tv   Good Morning America  ABC  September 6, 2016 7:00am-9:00am PDT

7:00 am
good morning, america. dead heat. donald trump takes a lead in a new poll this morning as he battles clinton in a fight for ohio. both candidates in cleveland, ramping up their campaigns in the swing state. clinton suffering a coughing fit on the stump. but still taking a swing at trump. >> every time i think about trump i get allergic. >> his campaign immediately >> i don't joke. she jokes. look at the deal she's made. >> david muir sits down with both candidates and their running mates right here this morning. >> good morning, america. back to school health alert. the cdc and pediatricians out with a major headline about flu vaccines and nasal sprays. dr. ashton joins us live. an abc news exclusive. brown speaks out this morning about his arrest. >> i cannot wait till the truth
7:01 am
>> accused of threatening a former beauty queen with a gun. what really happened behind the scenes of that hours-long police standoff at his home. new details only on "gma." serena "the superstar" williams does it again. >> game. >> what a serving display. >> making history at the u.s. open, winning more grand slam matches than any player, man or woman ever. now the greatest of all time has a new record in sight. and good morning, america. how about that, serena williams and how about that voice we just heard. welcome back, michael. >> thank you, george. thank you. >> come on now. hey, hey. >> no, be quiet. no, no, no, no. >> it is great to have you full time with us. it does feel like the first day of school around here, doesn't it? >> only thing i'm missing is my
7:02 am
it does feel like that though. >> you did have that, didn't you? >> i did and the kiss one too. >> we'll meet your mini michael coming up. we're going to start out with politics. the labor day has passed and the presidential race, 63 days before the final vote and both bearing down on the big battleground states. you see their planes sharing a tarmac in cleveland yesterday. we'll have those exclusively interviews with david muir in just a moment. let's start with cecilia vega who has all the latest from a busy labor day. >> george, busy is right. good morning to you. no holiday for these candidates. traditionally the campaigns kick into high gear until after labor day but nothing about this is traditional. this is the final sprint. >> reporter: a political traffic jam hitting this ohio tarmac. hillary clinton and donald trump landing just steps from one another before hitting the trail. >> welcome to our big plane.
7:03 am
>> reporter: 275 days without a press conference and clinton broke in her new plane by answering reporters' questions and going after donald trump. >> he's temperamentally unfit to be president and commander in chief. but if you look at his behavior toward putin and russia, that is a serious indication of how unfit he is. >> reporter: but her inaugural ride on hill force one interrupted by a coughing fit. >> can i get some water? >> reporter: this after a two-minute coughing fit earlier on the campaign trail. >> every time i think about trump, i get allergic. boy, we have 363 days to go. >> reporter: trump's campaign manager responding immediately tweeting, must be allergic to media.
7:04 am
trump also racing to the finish line in ohio. the republican nominee now saying he will do all three debates. the only reason he wouldn't? >> hurricanes, natural disaster. no, i expect to do all three. >> reporter: you heard it. he says he'll do all three. hillary clinton brought out her allies. they were out in force spanning the map. even bernie sanders hit the trail for the very first we now know next week first lady michelle obama will campaign for hillary clinton for the first time in this race. clinton, robin, is taking no chances right now. >> both were in ohio and both sat down with one person, "world news tonight" anchor david muir. hillary clinton and tim kaine you have taking aim, fighting back about questions about her stamina.
