paul ryan said he was "sickened." former secretary of state condoleezza rice writing, "enough! donald trump should not be president." and from vice president joe biden, this blunt statement. "it's not lewd. it's sexual assault." perhaps the most extraordinary reaction coming from trump's own running mate, mike pence. friday, he defended trump. >> invariably, they'll say, this time we got him. then they turn on the television the next morning, and donald trump is still standing stronger fighting for the american people. >> reporter: but the next morning, pence himself releasing a statement saying he was "offended by the words and actions described by donald trump." adding, "i do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them." pence cancelled a campaign appearance, refused to take questions from reporters. >> should donald trump withdraw as a nominee? >> reporter: and said he would be watching to see what his running mate says tonight. standing by trump, his wife melania.

melania trump now saying, "the words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive to me. i hope people will accept his apology, as i have." the fear, there's more out there, more damaging examples of trump objectifying women. cnn unearthing these comments he made about his own daughter, ivanka, in interviews with howard stern. >> did your daughter get breast implants? >> no. >> no. you mean that? >> no. no, she didn't, i mean i would know if she did, the answer is no, why, did she look a little more stacked? >> she looks more vopt than ever. >> she's actually always been very voluptuous. >> reporter: and there are other examples. >> my daughter is beautiful, ivanka, she -- >> by the way, your daughter -- >> she's beautiful. >> can i say this? a piece of [ bleep ]. >> yeah. >> reporter: this morning trump and melania spotted outside trump tower, ducking into their suv in the rain. and tonight, his campaign tweeting this grainy image. trump on the debate stage, preparing for the biggest test of his life. sitting down, but likely far from comfortable.

from that town hall debate hall. tom, donald trump in st. louis, we saw the pictures a moment ago. he's been tweeting about bill clinton's past all day today. we learned late today that bill and chelsea clinton will be in that room. what are you learning tonight, tom? will trump go there? >> reporter: there was clear division within the campaign on whether donald trump should go there. on friday, saturday, he went there, and today on twitter he went there. there's nothing that leads me to believe tonight, he will not go there. >> tom, our thanks to you. and the big question, as tom just reported, will donald trump try to turn the focus after his own words were uncovered to bill clinton's scandals? keep in mind, this is a different format. donald trump and hillary clinton will be in a town hall with american voters asking some of the questions. any attacks will play out with all of those voters sitting close by in the room. the moderators, our own martha raddatz and cnn's anderson cooper. that new videotape will come up in tonight's debate.

whether trump will try to turn the attention from him to bill and hillary clinton. >> reporter: just over a minute into his video apology, donald trump made his threat. >> i have said some foolish things. bill clinton has actually abused women and hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims. we will discuss this more in the coming days. >> reporter: the question now, will trump actually go there tonight, when he's face to face with hillary clinton? it's quite a turn for recently released pictures show trump and clinton in chummier times. listen to what he said in 1998. >> they made watergate out of what should have been nothing. and during the height of the monica lewinsky scandal, trump attacked clinton's republican investigators.

1998. trump then defended bill clinton. >> i don't necessarily agree with his victims. the victims are terrible. he is really a victim himself. but he put himself in that position. >> reporter: he even attacked the women involved. >> the whole group. paula jones, lewinsky. it's just a really unattractive group. i'm not just talking about physical. >> reporter: trump was asked if it would be different if they were supermodels. >> i think at least it would be more pleasant to watch. >> reporter: trump says he held back in that first debate. >> i was going to say something extremely rough to hillary, to her family, and i said to myself, i can't do it. i just can't do it. >> reporter: tonight, a huge clue, as trump surrounds himself with women who have accused bill clinton of impropriety. >> more than 80 million were watching donald trump when he said that during the first debate. jon, it's still unclear if donald trump will bring up bill clinton, and whether it is a strategy that could backfire.

