investigations during an election cycle. and experts are warning that central italy could be hit by more powerful earthquakes after a 6.6 quake struck over the weekend. it was the third major one to hit in just the past two months. abc's jennifer eccleston is there. >> reporter: a 6.6 magnitude tremor caused widespread destruction. this drone video showing crumbled buildings in the town of amatrice in central italy, the same town already hit by a deadly earthquake in august. the new tremors causing even more damage. panicked residents ran to safety, embracing, kneeling, praying in the central plazas. fears rising with each aftershock as more buildings disappear in a cloud of dust. firefighters helped cloistered nuns to safety, their church destroyed, the bell tower on the point of collapse. one nun describing what she felt

and those shiite fighters are now participating in the fight against isis and receiving help from iranian military advisers. iraqi forces advancing toward mosul from the east have closed to within four miles of the edge of the city. advances continue to be slower from the south, where government forces are still 20 miles from mosul. the fight is expected to continue for weeks at least. thousands of people are spending the overnight hours in shelters or hotels following another powerful earthquake in central italy. it was a third strong quake in just the past two months. but the italian prime minister is vowing to rebuild. abc's jennifer eccleston is in the quake zone. >> reporter: the powerful quake causing buildings in central italy to collapse in seconds. the power of the 6.6 magnitude tremor the strongest in nearly 40 years. the third major rumble in just one week sending terrified residents running into the streets again. in norcia near the epicenter nuns carried to safety, the dust clearing to reveal the historic 14th century basilica in ruins. reports of at least 20 injured. it's just after back-to-back quakes hit the same region. nearby amatrice rocked again two

killed nearly 300. the view from above showing a town already utterly devastated reduced to ruins. the faces ripped off home after home. >> there's no reason to think it's now suddenly magically going to stop. they're going to be continuing to have aftershocks. some of them are going to be bigger. >> reporter: miraculously, no one was killed in this latest que through the area. a population on edge and on the move. thousands are now homeless and temporary camps are full. with temperatures dropping and fears of more quakes rising it's going to be a long and tense winter. jennifer eccleston, abc news, rome. nearly two dozen spectators were injured after yesterday's nascar race at the martinsville speedway. a chevy convertible reportedly tried to cut into the line leaving the handicapped parking lot. that hit another vehicle and then ran into a crowd of

none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening. the chevy's driver was detained for questioning. and investigators now know what happened to cause this american airlines jet to catch fire, but not why. the american airlines flight was about to leave chicago for miami when an engine failed, spewing pieces for thousands of feet and setting fuel on fire. passengers even ran for their lives but luckily no major injured. >> amazing there you when you see those pictures. we have some more pictures to show you. surveillance video from outside a walmart about m of washington is puzzling police there. it appears to show an abduction outside the store. two men get out of a car and put a third person into its trunk against his or her will. but witnesses say the three appeared to be, quote, play fighting. earlier at least in the day. now, police are trying to figure out if a crime was committed or if the three were just goofing around. >> it's a harsh prank, stuffing someone in a trunk. >> with friends like that.

[ scream ] >> reporter: fast forward a few years, and the museum was born. shining a new light on some dark subject matter.

e-mails potentially connected to secretary clinton's private server. >> we both encouraged him to make sure that the american people have as much information as possible before they have to make a decision on november 8th. >> reporter: the case was reignited by an investigation of an alleged sexting scandal involving anthony weiner. the fbi confiscated weiner's devices, including a laptop where sources say they discovered e-mails from abedin. those sources acknowledge the fbi doesn't know what's on those e-mails or whether they will the focus, whether those e-mails contain classified information and are tied to clinton's private server. the fbi's obtained a court order allowing them to study abedin's e-mails. justice department officials had advised against alerting congress, citing department tradition of not talking about ongoing investigations and not doing anything that would be seen as influencing an election in its final days.