7:05 am
63 days but we're here longer than that. all four saying yes sitting down with us. we first met up with hillary clinton and tim kaine moments after touching down on clinton's new plane dubbed hill force one. they have a new book but they also have that brand new poll this morning. this race is tightening dramatically and here's your first look. labor day is here. >> labor day is here. >> i hear you just landed in ohio and i understand you flew hill force one. >> we did. >> did you notice out the window the trump/pence plane, too? >> we did. >> is that a sign it's game on? >> i think it might be. >> 63 days to go until election day and you mentioned donald trump in this country, secretary clinton. and people know he wants to build a wall. tough on immigration. i'm curious, when a voter is asked what hillary clinton stands for with 63 days to go, what do you hope they'll say? >> i hope they'll say i stand for the kind of future that will help them and their families. we want to get the economy to work for everyone, not just those at the top. the best i can tell is donald
7:06 am
which we now know after his unfortunate trip to mexico, the mexicans have said they're not paying for it. >> you talk about the trip to mexico. donald trump said they did not discuss who would pay for that wall. the mexican president afterwards said they did discuss it and that mexico would not pay for it. your campaign said, quote, it turns out trump didn't just choke, he got beat in the room and lied about it. is that what you believe? >> that's what it sounded like because what happened is what we call a diplomatic incident, because he came out saying one thing and the mexican president contradicted him almost immediately. so, it is clear that he went down with a mission, it's been the mission of his whole campaign from the very first day to demonize immigrants, to call mexicans rapists and criminals, to do everything he could to stir up all kinds of bad feelings about hard working
7:07 am
he didn't raise it so he did choke. >> on those trips, those recent trips donald trump tweeted hillary clinton didn't go to louisiana, she didn't go to mexico, she doesn't have the drive or stamina to make america great again. he goes on to say does she look presidential, fellas? give me a break. >> can i just -- does she look presidential, fellas? that's an idiotic comment. from donald trump. i got added to this ticket about 11, 12 weeks, 100 days from the election. this great public servant has been on the field for 17 or 18 months, it's hard to keep up with her. the day he tweeted out hillary didn't come to mexico, does she have the energy, she was here in ohio talking to the american legion. >> we do press hillary clinton on the fbi revealing their investigation into her e-mails. what she said she didn't recall and an aide breaking her blackberries with a hammer, we learned about that in the investigation and we'll get into that. >> how does she explain the polls are tightening?
7:08 am
these polls to tighten but a lot people have looked at these weeks and said donald trump is out there a lot more than she was and spent more time with donors. i asked has she been outcampaigned by him and she said no. we'll get into that. >> we're looking forward to the debates. what does she expect from trump? >> she said trump said after every one of those republican debates i won. she said that is not lost on her. she takes that into this preparation and takes it seriously. you can tell she is already prepping. >> you had a busy day. you raced across the state and spoke with both of them. >> we didn't get a speeding ticket but it was close. we headed to the county fair where donald trump was, a huge crowd gathered outside for donald trump and his running mate. he pointed to those crowds but he also pointed to the polls, saying he is on the rise. what does he mean when he talks about hillary clinton's stamina, we asked and about what she said, did he choke? isn't it divide and conquer? 63 days to go. >> it is. very rarely will we be together
7:09 am
we like it because we like each other but the fact is it's better when mike goes someplace and i go someplace. >> you often talked about hillary clinton's stamina and said she didn't look presidential. >> i really do believe that if what do you mean by that? >> i don't think she has a presidential look and you need a presidential look. you have to get the job done. i think if she went to mexico she would have had a total failure. we had a big success. >> when you talk about her not looking presidential, are you >> i'm talking about general -- by the way, she says things about me that are horrible. the single greatest asset i have according to those who know me, is my temperament, but she came up with this madison avenue line let's talk about his temperament. it's the single greatest asset i have is my temperament. >> reporter: trump knows his opponent is here too. hillary clinton who is also here in ohio as you know told us a short time ago you choked, that
7:10 am
this wall has been central to your campaign. did you choke? >> so, let me just tell you about joking. i don't joke. she jokes. look at the deals she's made. she's responsible for so many bad things that happened to our country including the signing by her husband of nafta which has drained our country of its jobs. i've been given a plus including by you people but i've been a pluses for the job i did in mexico and the fact that mexico will pay for the wall. it was discussed that it wouldn't be discussed but they know my stance and i know their stance. >> did the mexicanre break his word in talking about it? >> we had ground rules and that's okay. see who winds in the end. we'll win 100% they'll pay for the wall. >> governor pence, you're making news in revealing you'll release your tax returns. >> sure. pretty quick read. >> pretty quick read. >> i'm curious. do you think the american voter has the right to see the tax returns of donald trump before they vote on election day? >> you know, i'm very pleased to provide our tax returns.
