this storm we've been following and following. it should become a tropical storm later today. that's why we have a hurricane watch for some of the coastal waters. tropical storm warning from north of tampa to tallahassee all the way to panama city. the timing of this is important. it is later thursday, through the morning of friday, for the landfall of this storm. so we're watching the track there take it. the impacts would be five to ten inches of rain, 15 inches max. two to four feet of storm surge in some spots and of course those tropical storm-force winds, then we go to the pacific, why we have so much going on. madeline churning, lester churning. all toward hawaii. if the big island gets hit it will be the first land falling hurricane in recorded history. that's why we have our neal karlinsky there on hurricane warning this morning. >> reporter: ginger, good morning. we've already been getting hit with intermittent rains here, and you can see they started boarding up the buildings in hilo, hawaii, very unusual behavior for the hawaiian islands, and they are expecting possibly 25-foot wave, torrential waves, high winds and flooding here as a result.

all right, now to that dangerous air scare. a flight taking off from texas encountering severe turbulence overnight forced to make an emergency landing in ireland. passengers rushed to the hospital. and abc's david kerley has the latest now from reagan national airport. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, amy. that jetliner was nearing the british isles when it hit this unexpected turbulence and several passengers and crew members were hurt. 223 people on board. the tracking site flight aware shows that several hundred miles out the jet hits turbulence and the pilot calls out to head to shannon airport to make an emergency landing in ireland. on the ground, several people were treated.

including two united crew members, one crew member still in the hospital. the others were taken back to the airport, they'll use another aircraft to get them to the airport. we're going to get the latest now on maine's governor paul lepage, under pressure over comments many called racist, also a voice mail filled with profanity he left for one of his critics in the legislature and seemed to suggest he might resign then backtracked. the latest. >> reporter: good morning, george. some mixed messages for sure. today lepage is due to meet with the democratic lawmaker he challenged to a duel. no duel expected but you never know. under fire for his racially charged rhetoric, the maine governor gave a radio interview in which he did not rule out resigning. >> i'm looking at all options. i'm not going to say that i'm not going to finish it. i'm not saying that i am going to finish it. >> reporter: then, just as his critics started to celebrate, he

well, now to some frightening moments at a gas station in connecticut. take a look as a driver backs into one of the pumps knocking it over and then sparking a fire that quickly engulfs two vehicles, one of the cars had two children in the backseat. a woman on the other side of the pump quickly ran in and was able to pull the kids to safety just in time. they were not injured. the driver who backed into the pump apparently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake so another unfortunate accident. but thankfully, everyone got out okay. >> could have been so much worse. could have been a huge explosion. we're going to move on to the u.s. open, triumphant return to new york for serena williams. big win for her. t.j. holmes here with more. >> yes, you know, all eyes are always on serena but especially this time because, what, she just came off that loss, that shocking loss in rio three weeks ago. she just pulled out of a tournament last week because of a shoulder injury. she's going to be 35 next month, tough first round opponent. how is she going to respond?

because, hello, he's holding a gun to me. >> reporter: curran says the hours-long standoff with police began when someone brought over a box of expensive diamond jewelry which she says she admired. >> and i was just standing over admiring it not touching it and then one of chris' friends said, back away from the diamonds, and that's when chris came in and said i'm so sick of all of you people. took the gun out like this. put it in my face and said get the "f" out. >> did you think that he would pull the trigger? >> i thought he was going to shoot me. >> reporter: the los angeles police department receiving the frantic 911 call at 3:00 a.m. tuesday morning. >> two females, unknown crying and asking for help. >> reporter: police surrounding the star's home trying to make contact with him while the singer took to instagram posting his claims of innocence. >> when you get the warrant or whatever you need to do you're going to walk right up in here and you're going to see nothing, you idiots. >> reporter: hours later brown and several of his friends funneling out of the house and

this isn't the singer's first run-in with the law. in 2009 brown pleaded guilty to felony assault and was sentenced to five years' probation, a year-long domestic violence class and six months community service for assaulting his then-girlfriend superstar rihanna. brown completed that probation early last year. overnight, brown's attorney tweeting, thank you to everyone for their support and well wishes. chris is out and well. the allegations against him are demonstrably false. brown was released after posting $250,000 bail. we've also learned overnight that curran is wanted for questioning in new york in a grand larceny case. according to the new york police department, she and a friend are -- stole a wallet from another woman. amy. >> all right. we appreciate that, kayna. joining us now, abc news senior legal correspondent sunny hostin. sunny, there is a lot to weed

brown? >> well, it certainly looks bad, amy, because we are now seeing what seems to be a history of violent and abusive behavior starting with the 2009 assault on rihanna. he did serve many, many years of probation, approximately six years, that probation was lifted in march of 2015 just last year but only after he violated that probation for assaulting someone in a washington, d.c., hotel in 2014. and so we're seeing this over and over and over comes to chris brown and that is not a good place to be in the criminal justice system. we see recidivism very, very often when it comes to violent and abusive behavior so yet now another complaint about this kind of behavior is going to be looked at very, very closely by prosecutors reviewing the case. >> and speaking of seeing chris brown, we saw a lot of him throughout this on these instagram rants. what do you make of those and from a legal perspective what do they do to the case?