because of chelsea? >> reporter: he called chelsea a wonderful young lady, and said i didn't want to say what i was going to say with chelsea in the room, and as you noted, chelsea will be in the room tonight. and because it's the town hall debate, there will be 40 uncommitted voters sitting right there in close proximity. >> jon, we'll see you in primetime. and hillary clinton said she will respond for the first time to t b and her campaign says this town hall format is one she welcomes. cecilia vega on the clinton strategy tonight. >> reporter: hillary clinton, ignoring questions today as she boarded her plane bound for st. louis. >> should donald trump drop out of the race? >> reporter: her campaign calling donald trump's caught on camera statements "horrific." but so far, from clinton herself, silence. aides tell abc news clinton is waiting to take trump on under the bright lights of that debate

she spent all day yesterday behind closed doors honing her attacks. "snl" going there, imagining clinton celebrating trump's crisis. ? and practicing her game face. >> since mr. trump's comments were so bad -- >> oh, so bad. just horrible, horrible. >> do you think he should drop out? >> no, no. give him a shot. >> reporter: but tonight, clinton could confront a new controversy of her own. hackers releasing purported excerpts of her paid speeches to big banks. clinton saying, when it comes to policy, quote, "you need both a public and private position." in another speech, clinton appears to contradict her own public stance on the hot button issue of trade, saying, "my dream is a hemispheric common market, with open trade and open borders." her campaign won't say whether the documents are real. >> is this document, then, is it accurate? did she tell brazilian bankers that her dream -- >> i have no way of knowing

hurricane matthew's trail of destruction, its effects felt all the way to new england tonight. the eye did finally come ashore this weekend. the historic and deadly flooding, 100 miles inland. this road in fayetteville, north carolina washed away. the damage now staggering. matt gutman in north carolina tonight. >> reporter: matthew's final punch bashing the coast with a last dose of wind, rain, and fire. this house engulfed in hatteras. the rain swamping faye 14 inches there, a third of its average annual rain falling in hours. >> our state is facing major destruction and, sadly, loss of life. >> reporter: the storm has claimed at least 20 lives. and in north carolina, over 1,000 water rescues. the water carving a canyon into this road. this woman's car submerged. as rescuers approach, notice that bundle under her arm? >> oh, come on, sweetie.

in so many parts of north carolina, it's the rain that created that flooding. but here along the coastal communities, it's that wind pushing that storm surge onto land creating a water world in every direction. millions without power across the south. the howling storm blowing transformers and ripping down power lines in a flood-battered charleston, south carolina. in florida, they're still assessing the damage after matthew raked past it. >> reporter: the waves were so big, they came crashing up and over this nine-foot storm wall. pushing these boulders all through this neighborhood. the road here behind me, completely gone. >> and now the water is just over. >> reporter: back here in nags head, we met blake smith -- >> it's a good three inches above the baseboard here. >> reporter: we accompanied him to salvage what's left of his home for his wife and two toddlers. >> i feel like i can't collect my thoughts, like my mind is racing. >> just incredible destruction. matt joins us live.

the financial toll? >> reporter: it's estimated they could top $6 billion, and it could take parts of north carolina a long time to recover. the ground here has been saturated for a long time even before the storm. it hasn't rained here in 12 hours, and still all of this flood water remains. david? >> matt, thanks so much. rob marciano, tracking the hurricane from the very beginning. he's in boston tonight, where the aftereffects are still being felt. rob? >> reporter: the headlines for hurricane matthew were in the southeast, but the effects felt all the way up into new england. take a look at some of these numbers. the winds still near 60 in norfolk. near 50 in nantucket. and the rainfall, the northern tail of the storm, devastating inland flooding with over a foot of rain. this all has to drain down those waterways.

the good news, dry air for everybody the next few days who were impacted by hurricane matthew. >> rob, thanks. next to california, where two police officers responding to a domestic dispute were shot and killed. one, just weeks from retiring, the other, a new mom just back from maternity leave. adrienne bankert on the deadly standoff. >> reporter: tonight, a community and police depar >> i am awake in a nightmare right now. >> reporter: palm springs police responding to a domestic disturbance call saturday afternoon. negotiating with 26-year-old john felix inside his mother's home. minutes later, three officers are shot. two killed. 63-year-old jose gil vega, a 35-year veteran of the force and 27-year-old lesley zerebny, just back from maternity leave. she leaves behind a 4-month-old
