9:21 am
welcome back to the blend. it's an important and often controversial top nick the united states, immigration. do you even know the facts about immigration law? our next guest is the author of several best selling books, including think, s for women. author and daughter of famous attorney gloria alred, lisa bloom. how are you, lisa? >> hi, shawn. thanks for the nice introduction. i'm great. >> pleasure to have you. let's talk about this. you hear immigration, it's being bandied about in the political process. why is it so important to have a basic understanding of immigration? >> well, you're right, shawn. we've heard so much information
9:22 am
election about immigration, and it drives me crazy as an attorney that some of it is accurate and some is not so accurate. provide a large amount of free legal information about immigration, so that people can find out what they're rights and responsibilities are. the first thing can do is go on the site and check out our free legal guides, our searchable content on a variety of legal topic areas, and free legal forms for immigration business, family law matters and many others. if that doesn't give you the information you need, i highly recommend you go on the site and you type in your question and within 24 hours several attorneys will answer that and give you legal advice for free. >> wow. >> on avv.com. you can't beat that, right? >> it's better than going to facebook, because everyone's probably wrong. >> right.
9:23 am
you hear a lot of things. what are the biggest misconceptions? >> well, i think one of the biggest ones is if somebody came here illegally, say they came on a temporary visa or brought here illegally by a family member, there is nothing they can do and they have to live in the shadows the rest of their lives. in many cases there is a path to legal citizenship. and i would recommend that you go on avvo. you can have a $39 consultation with an attorney, no behind fees, just 39 for 15 minute phone call with an immigration attorney who can assess your situation, tell you whether you can become legal. for example, if you have close family members who live here. if you have -- if you're a skilled worker within the meaning of the law. if you own a small business and you employ people. in many cases you can become legal. it's also important for employers to make sure that they comply with the law. i would recommend that $39 phone call for any small business owner to make sure that they're
9:24 am
regarding immigration, because if you don't, you can get hit with big fines and penalties. >> absolutely. how difficult is it to become a u.s. citizen or get a green fee? the wait can be almost a decade to become a citizen. >> right. it can be many years. and you know, you got to get the ball rolling. nobody is going to do the process for you. you have to take control of your situation. one of the things i love about avvo we made it easy and affordable for people to take control and become empowered their own situation. you know, you can go on for free and download the forms, look at the information, decide what you want to do. of course, any of the conversations that you have with the attorneys, that you find on avv.com are completely confidential. you don't have to worry about that. 97% of attorneys in the u.s. have profiles on avv.com. i have a present file, we all get rated by avvo. very proud of my ratings. look at the profiles and pick an
9:25 am
somebody who has a good rating, somebody who has a clean bar record, somebody who has good client reviews, you can look at what law school they went to. so it really evens the playing field between attorneys and clients. people used to be so intimidated by lawyers, but now we're putting the power in the hands of the people who are looking for lawyers. >> absolutely. it's a smart thing that you're talking to lawyers and not reading random form with people guessing. you don't want guesswork. we got 30 seconds left. one of your books think, straight talk for women who stay start in a dumped down world. tell us about the book and what inspired you to write it. >> this is about empowering women and girls. we get hit with so many negative message. we have tabloid media telling us we should be obsessed with celebrities. with humor and little bit of inspiration, i wrote the book and it became a "new york times" best seller, so i'm very pleased
9:26 am
>> congratulations on the success and thanks for the information today. >> thank you, shawn. have a good one. >> if you would like to learn more about immigration law today and for more information on the people and employers that you need to know or just head to the website avvo.com. if you go to avvo.com/citizenship you will get more information. event to tell you about. run for shelter in a good way. it's a special house and it's set for saturday. they're eighth annual 5k and one mile run walk begins at 8:15 in the morning at cornerstone park. all proceeds go back to the organization, which works to stop violence and abuse in the family environment. to register, run for the shelter, just head to

when i was one year old, i was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer on my spinal chord. but i spent my whole life fighting back. so you can imagine what i thought when i saw donald trump say... "i don't know what i said, ah, i don't remember!" "that reporter he is talking about suffers from a chronic condition that impairs movement of his arms." i don't want a president who makes fun of me.

