9:11 am
>> it's as a director -- it's -- it's sort of a dreamy experience. you're going to set every day. those are a few, you know. the list goes on and on. it was a great ensemble, and every day you get to set you have sort of some sort of different group of actors you're working with to tell this story. and you know, for material that could be pretty dark and heady at times, it was a real joy on the set, a real excitement about the work we were doing. and that's something that i think actually translates to the screen. i think it's something you can feel. >> i've seen "spotlight" and you get that feeling they just mesh so well together for this movie to bring to light, like you mentioned, something we've seen splashed across the headlines before. >> right. yeah. and i think really what we're honoring here is the great work of the journalists in some way. and i think that's something people have really been responding to, to celebration of craft, the celebration of the procedure and the kind of

plays out, and it makes this kind of, you know, subject matter, it makes it in some ways more accessible to audiences. they were able to sort of discover this story as the journalists were discovering it. and it's a pretty compelling tale. >> and if someone has not checked it out just yet can you give us a synopsis of what to expect from it? >> yeah. it really starts day one, marty, arrived at the boston globe. he arrived from miami. day one he started asking questions about what the catholic church did and did not know about a particular case of priest. and he sort of launched this investigation, he put the spotlight team on it, a four person investigative unit on this investigation. story. it was in 2001, 2002, and this investigation unleashed the story that is still happening an impact today, still playing out
9:13 am
it's really gripping narrative of the work that these journalists did in the very tight city of boston. and taking on the catholic church. arguably the most iconic institution in boston at that time. >> and that team actually won the pull iter. price for this investigation itself, and the movie has won a couple awards, because the critics love it. >> right. right. i mean, look, i think we certainly stand on the shoulders of the great work at the boston globe, and we're forever indebted to them, not only writing the story but allowing us to retail it and share it with the world. but ultimately what has happened is it's given a story a whole new platform and reach. and i think everyone in all sides of the issue is excited about that, that we're having these discussions that we're talking about this. >> best of luck to you on this oscar sunday.

we'll be back. has your hair fallen victim to heat or styling damage? reverse that damage and get it healthy again. here with simple steps emily loftiss. emily is known as the queen of every day glam. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> is it really possible to stop and reverse the signs of hair damage without having to cut your hair off? >> oh, yes. we don't all look cute with a picksy. we got to keep the hair that we have and restore it. >> let's talk about simple ways we can do that. what do you recommend? >> so i have a product that i'm absolutely obsessed with. it is the anti-aging hair treatment system. it's a three part treatment, which will replace your shampoo and conditioner. so the first step is a detoxing clarifier, which will strip all
9:29 am
hair, which is the heavy silicones from your shampoo and conditioners, will strip those out. next we're going to replace your conditioner, reconstructing mask. this is the fun part where come you're in the shower, you have your own spa moment where you hair. this is when the storing happens. we're going to restore the moisture and control all the 40siness in your hair. last but not least the third part of our system is the rejuvenating elixor. it's a leave in treatment. it's very manageable, beautiful and luscious. the perfect hair that you've always dreamed of. >> is this something we do once a week? once a month? how often? >> this replaces your shampoo and conditioner. get rid of those in your show he. every time you wash your hair you'll use these three products instead. i recommend wash your hair with cold water. and also to wash your hair every other day.
9:30 am
now, what about taking vita minutes? do they help? >> oh, they really do. every person lacks defensecy in vitamin b 12, so you can ingest it with a vitamin. my system has b 12 for your hair. along with b 12 it has peptide and proteins, all that goodness in your hair just to make your hair strong, prevent greys, and make it luscious and beautiful. >> now, emily what about tying your hair back? does that actually damage your hair? >> it really does damage your hair. they have new rubber bands that are just plain elastic, that doesn't have that metal part. and i suggest using that. and when you sleep at night, put your hair up in a top knot, don't use a rusher band, but it leaves your hair where you're not laying on it and making it flat. when you bring it down it comes out beautiful. >> and does blow drying actually
9:31 am
>> oh, yeah, you should have seen my hair team right before this. you use the hair drier and it really lifts from the root and brings the hair up. and i love to use develop row rollers. it doesn't use heat and still gives you the volume. >> you can find that easily in a lot of places. what about smoking, how does that affect your hair? >> i can't believe people still smoke. i know you are all in las vegas, and i know smoking is everywhere but we think about how it's bad for your skin, bad for your heart and lungs but smoking is terrible for your hair. it can make your hair like break in half in the middle of the shaft. so get rid of the cigarettes, everybody. >> yeah, that's a great thing to do. and it's good for you if you do that. quit the habit. where do we find your product? >> drink water instead. so the anti-aging hair treatment system is a three for one product. and so you get more bang for your buck, you can get it for less than $20 at walgreen. >> fantastic.

