and european leaders meeting brussels this morning strongly condemned military action in syria, but stopped short of threatening sanctions. russia has agreed to a pause of air strikes, so civilians can leave and medical evacuations can begin. but european leaders are calling for a lasting cease-fire. and they're ready to consider all available options if the atrocities continue. adding to syria's troubles, isis fighters being forced out of mosul are crossing the border into syria. pro-syria analysts point out that the arrival of thousands of isis militants produces new dangers for militant forces. and they're accusing western countries of using the mosul operation of influencing the war in syria. the u.s. has its first combat casualty in its campaign to retake mosul. a roadside bomb exploded north of the city, killing an american soldier. those ieds are one of the tactics isis are using to defend its strong hold. alex marquardt is on the front lines. >> reporter: an isis suicide

the older inflaters, the more likely they are to malfunction. and officials at los angeles international airport investigating this morning the cause of a mysterious odor on a flight from atlanta. more than a dozen passengers reported feeling sick after smelling what they described as a sweet odor. health officials greeted the plane upon arrival at l.a.x. none of the passengers requested medical attention. the new york giants are considering kicker josh brown's future with the club amid new details about his domestic violence case. the nfl is reopening an investigation after washington state police released journal entries and e-mails that showed josh brown admitted to physically verbally abusing his former wife. the nfl suspended him for one game in august after its initial investigation in the case. the giants play sunday in london but brown will not be with them. one more win and chicago fans can party like it's 1945. that's the last time the cubbies appeared in a world series. chicago knocked off los angeles 8-4 in gave game five of the national league series last

>> and they traditionally delivered a light hearted roost. but this year, things got a little too political. and at some point, the crowd even booed. >> they did. at times, polite smiles vanished, as candidates look at explosive topics. it's supposed to be an event with self-deprecating speeches. and donald trump and hillary clinton were deprecating, but at each other's expense. >> but donald is as healthy as a horse. you know, the one that vladimir putin rides around on. >> i called hillary a nasty woman. after listening to hillary rattle on, and on and on. i don't think so badly of rosie o'donnell anymore. >> reporter: every four years, the al smith charity dinner brings together the presidential candidates for some levity. >> nice to finally relax and to wear what ann and i wear around the house. >> i felt really well-rested

in the first debate. >> reporter: but from the very start, it was clear, this year's duo was different. with only the archbishop of new york separating them, there was no handshake and little to no small talk. even when the cardinal wasn't sitting there. trump, speaking first, gets off a couple laughs at his own expense. >> some people think this would be tough for me. but the truth is -- it's true. the truth is, i'm actually a modest person. very modest. it's true. in fact, many people tell me that modesty is, perhaps, my best quality. >> reporter: but then, unleashes a barrage of attacks, sounding more like a trump speech. >> hillary is so corrupt, she got kicked off the watergate commission.

stamina. that is 4 1/2 hours. i have now stood next to donald trump longer than any of his campaign managers. >> reporter: some of her attacks, also receiving a smattering of boos. >> donald looks at the statue of liberty and sees a four. maybe a five, if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair. while they may not have made peace with each other, they did eventually shake hands. but the cardinal mentioned afterwards that it was so icy being between the two of them during that. >> i would not want that seat. the clinton campaign is enjoying a little windfall before election day. the clinton's pro pact had its best month, raising $25 million in september.

from a single donor. a billionaire investor in florida. the clinton campaign spent about $83 million last month. while the trump camp shelled out $70 million. we learned the names of those two americans killed this week. sergeant dunk rhiny, of fairview, illinois, was visiting that base when he was shot and killed by a lone gunman. the other man has been identified as michael sauro of oklahoma. he was working with the u.s. army. an american civilian working for iraqi forces was killed by a roadside bomb. the first u.s. casualty since the operation started. the pentagon has warned all along that special apps troops could be killed or injured. and they say roadside bombs or ieds pose a special danger because isis fighters have had plenty of time to plant them. >> there's days when we're going to impose our will. and there's days the enemy gets a vote. he's going to come out on top. this is a big operation.

that isis fighters are claiming they stormed a government compound in the northern city of kirkuk. and witnesses report hearing heavy gunfire and explosions from two police compounds. local officials are denying that any government buildings have been seized. and the advance on mosul is creating another problem. the united nations predicts as many as 100,000 people will flee mosul, seeking refuge in syria. aid groups warn that that could overwhelm camps there. the environment department is b reaction to the flint water crisis. a watchdog's interim report shows they had the ability to intervene seven months before it actually declared an emergency. the drinking water was tainted by lead after it changed providers. the e.p.a. stepped in as soon as they realized the city and state were failing to address the problem. washington, d.c. transit police are facing accusations of

arrest of a teen caught eating in the subway. it was posted online by a member of black lives matter. the 18-year-old woman was stopped with an open bag of chips and a lollipop. open food and drink are not allowed in d.c. subways. she refuses to sit down and has one of her legs kicked out from under her. the case is under investigation this morning. an insurance company has done what the red baron couldn't. metlife has shot down snoopy. the 148-year-old company is mostlyet life insurance business, it figures it no longer needs the warm, fuzzy, peanuts cartoon character. >> after 31 years, the dog house flying beagle, good old charlie brown and the others are being cut loose. not only will the pictures appear on blimps. but metlife is getting rid of the blimps entirely. no more metlife blimp. >> that's sad, isn't it?

after catching her postal carrier on camera, dumping bins of mail into a ditch. here's steve osunsami. >> reporter: families couldn't explain it. from time to time, it felt like their mail wasn't being delivered. they were less than happy when they found out about this. a neighbor with her cell phone handy, was able to record this postal worker, pouring the neighbor's mail down a ditch. >> he stopped and took a break like he and continued to toss mail. he eventually just drove off like it was normal. >> reporter: the post office came to get it all. some 20 bins worth of pay checks and bank statements with sensitive information, to be delivered after the investigation is over. >> how many rogue post office guys do we have? >> reporter: this isn't the first time a letter carrier has tossed the mail. a postal worker seen here was fired in august. another refusing to do the job in cincinnati. putting it right in the trash.
