banners and signs-- thousands of bay area california students protested with a walk out as well. according to berkeley unified school district-- about 15-hundred berkeley high school students participated in a protest at that school. the biggest race of the night here in nevada was the fight to fill harry reid's senate seat. catherine cortez masto narrowly defeated republican congressman joe heck. the final numbers put cortez- masto ahead of heck by jus that makes her the first latina woman to become a u-s senator...and the first woman elected to the senate in nevada. republicans are still the majority in the house and the senate, and with donald trump in the white house-- masto is promising to try and keep things balanced. 9:53-10:02 our government is built on a system of checks and balances... and i will promise you this-- i will be one hell of a check on him." the week we will keep the sunshine around with highs degrees above where we should be. expect winds to be light! by the weekend, a weak disturbance passes north of the valley and will allow for a few clouds to pop in and out of the city degrees in the valley. winds will be light and ov into the mid 50s. early next week highs will try to hit 80 degrees again but as we move later into the week a big cool down could be heading our way. it looks dry through the extended forecast, but with any weather system things can change so stay tuned for the latest. back to our political coverage

disturbing find from a new report by the american cancer society according to the american cancer society 5-point-5 million women are expected to die from cancer by the year 20-30 that's a 60-p increase in less than 20 years breast cancer is the deadliest form of cancer among women rates of breast cancer survival are hugely dependent on early detection and treatment survival rates also vary greatly from country to country the u-s has seen a 20 percent drop in cancer incidences and mortality rates since 1991 that is thanks to better tobacco control and medical treatment the american cancer society says the massive increase in deaths will mostly come from low and middle income countries

four teens get hurt in a north las vegas crash. it's after this three-car wreck near lake mead and simmons. only one of them is still in the hospital with serious injuries. it happened just after 7 this morning and it shut down the intersection for hours but it's back open now. - v this man you see here is zachary cory and he's now charged with a shooting his daughter last night..... he's facing a charge of felony child endangerment officers

near pecos and las vegas boulevard around 8. we're told he was manipulating a small 22-caliber gun.. when it went off and his daughter was hit. overnight-- a man gets attacked while he slept. this happened near washington and valley view. police say two people in masks got into the home and pulled the man out of bed. they hit the man who was sleeping inside several times. the criminals got away with cash. police are looking for who did this. metro policen identifying these men they believe are responsible for a series of cell phone store robberies. police say each time they'd walk in posing as customers, wait to distract the workers then take phones and run out. if you recognize them -- call police. police in north las vegas are trying to figure out why a woman was murdered. officers were out at the home near lamb and centennial around 7-30 last night. three other relatives were home at the time the woman was killed. police believe this is a