are going to look at it. let's be clear, he hasn't been formally charged yet. his arraignment is going to be september 20th. i did reach out to his attorney my good friend mark geragos, who says that these allegations are completely false. but i think that it's very fascinating that social media is possibly going to be used as evidence in this case or at least reviewed by prosecutor, not only did chris brown the alleged defendant in this case post it. ray j. was also in the home and he posted on instagram saying this was false, and then the alleged victim also posted on instagram indicating that this was true. and so, you know, i think we're seeing over and over again the clash between technology and social media and the law and that being used as evidence. we saw it very, very clearly in the killing of philando castile when that facebook live piece just came out and everyone got to see what was happening at the

>> yeah, but, of course, everything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. sunny hostin, thanks so much. we are going to move on now to that stunning shooting in a new york suburb. medical school dean attacked outside a deli in chappaqua. good morning, eva. >> reporter: a fired professor looking for revenge goes after his former boss. police say they think he came to a chappaqua diner with a purpose -- to shoot someone. it's the upscale town known for its idyllic setting and two very famous residents, a former president and a presidential hopeful. but on monday morning chappaqua, new york, became the scene of a dramatice shootout. less than a mile away from the clinton family home, a popular and beloved dean at new york's mt. sinai medical school shot in broad daylight along with an innocent bystander.

behavior but still seems surprising given the debate about his sentence. >> i don't think that it's not only surprising, i think it's outrage that people have about this sentence, george. i mean, the bottom line is he's only going to spend three months in a jail cell for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman behind a garbage dumpster. i think we can all agree that that sentence is way too short. is it a surprise that he's only going to serve three months out of the six months? no, because in california, basically they have this prison realignment going on and so most inmates only serve half of their sentence. >> there was no discretion from the judge on getting out early. >> no, there was discretion, the prosecutors recommended six years. he was facing 14 years but, because of the judge's discretion in this case, he only was sentenced to six months, thus, leading to the outrage in this case. loophole in california that now

try to close that, i understand lawmakers there in that state just passed a new measure in hopes of addressing cases just like this one. tell us about it. >> that's right. what is remarkable is that under california law, up until this time, amy, you could rape, sexually assault an unconscious person and not have a mandatory prison sentence. the judge had a lot of -- not leniency but a lot of discretion. now, 66-0 vote, a bipartisan vote, california lawmakers have now found that it's going to be a mandatory three-year sentence for this exact behavior. sending a message to sexual assault victims everywhere that they matter and that people that sexually assault must spend three years in prison when the victim is unconscious. i say very, very wonderful for california. but this is something that we should see across the country. >> 100%.

much. well, now, to an alarming story about the newest victims of identity theft. children. this sacramento mom shocked to discover someone using her 15-year-old daughter's social security number to get a job. the second of her kids to have their identity stolen. becky worley is here with more on this. so, is this just something parents -- another thing parents have to worry about? and how unusual, both of her children. have to think about. one report saying children are 51 times more likely to have their identity stolen than adults and the reason, children are a perfect target for this crime. they have a blank slate that an identity thief can use to create a new personality, a new record. and kids don't check their credit very often. it's not like my 8-year-olds are applying for a mortgage or a credit card. at least i hope they're not. >> what can parents do? >> there's some obvious red flags, george. if your kid is getting bill collection notices, tax bill due and they don't have any income

credit offers sent to you, but our kids want to check their credit. it's not like it is for adults. we go to annualcreditreport.com. this is one site that the government says is free online. easy peasy. you try to do that for a kid. i tried to do it for my son last night. this is what i needed. all his personal information plus three copies of his birth certificate, three copies of his social security card, three copies of my driver's license or passport. three copies of my current utility bills to prove where i live and then i have to mail that to all three separate credit -- >> six months later we will see what happens. >> good luck with that. >> a lot easier for them to steal your child's identity. wow. >> okay. thanks very much. we have a fascinating story now, from space actually. it echoes this classic scene from the movie "contact" with jodie foster who hears aliens

police are looking for suspects involved in an overnight shooting on the eastside of town. police say 3 suspects approached a group of people. one of the suspects pistol- whipped 2 victims. when the victims tried running away, shots were fired. a man was grazed in the head by one of the bullets. he was taken to the hospital,