it's the only time of year for seniors to make a change to their medicare benefits. open enrollment is just around the corner. >> here to offer helpful advice is dr. phillippe lam, a primary care provider for healthcare partners. it's great having you. >> thank you for having me. here again. and this is an important time for seniors. why is it so important? >> well, i just would like our viewers to know that medical enrollment -- i mean open enrollment period is the only time of the year where seniors have an opportunity to make changes to their medicare benefits. and so they must take advantage
9:30 am
and it starts on october 15th, and runs through december 7th of this year. >> it's a very important time of year because we want to make sure people are taking advantage of those benefits. what happens if people miss the december 7th deadline? >> well, if they don't make the changes that they want to their health medicare benefits, then they will have to wait and tire year to make the changes again. >> and that could end up costing them several hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the course of that year because of the care and the gap in coverage that they might have. >> correct. >> which is not a good thing, obviously. obviously if you're aging into medicare, let's say in june, you are able to pick and june. >> right. >> if you already have it now is the time to make sure that whatever you have is a good idea. tell us about the total care model that healthcare partners provides and why it's a great option for people that might be in that age group. >> well, our total care model is a great example of comprehensive
9:31 am
care. we're a team of dedicated medical professionals, working closely together to bring this comprehensive personalized care to each of our patients. and as our patient gets older, they require higher level of care, and model is designed to provide this increased support. >> so can our viewers enrolled in medicare can they enjoy any of the total care model a >> well, in order for them -- if they want to experience the total care model and the benefits it provides they must pick a health plan that would allow them to choose healthcare partners. now is the time to switch, to such a plan. >> when you're part of healthcare partners you don't have to pay extra to be part of the total care model. >> correct. >> that is the total care model. >> yes. >> how do people then take --
9:32 am
you send me to a specialist within healthcare partners. do i have to go over there and sign 15 forms over there to or am i -- they're all in the same game plan, aren't they? >> well, after the initial visit, you know, with a primary care provider, and then we'll make the -- you know, the referral that is needed, for each of our patients, so it's -- they only need to make that initial contact with our provider, and then we it up from there. >> we all had that nightmare where you go to the specialist and you have to wait for the doctor's office to fax over your records and they don't fax it and you have to call them three times to do it. that's not the case with healthcare partners because everyone within that network is on the same game plan. >> are they all on the same network and is everything covered. it sounds like at healthcare partners it's a total comprehensive experience, right? >> correct. >> a good place for people on medicare to be.
9:33 am
october 15th, december 7th when it cuts off. is there a certain -- obviously healthcare partners provides a place for us to go if we have any questions about the open enrollment process, correct? >> a huge where do we go? >> well, i would direct our viewers to the website provided below, and to learn more about the event that we're hosting right now, in our communities across the valley, and they can speak to one of our providers to get more information. and the services that we provide. and so time to do it. >> it's a pleasure. >> thank you, dr. lam. >> starts october 15th. it's time. it lasts through december 7th. they're hosting various events valley wide. if you want to learn more, head to the website on your screen for one near you. here at 13 "action news" we want all kids in las vegas to be

welcome back. there's nothing quite like the look and feel of brand-new carpet. if yours is looking ratty, there is somewhere and tear here. home depot can help you take that first step to brand-new carpet. >> from measuring to padding to
9:37 am
to help us out. good morning, chuck. >> good morning. thank you. >> so first of all, we have to choose a carpet. tell me about some of the main choices we have. >> one of the biggest things is you need to determine where it's going to go and what kind of wear you have, what's in the home, you have a lot of pet, you have a lot of foot traffic, going to be on the stairs, going to be in an entry area. these are things you want to consider when you choose a type of carpet. >> so how about the latest technology in carpet? i know i have -- when i my house, like they asked what kind of carpet i wanted. what's the best? >> we have here life proof carpet. there is 40 different styles and over 800 different colors. and it's got built in stain features, and being if you go with the home depot we can start with the free in-home consultation. we'll look at the area that you want to cover. we'll look at what you're expecting from the carpet.
