school. confusion.... anger.... and fear. parents say... they were left in the dark..... as their kids were stuck inside..... walter johnson junior high school.... during a mercury- contamination scare. tonight.. clark county school officials hold a meeting to clear up some of that confusion. 13 action news anchor christopher king is live at johnson junior high. school is cancelled today and tomorrow. that's because the federal environmental protection agency crews are still cleanining up here. quarantined here overnight. parents complain..the school district left them in the dark. and today's meeting didn't give them many answers. clark-county school officials meet with parents..to calm their fears.

"why were the parents given confusing information?" capt young "you talk to other parents-they say they got good information-so we did regular briefings-sometimes and houyr-sometimes an hour and a half." :09:19 "this meeting was a failure to beging with and that's unfortunate- it just heightened the frustration of the parents." school police say..they told parents what they could..when they could. but they had to screen 12-hundred students. that takes time..and can cause confusion. an epa spokesman tells me..dozens of kids had traces of mercury on their pm. live at johnson junior high, ck, 13 action news. researching metallic mercury exposure and found out why there's so much concern. according to the e-p-a.. high exposure can cause kidney damage.. respiratory failure and even death. other symptoms include tremors.. headaches and insomnia. but we want to stress.. those health effects depend on several factors including the amount of exposure..

we aren't showing that teen's face.... as a pre-caution. this mom now sharing her story... for one reason ... to warn parents to be pro-active... urge the community.... to stop the violence. we're learning a lot more tonight about a deadly hit and run yesterday afternoon near east bonanza and pecos. 13 action news reporter gina lazara is live in the studio with more about the victim. gina. darryl white was found in the landscaping at the exit of playa vista apartments on east bonanza. we're learning tonight....he was a father of an almost i had a chance to speak with darryl's dad on the phone this afternoon.... and he told me darryl was an awesome dad and a huge family man. darryl's dad also confirmed to me that his girlfriend -- who was arrested on suspicion of murder -- is the mother of his child. police say that woman -- 26-year-old "la-teera" howard ran darryl over in her car -- leaving him to die in the landscaping.... before she ditched the vehicle -- and ran away from the scene.

stalemate... that was the story coming out of the stadium committee today. no movement on the key issue 750 million dollars in public money, and the public can invest that money, but not will not budge, so what's going to happen next week? they say there might be a vote, but there's no majority on that committee yet. jon ralston, 13 action news. something new is slowly being added to the phys-ed curriculum in the clark county school district. by the end of 2017.. 50 schools in the district will have crossfit. it was made possible by a grant from the southern nevada health district. students we talked with today who are already taking-part in crossfit say it's a great stress reliever.. and the teachers say they work hard to make sure it's safe. 11.51.11 they have to demonstrate to me that they can move correctly and that they can move safely 14 if they can do those two things, then

we watched a class at west career and technical academy.. but crossfit is also being conducted at several middle schools and elementary schools. some california high school football players are making national headlines... after they did something very sweet for a cheerleader.... named "ashley"... who is suffering from leukemia. all -57- players placed..... an orange rose.... at her feet. it was all started.... by a friend.... on the team. "the oh-siris rex spacecraft" has started.... its -7- year journey. it's mission could reveal secrets..... in our solar system.... as well as protect our planet.... in the future. kevin quinn explains... why the mission is so important. nasa's target for the osiris-rex mission: an asteroid millions of miles away. scientists want to study it because it could contain the building blocks of life. getting a sample of that back in the lab will help us understand much better how water got to earth.. the form the water was in originally and may even what the raw materials of life were before they can study the sample, they must collect it. a tricky proposition. it's a seven year round trip following launch and involves getting the spacecraft to orbit close enough and steady enough at an average speed of 63,000 miles per hour to collect a

but scientists say never before has that large of an amount been brought back to earth from an asteroid. that hasn't been done for more than 40 years. its super difficult to do. another reason to study the asteroid: its as tall as the empire state building and every six years it comes very close to earth. scientists say there's a 1 in 3000 chance it could collide with us in the next couple hundred years. it would at least be would end all life on earth but it would be a bad day learning more about the asteroid, its composition and orbit could help nasa figure out a way to avoid such a global catastrophe. it's something unheard of for us in the valley... many students in philadelphia will have a short day at school tomorrow because of "scorching heat." officials say classes will end at noon at all public schools and some private schools..

burritos will be flying over the campus of virginia tech on a regular basis. it's all thanks to a test being conducted by google to deliver chipotle burritos from a special kiosk.. by drone. students and employees can place their order.. the burritos will then be made by a food truck on site.. then flown by drone to a designated spot on campus. google says it's test-flying food to learn how to package sensitive cargo for drone delivery. a well-known nfl player is we'll explain how part of the deal could bring him to cashman field. and... there's an app for everything these days. and now....