7:11 am
and there will be pretty clear evidence we haven't profited from our 16 years in and around public life. >> but, governor, i'm asking about donald trump and every presidential candidate going back 40 years -- >> look, i'm releasing my tax returns. donald trump will release his. i'll give mine to y'all this week and he'll provide his after a routine audit is done is there as far as mine are concerned the only one that cares is the press. it's no the a big deal. >> you don't think there are any voters. >> i think people don't care. >> i'm not sure about that. we've heard fr saying they want to see his tax return and he is the only one in recent history not to release. >> we'll press him further and we also ask him about immigration, his speech in phoenix, and where he's going with undocumented immigrants. he does leave the door open in this interview for undocumented immigrants to stay had this country. you'll see how he answers that and the debate we asked about the debate too. anyone playing hillary, we asked. he said i'm not preparing in a traditional way. we'll think about it. not even holding mock debates. >> everything has been
7:12 am
>> why should it change now? i think you have more to say about this and you will tonight, more of your interview on "world news tonight" with this guy, david muir. >> thanks, guys. back to school here. >> i know. it is. >> back to matthew dowd. >> i brought the pencil. >> our chief political analyst and martha raddatz will join us. let's talk about the new poll from cnn, shows donald trump among likely voters pulling ahea margin of error. hillary clinton still leading among registered voters. interesting contrast. >> i think this poll is significant, probably the most significant piece of data we've sign in the entire general election and demonstrates among the people most excited, most engaged donald trump has a lead and that should concern the hillary clinton campaign. the other thing that i think should concern the clinton campaign coming out of the poll is that donald trump has now blown through his cap. he used to be capped at 42 or 43 now up to 45. he's at his personal best. if hillary clinton thought she could coast in the home stretch
7:13 am
up her track shoes and buy a bigger box of cough drops and be prepared for a very, very close race. >> looks like a close race right now. and most of the candidates now are spending most of their time in about 12 of those battleground states where she does still hold a lead. >> she still does. if you take a look at the panoply of battleground states she leads almost every single one but one thing to keep in mind is the battle ground states are lagging indicators of where this race is. as the race ch then the battleground states change. i would expect in the next week many of those battleground states blue now will go to purple. >> there hasn't been recent polling on that. let's bring in martha rad rats. martha, congratulations, you'll moderate that debate on october 9th and spending time in those states talking to voters in the key state of pennsylvania. >> exactly, george. you know, we talked to voters who reflect what poll numbers say about unfavorability. and the people we talked to who are clinton supporters have serious trust issues with her.
7:14 am
some of it is because of old controversies but a lot of people are absorbing the message that trump is putting out there that she's not telling the truth. as for trump the voters who are still trying to decide, especially there in pennsylvania, do worry about temperament issues despite what he told david muir. >> martha, matt, thanks very much. from an ongoing political storm to two tropical systems on the satellite, hermine spinning off the coast of new england as makes landfall in cabo this morning and, of course, ginger is tracking it all. >> good morning. yes, cabo san lucas on attack there looking impressive, 90 plus-mile-per-hour winds, cat 1 and makes its way into the southwest. potential flash flooding but that's from nantucket where the wind is blowing and trees and power lines down. that's that same system we've been following for weeks. you can see the track there. you know it made landfall in
7:15 am
southeast. then this weekend people were going, ah, what about that hurricane we heard about? well, it became a post-tropical cyclone and kept going east leaving us drier. we are still under tropical storm warning up in parts of southern new england along the coast. michael? >> thank you, ginger. now to a big headline this morning about the flu vaccine in your children. and abc's dr. jennifer ashton joins us now with the details. good morning, doctor. >> good morng >> just straight to it. what do parents need to know? >> for some historical perspective a few months ago the cdc evaluated the last three years of flu seasons, flu vaccines and found that the nasal flu vaccine, that nasal mist largely given to children really did not work. this morning the american academy of pediatrics came out with their recommendation, no surprise here, they echoed what the cdc said and saying the flu vaccine in the nasal mist form
7:16 am
to be crystal clear here, they are recommending that every child above the age of 6 months gets the injectable flu vaccine. >> a lot would do that because the injectable is not comfortable for children. >> or adults. >> what do you tell patients about the importance of flu vaccine, there are a lot of people who don't take them. >> 100%. i take this seriously. i have been diagnosed with influenza twice, both times i thought i was going to die. i took care of a pregnant teenager who did die of complications of influenza. about 80% of the kids who die of flu were not vaccinated. take this seriously. pediatrician. >> you know what, thank you for your advice. i hope everybody heeds and accepts it. let's go to amy for today's other top stories, starting with more problems at the airport. >> unfortunately, michael. good morning, everyone. another computer outage is affecting a major airline, this time it is british airways having trouble checking in passengers just weeks after similar glitches at delta and southwest. in this case about a third of british airways' flights were delayed.