9:38 am
we got loop carpet. and we have textured carpet. they're going to have different features and benefits but they're all going to be in the life proof, which is a hybrid of carpet. and there are a lot of different price points, starts from as low as $1.98 a square foot to up to $5. depending on your price point that you're looking for. >> you want to go up to the level of berber. this is why i like when home depot comes in and sponsors t segment and slow off stuff, because i think we get intimidated, we're like they're going to -- just keep -- not the case. shouldn't be intimidated at all. >> like i said we'll do a free in-home consultation. we'll bring samples out. we'll show you the different colors and different textures that are available. and like you said, it's going to be in a comfortable, cool environment where you can go and feel free to ask as many questions as you want. then when you do make your selection, we'll take care of everything. the furniture move, the prep, the tear out, we'll send a
9:39 am
they'll do the installation from top to bottom. we'll wrap it all up. >> this is when it gets scary, the furniture move, how are they going to do this? >> we'll take care of that for you. >> it's good to do on a weekend when you're going away, too. we had home depot come to our house, my husband and i, and do carpet in our walk in closet, and it was funny because my husband will find me in there taking naps. >> the padding? >> i love to lang out in there, it's like dogs love it, as well. can we talk about padding? you were talking about soundproofing. >> padding under that carpet is incredibly important. >> depending on what you're expecting from the carpet, we have the basic six or eight-pound carpet all the way up to top of the line. and again, it's what you are looking for the carpet to give you and you have to start with a good foundation. >> of course. and padding not only provides obviously more cushion but it also blocks more noise
9:40 am
>> it does. extend the life of the carpet. if you get a good carpet, you don't want to put a budget padding underneath it. it's going to adversely affect the carpet. >> there are pictures to take a look at. let's take a look at some of th. is this something that you would suggest we do at home? could we do it ourself? i know that's the mantra at home depot. >> what you just showed was carpet squares and you can put down the carpet squares yourself. they're a lot easier to install than the carpet generally in a 12 or 15-foot roll. it is better to have a professional do that. we have licensed professionals. >> they can lug that up the stairs. >> they are going to move the furniture, stair out your old carpet and get the new carpet installed in one dayen you're house will be back to normal. >> what about design? one of the big choices, of course, is like color. and also pile. but can i bring one of these home? >> absolutely. we have several samples to choose from.
9:41 am
and you got the looped carpet. and you got the textured carpet. and they all have different recommendations for the type of application that you using them for. the traffic pattern, the number of people in the home, like i said if you have a number of pets in the home. there is going to be something that we will discuss with you during the selection process. >> awesome. very cool. i know we have a couple pictures to look at. you can get to any home depot location and get help. which one at you at? >> the one in henderson sunset, across from sunset station. the galleria mall. >> i would like to point out your apron. it's so nice and put together. >> thank you. >> when you see him in the store, that's the working apron. that one is -- that has seen its days. two more pictures. and -- oh, okay. this is -- >> what? >> i don't know why anyone would do that. it's a waste of good ice cream.
9:42 am
on a carpet like this. >> it has built in stain proof technology. and when you get into that level of carpet, that's what you're expecting it's going to be an easy clean up. accidents do happen. >> accidents happen. >> yes. absolutely. chuck, it's great having you. >> thank you very much. >> pleasure. >> if you're ready to step up the carpet in your home, let the professionals at home depot help. call the number on your screen or visit their website. home depot.com. to learn more about your options. >> i'm rubbing this one, ts the one i want in my house. i like the texture. do you know someone who truly makes a difference? recognize them with our "give back" award. >> head to vegasmorningblend.com, click on the give back and fill out the form. one lucky person will receive $500 from america first credit union. they're a proud sponsor of the reward with "the morning blend." stay with us.

9:48 am
this is a sleep sensor that goes between the mattress and the sheet, as we. and what's interesting about this they have a specialty program for seniors in case you're monitoring a senior's evening of sleep, want to make sure they're okay. the pillow is quite fascinating. this has microphones inside the pillow itself. and one of the things it does it listens for snoring, and it will vibrate in order to tell people to switch positions. hopefully in order to lower their level of snoring. and finally, i have by metro naps the energy pod. this is amazing device. you might see it in your place of employment. if you're employers interested in doing nap rooms or allowing people to take a quick nap during the day, this has headphones, and a specialty audio track from a company called faziz. they do really interesting work in helping people go to sleep, as well as waking up feeling energized in the morning.
9:49 am
of learning more about how are you sleeping, what is your prototype, are you an early bird or night owl and how to leverage that. >> that's fantastic. i'm so a paced by that snores sensing pillow. that -- right now i'm the snore sensing pillow or my wife is, whoever falls to sleep first. we shove the other one to get them to stop snoring. where do we get more informatn? information about the sleep technology summit go to schlep foundation.org and if you want to learn more about my book go to the power of when.com. >> and we'll learn more about you at the sleep doctor.com. achieve successful zs with the help of new innovative technology. if you want more from the sleep doctor head to the sleep doctor.com. he's also on facebook. j.j., over to you. thanks for making us sleepy.
