seen, because of this extremely dry vegetation, it just crumbles in my hand. this is the perfect fuel, igniting scenes like this all along the i-15. we have been looking at this, along the canyon, moving around quickly, there are multiple crews trying to drop water on this, but it really does not seam to be helping very much. we're going to pan down and show you the county road where we do see a law enforcement official shots and fire trucks, racing by to get to that scene. we just spoke with a man, his friend lives close by to the road that you're looking at, and he told me that they just had to do a mandatory evacuation of very exotic animals. he has a business down there. so very tense, a very involving situation. we're going to continue to stay on top of this for you and bring you all of the latest.

you. >> we want to talk about how this fire is affecting us here in the valley because right now the 15 is completely shut down in both directions to give you an idea of the area we're talking about, it's shut down starting right here. this is right near oak hill road, near ranchero road, where the 15 starts being shut down. and it goes all the way down to where the 15 and the 215 split. so, again, shut down in both directions. so if you do need to drive through the area, the best option is to further south, actually a lot further south, and take the 10 as if you're going to palm springs. that area is open now. you should be clear from emergency vehicles. we want to give them as much room as possible. and it is for your safety. we have seen cars burn up on interstates in fires similar to this so we want to give everyone as much space and just give you your safety if you can, please avoid the 15. at least until the end of the night. we'll keep an eye on this. if it opens back up, we'll let you know.

headaches for anyone traveling between here and los angeles. forcing them to find alternate routes. 13 action news reporter bryan callahan headed out early this afternoon, going directly toward the blaze. he joins us now live. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: well, we're about 10 to 15 minutes away from the closure at this point, on the 15. i am seeing a lot of traffic coming northbound, more than we saw at this time yesterday. assuming a lot of those people started taking those detours to get between los angeles and las vegas at this point. a trickle of cars along with us heading southbound, likely going to take some of these detours as well. but the smoke is actually lightening up a little bit as we get closer to the fire. kind of surprisingly. it could just be the winds playing a factor. we'll keep an eye on the situation throughout the night as we get there, and update you
6:34 pm
>> right now, a live look outside. right now all that smoke making its way into the valley, prompting an air quality advisory. let's check in with 13 first alert chief meteorologist bryan scofield. >> bryan: you heard about the smoke lightening up a little bit that callahan was talking about. truly wind direction makes all the difference. and they're seeing wind in all different directions out there so it's no surprise. we've been seeing mixing so as heavy as it was earlier today, things have changed pretty ex potentially for this evening. that being the unhealthful levels for sensitive groups, but as far as soot and dust and smoke, that's in the moderate category across the valley. let's go three stories up, check with dan. you have some amazing shots from earlier. i want you to show the folks at home that. if you got up early, that's what they saw, right? >> absolutely. completely different this morning than what you're seeing now. look at the video chopper 13 caught. you can see a lot of smoke, the soot is sitting in the air.
6:35 pm
you can barely see the mountains, especially up towards the north. the spring mountains were covered as well. so completely different this afternoon. those winds really did kind of mix out the air a little bit, kind of moved all that smoke and soot out of there. just take a live look now up towards the mountains to the north and you can see them a lot better than what you saw this morning. things much clearer. our levels have dropped tremendously with that smoke. that is some good news. but as we go through the night, that wind will calm and once again we might watch that smoke move back i in the valley. so a very similar thing for your thursday as what you woke up today. that's something we'll have to watch and let you know if it can move in here. if it does, sensitive people, if you have asthma, elderly, children, you might have to take some precautions and stay indoors until once again it clears out because i think tomorrow, with the winds mixing up, it should move out of here. right now outside las vegas, things are pretty clear. 13 action news. >> bryan: if you want to do something like just even eat at
