abc news, new york. >> well, that's a throwdown, huh? >> i guess. researchers say hacking into the iphone is at least technically possible. so we'll see how this all plays out. maybe it will not make it to the supreme court but it sure is heading that way it seems. >> oh, boy, yeah.

and the bitterness ends i stayed up with you all night had i known how to save a life a high school wrestling team from utah was in provo for a state tournament last week when two of its members were put to a test. neither one of them could have possibly expected this. >> their quick moves off the mat helped save the life of a man from idaho. hailey higgins from our salt lake city station has the story. >> we were there for a reason and we did what we could. >> reporter: best friends devin english and allan madsen with five teammates and their coach when a woman screamed for help near their hotel room. the students quickly jumped into action. >> the first thing that popped into my mind was this woman was being attacked, and it kind of scared me who i was going to come up against or what kind of scene i was going to come to and what i would do about it. but what i came to was a lot worse.

preston, idaho, was having a medical emergency after undergoing back surgery. his wife kathy was panicking by his side. >> his head was tilted back and he was out of it. you could tell something was wrong. so, i'm sitting there, so i went straight for his neck, started feeling for a pulse. nothing. >> reporter: alongside their coach, english and madsen picked up his lifeless body from the chair and started cpr. they kept him alive until medical crews came. after our interview, kathy called and spoke to the boys for the first time. >> i would just say to them that they mean the world to me. i don't know them personally. i don't even know all their names, but we love them dearly. >> reporter: kathy is convinced her husband wouldn't be alive without their help. she calls them heroes. the boys disagree. >> it's the right thing to do. you shouldn't think twice about something like that. you act upon it. you need to do it. >> reporter: and while they didn't bring home the trophy from the state tournament, the athletes tell me they did