see nothing. you idiots. >> reporter: but abc news has now learned chris brown's defense team led by famed attorney mark geragos believed the r & b singer was set up by the accuser herself. his defense team sharing with abc news a text message purportedly sent by baylee to a friend just minutes before the 911 call was made. the text message reading, this freak, chris brown, is kicking me out of his house because i called his friend's jewelry fake. i'm going to set him up and call the cops and say that he tried to shoot me and that will teach him a lesson. i'm going to set his -- expletive -- up. >> were there any guns in the house at the time? >> there was a search that was done. they went in and said that they had a description of a piece of jewelry, that jewelry was not found in the house. they went in and she said that there was a gun. as far as i know the gun was not found in the house. >> reporter: also at the heart of the investigation the surveillance cameras on brown's

given her phone to police investigators. they clearly have plenty of work left to do. guys. >> matt, thanks very much. let's talk to dan abrams about that. matt hits on the big question. if this is real, this text is real sure seems leak a smoking gun. >> if this text is real and no other context out there, this case is over. i mean, this is it. sure, maybe there's an explanation somehow. maybe there is another text. maybe there is surveillance footage or other witnesses but if those words were said by her at that time, i don't see how prosecutors move forward. >> you say the case is over, they can't move forward against chris brown. what about charges against her? >> it's possible. if they become convinced she filed a false police report and they have to be convinced of that, she could face charges. that's what chris brown's team is now saying is that she's the one who should be facing charges here. not him. but i think it is fair to call this a smoking gun if it's authentic. >> i think a lot of people would
7:36 am
brown could have handled it better. >> he behaved terribly. look, this may not have been a standoff, right? mark geragos is upset it was called a standoff because geragos's position is i told him wait there, i'll be there eventually. i'll get there. when they get a warrant, et cetera, we'll let them in, no problem in brown did say that. >> you can >> the media coverage of this was a little overstated, calling it a standoff, but for chris brown to go on instagram and rail against the police, it wasn't the police who decided to go to his house. they got a call from this woman alleging that chris brown pointed a gun at her. that's not their fault. >> they have to respond. >> they have to respond. >> so, look, chris brown can have other beefs with the police but at that time that was not a smart move in your goal is not to get arrested and not to get prosecuted, but, again, if this text is real, i don't think there's going to be any prosecution.

we got it all set out on the big board. it is time for our big board and team of insiders standing by live for more on the morning's top stories. sunny hostin here at the table. we'll talk to her in a minute. first let's start with the latest on dale earnhardt jr. the nascar fan favorite stepping away from the wheel for the season, saying he's suffering from concussion complications after that accident this summer. it's the fourth documented
7:40 am
craven is going to join us and talk about that as well. good to see you here. i know you went through this, as well and had some concussions during your racing days. tell us the experience you went through and what junior might be going through. >> good morning, robin. it's very uncomfortable, it's awkward, a little clumsy and may be paralyzing because you do not prepare for becoming compromised or injured. just like you don't prepare for getting into a wreck. you're dominated by winning races. and if you look at this 41 car tumbling through the air that's not something you prepare for. you react to it. so dale earnhardt jr.'s circumstance is this, he spent most of his life pushing the limits on how fast he can go in a car. what will that car give him and what will that racetrack allow him? what will his talent provide him. and then when you get hurt, you have to surrender. you're depending on the people around you, the doctors, your team. and that's not typical of an athlete. they want control.
7:41 am
it's really, at this point, what his body will allow him to do. he's not considering -- ricky, he said he's not thinking about retirement, he told his fans that but considering the circumstances, should he think about that? >> so we know this, he's having trouble with his vision. he's having trouble with balance and gotten out of a race car twice because of these concussions and i'm sure you can relate, michael, you don't always get to vote on this. number one, you got to become healthy again, right? that's the first hurdle you have to clear. number two, even after becoming healthy, you're 42 years old. you're about to get married. you're exposed to other things in life that are a lot of fun. do you want to take the risk associated with being a race car driver again? >> he has so many fans, so many fans. >> he has so many fans but then you got to weigh it and life after work. >> how do you do that? playing in the nfl having injuries and that, what ricky was talking about, how do you --