extraordinary independence, and matters were complicated after the attorney general's ill-fated meeting this summer with bill clinton on that tarmac in arizona. it apparently took weeks for the revelation to be brought to the fbi director. there are questions about why it took so long. a source tells abc news figuring out what to do was complicated and it was back and forth over how to handle the situation. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. >> pierre, thank you. we have breaking news now from oklahoma. a murder suspect on the run for more than a week has been shot dead. michael vance was wanted in the murders of his aunt and uncle and for shooting two police officers with an ak-47. he was killed in a shootout with police in western oklahoma. vance was spotted earlier in the day by a farmer who reported it to police when law enforcement responded vance shot a sheriff's deputy, but that sheriff's deputy is expected to be okay. we're going to turn our focus overseas now and to italy

lost their homes after a third and powerful earthquake struck the central part of that country. the sunday morning quake was a 6.6. it destroyed centuries-old buildings and in one area in particular sent monks and nuns running for safety. no one was killed in sunday's earthquake. an italian seismologist says that more significant quakes can be expected in that region. now to a major new development in the battle to retake the iraqi city of mosul from isis. thousands of fighters have reinforced shiite militias in an effort to cut off the terror group's forces near the city. some 15,000 shiites are now in the battle. they're receiving help from iranian military advisers as well. and just after those reinforcements were announced a series of explosions rocked shiite neighborhoods in baghdad. five blasts killed at least 17 people and wounded dozens of others. it's believed the blasts were in response to the shiite fighters joining the battle. also the first church service was held in the recently liberated largest christian town in northern iraq. the town fell to isis two years

there is still fighting in the town's outskirts, but community leaders say they will rebuild that church completely. we move on now to that huge scare for travelers in this country. an american airlines jet bursting into flames as it was about to take off from chicago. investigators still have no idea why the jet's engine failed and shot pieces thousands of feet away. abc's eva pilgrim has more. >> reporter: a packed jet erupting in flames, stirring panic on board just seconds before takeoff. federal investigators revealing soth this boeing 767 broke apart. >> examination of the engine has revealed that the stage 2 disks of the high-pressure turbine failed. >> reporter: the miami-bound flight on the runway. >> jump and slide. >> reporter: when hot debris from the engine sparked that massive fire. >> this engine disintegrated. hot metal penetrates the gas

fuel-fed fire. >> reporter: the right side of the plane going up in flames. >> everybody's coming towards the left side of the plane where i was. so everybody's pushing us and screaming. >> reporter: the debris flying in every direction. one piece found roughly 1600 feet north of the plane. another in a warehouse almost 3,000 feet south. somehow none of the debris sliced into the cabin, packed with 161 people. >> i ran out into the runway, into the grass area. seeing the plane in flames. and i thought it was going to explode. >> reporter: 20 people taken to hospitals with minor injuries. all ha b >> it's a very dangerous kind of mishap, and we're very lucky that this happened while it was still on the ground. >> reporter: the plane has been moved. the runway is back open again. investigators are trying to figure out why that disk broke. they're looking at the plane's maintenance records and analyzing those pieces of debris that they were able to find. eva pilgrim, abc news, chicago. nearly two dozen racing fans

at martinsville speedway. it happened not during the race but afterward in the handicapped parking lot. a chevrolet convertible tried to pass a jeep in line to leaving the parking lot, and instead went into a crowd of pedestrians. nine people were taken to the hospital, but none of the injuries we're told appear to be life-threatening. and jury selection begins today in the case of the former police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black man. video of the shooting of walter scott in charleston, south carolina shocked the country, but michael slager's attorney contends there was a lot more to that incident than what appeared on the video including a fight between the pair and a struggle over the officer's taser. look at a dangerous attack at the new orleans airport from last year. this video shows a man approaching, then spraying officers with what was wasp spray. he then whips out a machete. passengers were running for their lives, as you saw there. that attacker was shot by officers and later died of his injuries. the donations are pouring in to fund the protest against the pipeline in north dakota. crowdsourcing has provided more than $1 million to help a few dozen people camping out in

