? switching gears, now, to the new criminal investigation into wells fargo and the bank's alleged predatory targeting of minorities who speak little english, college students and seniors. >> you have former employees breaking their silence of what they were forced to do, allegedly, to keep their jobs. here's abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: the criminal investigation against wells fargo, filed in california, comes in the wake of accusations that employees were pressured to sign up roughly 2 million customers for programs without their knowledge. former employees are speaking out. telling "the new york times" they were encouraged to prey on people who spoke little english, college students and the elderly. kevin pham, said it was like lions hunting zebras. >> you had to open ten accounts every day.

former ceo was chastised on capitol hill. senator elizabeth warren accused him of gutless leadership. >> you should resign. this isn't right. >> reporter: since then, the bank has hired a new ceo. paid customers back $2.6 million, was ordered to pay $190 million in fines and says, it has ended all product sales goals. the bank is now rated a c-minus and has lost its accreditation with the better business bureau. in a statement to abc news, wells fargo said its number one priority is to make things right with its customers and restore public trust. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> the ceo walked away with $130 million worth of wells fargo stock. he was on the target board at one point. he resigned from that. and he stepped down from the federal reserve bank of san francisco. he was well-connected.

annual charity dinner in manhattan. trump and clinton both made remarks about each other, and an event that's known for its laughs this year was a little awkward. we'll get the latest from karen travers. >> reporter: the charity event, one day after trading insults in their final debate, hillary clinton and donald trump put on their smily faces. trump drew boos for some of his remarks at clinton's expense. >> here she is tonight, in public, pretending not to hate cath will i licks. >> donald looks at the statue of liberty and sees a four. maybe a five if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair. >> clinton and trump did shake hands after refusing to do so at their last two debates. it was a sharp contrast to their caustic exchanges wednesday night. >> such a nasty woman. >> i think he's unfit and he proves it -- >> no, you are the one that's

trump will get a few laughs last night with some self-deprecating votes. one of his best received lines was at his wife's expense. a light hearted not about her convention speech. >> michelle obama gives a speech and everyone loves it. it's fantastic. they think she's absolutely great. my wife, melania, gives the exact same speech. and people get on her case. and i don't get it. i don't know why. and it wasn't her fault. stand up, melania a. >> trump even said i'm in trouble when i get home. melania took it along, took it all in stride. even standing and waving at the crowd as he asked to do so.

and european leaders meeting brussels this morning strongly condemned military action in syria, but stopped short of threatening sanctions. russia has agreed to a pause of air strikes, so civilians can leave and medical evacuations can begin. but european leaders are calling for a lasting cease-fire. and they're ready to consider all available options if the atrocities continue. adding to syria's troubles, isis fighters being forced out of mosul are crossing the border into syria. pro-syria analysts point out that the arrival of thousands of isis militants produces new dangers for militant forces. and they're accusing western countries of using the mosul operation of influencing the war in syria. the u.s. has its first combat casualty in its campaign to retake mosul. a roadside bomb exploded north of the city, killing an american soldier. those ieds are one of the tactics isis are using to defend its strong hold. alex marquardt is on the front lines. >> reporter: an isis suicide

advancing forces. rocket finally taking it out. then, that second car bomb. the u.s.-backed kurdish forces, making the direct hit. suicide bombers have been the go-to tactic of isis. dozens deployed. and possibly a new weapon. drones. some armed with explosives. kurdish forces spraying the sky and bringing one of them down. some of the fiercest fighting yet. u.s. soldiers, assisting from the air and advising on the ground, mourning one of their own. that american service member killed by an ied. the commander of the u.s.-led coalition, telling the bbc isis will likely use human shields. >> they are very resilient and challenging folk. they're very adaptable, very creative, cunning

of that. >> reporter: we're learning that this battle is playing out online, as well. learning isis is part of the coalition saying cyber warfare is now being used against isis for the first time in this campaign. alex marquardt, irbil, iraq. a hearing for the former nsa contractor. accused in a scheme prosecutors call breath taking. harold martin iii stole a trove of top secret data, larger than the amount edward snowden has taken. martin allegedly gathered the material over two decades. but the court papers don't say whether martin shared the information with another country. the justice department says it likely will charge martin with espionage. another death being blamed on a defective takata air bag. the death of a woman in southern california brings the total to 11. she was driving a 2001 honda civic which had been recalled. but the repair had never made. the inflaters in the defective air bags can rupture, spewing

the older inflaters, the more likely they are to malfunction. and officials at los angeles international airport investigating this morning the cause of a mysterious odor on a flight from atlanta. more than a dozen passengers reported feeling sick after smelling what they described as a sweet odor. health officials greeted the plane upon arrival at l.a.x. none of the passengers requested medical attention. the new york giants are considering kicker josh brown's future with the club amid new details about his domestic violence case. the nfl is reopening an investigation after washington state police released journal entries and e-mails that showed josh brown admitted to physically verbally abusing his former wife. the nfl suspended him for one game in august after its initial investigation in the case. the giants play sunday in london but brown will not be with them. one more win and chicago fans can party like it's 1945. that's the last time the cubbies appeared in a world series. chicago knocked off los angeles 8-4 in gave game five of the national league series last
