5:00 pm
we're doing a drop right now trying to get this under control. and if he pans over to the left you can possibly see the flames in the distance there. we are seeing scenes just like this all along the 15. earlier on our drive, we were making sure to listen to the san bernardino radio traffic. they were talking back and forth about how many fires were popping up. they weren't sure if it was all a part of this but certainly with the windy conditions we are experiencing, it is possible. pictures from earlier if we have those pictures. there is some of the scene last night. a rural community called oak hills, some residents who chose to ignore mandatory evacuation orders snapping these pictures as they escaped those flames. those people -- no one in that community, they did not lose their structures. and we want to take it back out here live to the scene here, a very active scene. a lot of smoke rising.
5:01 pm
firefighters who were standing by, working to try to contain this fire and then also working to try to save the homes of people. there are, um, multiple crews -- there are multiple crews that are set up alongside where the structures are to try to save it. we're going to continue to stay out here. we're actually going to get a little bit closer to the smoke and we continue to provide you with the very latest information and you can always get it on our website at ktnv.com as well. for now let's take it back to chris >> martha, thank you. the pass is still closed at this moment and right now it's about a 3-hour drive as it is. brian callahan is on the i-15 right now on his way to the cajon pass and, brian, what are you seeing out there? >> well, things are still fairly clear if you take a look out the front window out here, you can see what appears to be a cloud there. that actually looks like smoke
5:02 pm
it's been fairly windy out here i think that's moving some of the smoke out keeping things clear. nothing compared to that thick smoke that was enveloping the entire area around the firewheel we were out there last night and yesterday evening. but as long as the winds seem to be pushing the smoke out of the area but that's little bad for firefighters who are trying to contain this fire so right now we stopped several times. we stopped in jean, it looked es for people in vegas right now. as we jump over mountain pass things actually seem to clear up as we maybe got over some of the smoke that's settling in the valleys and then what i was just showing you out in the front of the car -- [audio breaking up] >> in baker. . >> we'll come back to brian a little bit later. the valley clearing up a little bit this morning, "channel 13 action news" first alert bryan scofield is tracking the air
5:03 pm
>> meteorologist: yeah it was very thick. a lot of people checking with me hey, this is a big blanket of haze and smoke and with the winds stirring everything around, it really has kind of diluted it a little bit. that's exactly what we're seeing. air quality levels, i suspect they'll still come up a little bit more not to the good level necessarily but we are still seeing some spots and we're talking about smoke and soot notozone that's in the moderate and good levels that's good news for us. let's go up to 3 stories and find out from dan bran? >> reporter: brian, considering, you know, we saw all that smoke, that haze this morning, things looking a lot better right now. i can actually see the mountains around us but we have video i want to show you from chopper 13, you could barely see the mountains in the distance. it was hard to see the strip. you could barely make out the stratosphere, yeah, that haze, that smoke settled overnight and created some health concerns especially for the sensitive people but things have really improved and you saw that in the
5:04 pm
around and pan out look at the mountains out to the north. so much better like considering this morning you could see the mountains pretty clear, that air, that wind really did mix things up and, yeah, a lot better right now than what we saw earlier but we do have that threat once again of that smoke settling overnight again so, yeah, that air quality is something we're going to watch over, say, 28 to 48 hours. we'll talk about air on the roof, things pretty nice. dan bran, "channel 13 action news," brian, back to you. >> thank you, dan. yeah, i don't think we're done with it considering we still have very brisk winds out there. they really haven't stopped, come out of the southwest. a few reporting areas not checking in but most areas checking in with 30-plus miles per hour winds earlier today. let me show you what we have for tonight. southwesterly flow turns out of the south that might help the air quality but i think we're in it for it tomorrow coming up in your "channel 13 action news" first alert forecast. >> spkr1: well, the i-13 is still closed and people driving
5:05 pm
have a tough choice to make right now. turn around and change their plans or find a detour. but if they choose to drive in the air, the fire is still extremely hazy. >> it got so hazy we thought we were going to be on the highway just seeing the fire right off the load that's what it looked like. it looks like we were just we're about to pass by it. >> we're told the closure could remain in effect all the day possibly longer. >> and team coverage continues now with our scripts repor he's been on the scene today but he had to move because the situation made the situation too dangerous. he's live near the cajon pass right now. >> reporter: yeah, as we are in lidle creek right now and behind me you can see firefighters are doing a back burn trying to get rid of any last fuel that's left. these mountains right here completely scorched on the other side of them. that's i-15 and so we are about -- i would say 30 minutes north of san bernardino and this
5:06 pm
area a little while ago. as you mentioned we had to move our location because the the flames were just getting too close. you can see how close they got with -- with, actually, it's behind smoke and flames right now it came behind the fence and they're burning up every last bit of flu so it doesn't reignited. take a look at the video, they had the huge dc planes that were dropping flame retardant out of this fire to try to get any flame retardant. that wasn't, no lines have held so far. any sort of control on this side of the fire and it's because it had to burn up the entire ridge. these firefighters are going to be moving up less than a mile from us where some homes are here very soon. this town has been evacuated but a lot of people -- some people we talked to didn't need those evacuations. take a listen. >> i witnessed yesterday -- they just did an incredible job and hopefully they're able to do the same thing today.
5:07 pm
live, you see firefighters controlling the back burn here pulling some hose out burning up the last bit of fuel before this campground outside of lidle creek. they, in fact, have done a great job with almost surgical precision stopping the fire before it came into town. the air attacks weren't holding it so they had to get ground crews in here and it appears what it's taking for a lot of these communities. we'll continue to watch this for you and bring you the latest as this fire continues to develop. so far officially n on this 80,000 people still evacuated. back to you. >> all right. todd, thanks for the update and to give you an idea just how quickly this fire has spread it started yesterday around 10:30 am and during our 3:00 pm forecast it was 2,000 acres. this time yesterday it was 6500 acres. and by our 11:00 newscast last night, it was up to 18,000 acres. now, it's more than 30,000 acres. and a fire has grown just over to 45 square miles.
5:08 pm
here's a map of las vegas. the orange area you see is size of the fire. that area stretches from spring valley all the way up to centennial hills that's one-third of las vegas. the fire also covers more area than the entirety of sparks or mesquite. and it's not burning very far away from us right here in the valley. i just want to put the location in perspective for us. it's burning out in cajon just, um, south of backwardsville big effect of people on the 15 because right now the 15 is shut down in both directions, specifically, where the 15 meets the 215 and all the way to oak hill road. completely shut down there. there was some hope that it was going to open up later on this evening but we did get an update that is not going to be the case. so if you do need to travel through this area the best option for you is to head south and take the 10 over as if you're going to palm springs. it is going to add a long time
