6:30 pm
>> breaking news now, quick and fierce, a massive wildfire dubbed the cut fire is waging through the pass. it started small around 10:30, spreading fast, more than 6500 acres. take a look at where this is at the cajon pass, right next to the 15 between las vegas and los angeles, very close to devore, in the san bernardino county. place. we have team coverage, bryan callahan, right on the edge of the fire. we get to him in a bit first, what do you see, gino? >> sorry about the wind. we pulled off north of victorville here and we have a pretty impressive view of what this fire is doing. i'm going to let my photographer show you. we'll start with, look at the sun. it is hot pink. you can tell from the flames, mixed with the smoke, and then if you pan over a little bit, you see much darker smoke and then the contrast of where there isn't any smoke anymore shows
6:31 pm
are, how dark the smoke is. we pulled off just north of victorville. it's windy here, it's actually kind of chilly. my eyes are watering from the smoke. we are going to get back in the car after this and we're going to head to his -- a center where some people had to go. for now, back to >> we're out at 15 and ranchero road where the 15 is closed heading southbound. you see these three cars to my left? they were just let out by emergency crews from the burn area out here. you can still see some flames off in the distance. we've been out here for about 15 minutes. we've seen fire trucks, sheriff's patrol vehicles, everybody racing in there, emergency lights going. we've seen the chp turning a lot
6:32 pm
around, telling them to head north because the wind is pushing north. so theoretically could be pushing the flames north towards us. so we're keeping a cautious eye out here as we're keeping an eye on the fire and the emergency situation here. we've talked about 700 plus firefighters, personnel being out here on this fire. it seems like more are coming in by the minute to try and battle these flames that keep licking up. at one point you see this gray plume of smoke to the left, we saw flames up almost those power lines are in height. so intense flames just licking up. you can see emergency crews are leading more people out of this burned area right now. so still very active, trying to get people to safety in this area. we're continuing to monitor the situation and we'll keep you updated throughout the night. for now, back to you. >> tricia: the 15 was shut down shortly after the fire started. drivers took to twitter. one person posting a picture of the traffic with the headline,
6:33 pm
stopped you've been here, monitoring road conditions for more than three hours. what do you see? >> right now, like you said, the 15 is completely shut down, so crews are telling people to take highway 138 or the 215, but i have been seeing people online saying that the 138 looks like a parking lot. so if you do need to drive through the area, just anticipate that. but a parking lot is still going to be a better option than being now that governor jerry brown has declared a state of emergency, we're probably just going to see even more emergency crews out here. as far as the closure goes, this is what you're looking at. northbound 15 is shut down right at kenwood avenue. southbound shut down at rain chair zero road. if you can avoid the 15 all it is together, that is your safest option. >> thank you. and the smoke from the fire is so thick, this video is taken
6:34 pm
bizarre? the 138 runs right by -- right with california and the town has been evacuated. about 4500 people there. >> that's disgusting. >> that's unbelievable. >> this is extremely unhealthy, this kind of thick smoke, and are we going to see any of this coming here in our valley? >> bryan: i would say those are the unhealthful levels there. so far we're in the good quality. oftentimes when we do have fires in southwesterly flow that propels has smoke and soot our way, we get to t for sensitive groups helpful. i suspect that's more unhealthful for a widespread group. we'll be tracking throughout the evening. still good air quality but we have fairly stock winds in various areas, gusts out of the southwest, 24, 27 miles per hour. there's your air quality around the area. we'll be watching it closely. ozone is up but smoke and soot not so much. for tonight, we're anticipating some winds sticking around to a lesser is extent, maybe dropping down to about 10 miles per hour later on. but tomorrow they'll be up again
6:35 pm
and soot to our valley. we'll be watching that closely. >> back out to the fire, 13 action news is watching this closely. we'll have more in just a bit. our coverage continues on ktnv.com and on the ktnv mobile palm. another big story happening right here in las vegas, a suspected armed man shuts down an entire valley mall. 13 action news anchor leslie is live from the scene. she has more for us. >> reporter: you can see things hours earlier, that's when s.w.a.t. actually surrounded this t.j. maxx, right here, and we caught the moments when customers were actually told to run outside. look at this video. you see women and children evacuating from inside that t.j. maxx. metro telling us this all started after a man was what are everything a -- harassing a woman inside the store, he followed her to the parking lot and pulled out a gun and attempted to rob the woman. they're not sure if they knew each other.
6:36 pm
store within minutes, arresting the man. witnesses tell us then that they had told police there was possibly another suspect that then prompted this standoff. moat row does tell us when they got inside, they found no one. the man they had arrested earlier was taken into custody and will be charged with one count of robbery with a deadly weapon, and at this point you can see the store remains closed, but they do say they believe they have their person in custody. reporting live, 13 action news. >> the wildfire burning through the cajon pass shows no signs of stopping. thousands of people already evacuated. and it just keeps going. plus, banking on las vegas business, a small town is hoping a new attraction will draw a specific group of tourists from