>> does this new investigation change at all how you would have voted? >> if i knew what it was about, it would have, it possibly would have. >> reporter: on the trail clinton eager to change the narrative. >> there's a lot of noise and distraction, but it really comes down to what kind of future we want. >> reporter: and clinton is getting some backup from top senate democrats demanding that comey release more information on this new review by today. in a scathing letter senate democratic leader harry reid is accusing comey of trying to influence the election. mary bruce, abc news, miami. >> she's getting a lot of support as well elsewhere. dozens of other former federal prosecutors have signed a letter criticizing the fbi director's decision to alert congress about those e-mails. and eric holder went even further, posting an op-ed in the "washington post." he called james comey a good man of integrity and honor. but he said good men make mistakes. holder said comey violated long-standing justice department policies and tradition on the proper way to conduct investigations during an election cycle.

central italy could be hit by more powerful earthquakes after a 6.6 quake struck over the weekend. it was the third major one to hit in just the past two months. abc's jennifer eccleston is there. >> reporter: a 6.6 magnitude tremor caused widespread destruction. this drone video showing crumbled buildings in the town of amatrice in central italy, the same town already hit by a deadly earthquake in august. the new tremors causing even more damage. panicked residents ran to safety, embracing, kneeling, praying in the central plazas. fears rising with each aftershock as more buildings disappear in a cloud of dust. firefighters helped cloistered nuns to safety, their church destroyed, the bell tower on the point of collapse. one nun describing what she felt saying -- >> "[ speaking foreign language ]. >> reporter: "there was this end of world feeling. you just can't say a tremor. it was more than that.

the earthquake was the strongest in italy in 36 years, hitting a mountain area just north of rome. pope francis mentioned the quake in his weekly sunday blessing, saying -- >> [ speaking foreign language ]. >> reporter: "i pray for the injured and for the families who have suffered damage." italy's prime minister promised help, telling reporters that -- >> [ speaking foreign language ]. >> reporter: "we will rebuil churches, and the businesses." that might take a long time. with thousands of people left without a roof over their heads and churches lying in a heap of rubble. jennifer eccleston, abc news, italy. back here at home, today of course is a huge day for fans of sweets. >> so let's get a look at that halloween forecast to see how those trick-or-treaters will fare. over in the western states they may need to bundle up a little. apparent storms will bring rain,

>> former attorney general eric holder has signed a letter along with ex-federal prosecutors from both parties condemning comey's decision. more now from abc's richard cantu. >> reporter: the fbi has obtained a warrant to review e-mails found on the laptop of hillary clinton's top aide, huma abedin, and her estranged husband anthony weiner. federal agents first discovered the e-mails potentially relating to hillary clinton weeks ago but didn't inform fbi director james comey until last thursday. the next day in a letter to lawmakers he revealed the renewed inquiry that has thrown the campaign for a loop. hillary clinton, now fighting donald trump. >> i mean, he's such a downer, right? >> reporter: and james comey. >> it's pretty strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election. >> reporter: justice department officials had advised against alerting congress, citing department tradition of not

anything that would be seen as influencing an election in its final days. for donald trump it's a late-game windfall. >> yet now it's reported that the department of justice is fighting the fbi. that's because the department of justice is trying so hard to protect hillary clinton. >> reporter: comey now caught in the crossfire. >> i think this was a terrible error in judgment by the director. >> reporter: in a scathing letter senate minority leader harry reid accuses the fbi director of being partisan and says he may have broken the law. comey has begun briefing lawmakers on the new e-mails. meanwhile, the latest abc news national tracking poll shows hillary clinton's lead over donald trump down to one point. richard cantu, abc news, new york. and as you saw there, trump is continuing to hammer clinton over the fbi review every chance he gets. he actually mockingly thanked anthony weiner at a rally yesterday and he's now touting the latest polls after