>> good morning. >> what a cast that you created here. it's going to be spectacular. >> so you named a few of them. but think about this. we just celebrated the 50th 50th anniversary of the sound of music, the movie. and in this 50th anniversary year, the tour is going out and the big production of sound of music is coming to the smith center, coming to las vegas for the first time. we were able to nab it and we're one of the cities that will make that tour. and that's just the beginning. one of my favorite shows last season was the carol king musical, called beautiful. and it's like a sound track to our lives, the songs are so great, and so many of them. people don't realize how many huge hit songs carol king wrote that it really is a sound track to our lives. it's coming to the smith center. beautiful, the carol king musical. i can't wait for it to come. and there is many, many others

9:40 am
the girl at different stages. >> oh, wow. >> different ages. it's fantastic. >> and that's in 2017? >> yes, that's our 16-17 season, and that's followed by a favorite, one of broadway's most toe tapping favorite shows, and that's motown the musical. motown is coming to town. >> and you know that's going to do very well here. some people that love motown in the valley had. >> it's true. and again you think about the songs, in this, there is so many huge hits. >> if you played them all it would be a five-day show. >> that's right. but you get your money's worth, couldn't be happier with that. we had two shows that were probably more requested than any others this season. people calling us and writing us and putting out on social media they wanted to see finding never land. this is the peter pan story. >> of course.

9:47 am
a lot of time our cravings are emotional. most of us are emotional eaters. we eat when we're happy, sad, tired, depressed, all of the above. and usually what i ask people when i'm teaching the contestants on the biggest loser who have emotional eating issues i like to ask them first to ask themselves, are you really hungry, or are you just eating because you're tired or bored? because a lot of times we're not even hungry. but if they really are, and they are having a craving for something seal or crunchy which is one of the most popular cravings, instead of reaching for a bag of chips, i always like to keep nuts available. 49 have only 150 calories, only 120 milligrams of sodium, but they are crunchy and salty and really good and tend to satisfy the craving.
9:48 am
portable, so it's easy to throw these in your gym bag and keep them in the car. >> i do that every time i go to the airport, pack business -- yeses to keep miko and snack on as you're waiting. >> you're already on the right track. >> should anyone try to goat go cold turkey? >> we do tend to go cold turkey on the show, because it really is a rehab detox situation. and that's kind of the way that we need to go because we just don't keep those things on hand. we don't have white flour, white rice, we don't have any soft drinks, so it's really, really important most of the time to go cold turkey. i recommend that at home, that people clear their cupboards out because when the craving strikes, if you only have foods like these on hand, you can't make a bad decision.
9:49 am
foods that you laid out for us? >> sure. another one that is really, really popular, most of us are eating too many carbs. we have juice, jam, we have toast, and lots and lots of bread. so what i like to recommend instead, pizza is a really popular craving. everybody loves cheese, but instead of the crust what i have here is a mushroom cap, inverted. filled with marry marinara sauce, pop that in the evans, and it's absolutely delicious. i wish you could smell it from here. and this is -- >> i'm hungry right now. >> less than 100 calories. the recipe is in the book. this is something that we've been making on the show since season one, and this is everybody's favorite. and another choice i have a
9:50 am
it has a few dried cherries in there, and the crunch of some pastacios. instead of being served on a piece of bread it's wrapped in a crunchy piece of remain. you're not having all the bread and the carbs. this recipe, all the recipes are inside the book. and the other craving that, of course, is really popular is for some -- try to enjoy the sweetness of a piece of fruit. we always have loads of berries on hand, apples, all sorts of fruit. and if that's not quite enough, and you really crave something chocolate, i have a wonderful recipe for a chocolate silk pudding. >> all looks so delicious. thank you so much for sharing these ideas with us this morning.