being rigged against him. >> they have been amazing. even before the big blowup on friday, we're leading in many of the polls. we're leading in national polls. we're leading in ohio. we're leading in iowa. and by the way, we're leading in florida. >> well, trump is campaigning in michigan today while mike pence heads to florida, insisting he won't be knocked off course. clinton is attending to early and tim kaine will be in north carolina. isis is calling a wave of new violence in iraq retaliation. a series of explosions yesterday rocked shiite neighborhoods in baghdad. at least 17 people were killed. dozens more were injured. it's believed the blasts were the terror group's response to thousands of shiite fighters joining the battle near the city of mosul. and those shiite fighters are now participating in the fight against isis and receiving help

iraqi forces advancing toward mosul from the east have closed to within four miles of the edge of the city. advances continue to be slower from the south, where government forces are still 20 miles from mosul. the fight is expected to continue for weeks at least. thousands of people are spending the overnight hours in shelters or hotels following another powerful earthquake in central italy. it was a third strong quake in just the past two months. but the italian prime minister is vowing to rebuild. abc's jennifer eccleston is in the quake zone. >> reporter: the powerful quake causing buildings in central italy to collapse in seconds. the power of the 6.6 magnitude tremor the strongest in nearly 40 years. the third major rumble in just one week sending terrified residents running into the streets again. in norcia near the epicenter nuns carried to safety, the dust clearing to reveal the historic 14th century basilica in ruins. reports of at least 20 injured. it's just after back-to-back quakes hit the same region.

months since deadly tremors killed nearly 300. the view from above showing a town already utterly devastated reduced to ruins. the faces ripped off home after home. >> there's no reason to think it's now suddenly magically going to stop. they're going to be continuing to have aftershocks. some of them are going to be bigger. >> reporter: miraculously, no one was killed in this latest quake but aftershocks roll through the area. a population on edge and on th move. thousands are now homeless and temporary camps are full. with temperatures dropping and fears of more quakes rising it's going to be a long and tense winter. jennifer eccleston, abc news, rome. nearly two dozen spectators were injured after yesterday's speedway. a chevy convertible reportedly tried to cut into the line leaving the handicapped parking lot. that hit another vehicle and

none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening. the chevy's driver was detained for questioning. and investigators now know what happened to cause this american airlines jet to catch fire, but not why. the american airlines flight was about to leave chicago for miami when an engine failed, spewing pieces for thousands of feet and setting fuel on fire. passengers even ran for their lives but luckily no major injuries. >> amazing there you when you see those pictures. we have some more pictures to show you. surveillance video from outside a walmart about 20 miles outside there. it appears to show an abduction outside the store. two men get out of a car and put a third person into its trunk against his or her will. but witnesses say the three appeared to be, quote, play fighting. earlier at least in the day. now, police are trying to figure out if a crime was committed or if the three were just goofing around. >> it's a harsh prank, stuffing someone in a trunk. >> with friends like that. well, speaking of that.

a family from tennessee is taking on amazon in a $30 a family from tennessee is taking on amazon in a $30 million lawsuit. >> it's over a hoverboard they bought from the retail giant that caught fire and burned down their home, also destroying nearly all of their personal possessions. abc's marci gonzalez has more. >> reporter: online retail giant amazon is facing a massive lawsuit just as millions of their customers start working on their holiday shopping lists. a tennessee couple claims the company was negligent for selling them this hoverboard that eventually caught fire, torching their million-dollar home. >> the fact that a toy caused this kind of destruction to our lives, it's just wrong. >> reporter: brian and megan fox bought their kids the hoverboard

a few weeks later it burst into flames, destroying their home. >> when i got there, i was kicking the doors and i thought i'm going to lose two of my four children today. >> reporter: the fox family is seeking $30 million in damages, claiming amazon knew the dangers of the product. the suit alleges the family thought they were purchasing a hoverboard with a samsung lithium ion battery but instead were sold a counterfeit product. both manufacturers, distributors, and sellers responsible for defective products. >> reporter: these balance boards have long been under fire. to date, the consumer products safety commission has investigated more than 60 hoverboard fires and has recalled more than half a million of the popular products from ten different companies. marci gonzalez, abc news, new york. >> amazon was not among the companies named in that july recall we should mention.
