tv Morning Blend ABC November 11, 2016 9:00am-10:01am PST
9:00 am
good friday morning, everybody. happy veterans day. we're taking a live look outside right now downtown. >> yeah. >> celebrating the special day today with discounts, tickets and a special slot tournament. i got it. >> stay with me. >> the shinta. >> i didn't know. >> great stuff. >> i didn't know. >> i didn't know. now i know. >> we have got a shinta in here. >> can we? >> he is the best. i love him. >> i can't wait. >> we have discussed ever since this became a thing.
9:01 am
much. >> i like it when he slops the table. well, i don't know that -- >> ow. >> hey. i don't know about you guys, but we're feeling a little bit better today. this election sort of was stressful in the middle of the week. >> yeah. we have open minds. i have an open mind. i consider myself an independent. first 100 days, don't agree with all of it, but a lot of it kind of sensible. >> here is the thing. no matter what side you on, about 52% of nevada probably had -- cork county specifically. 52% of clark county probably had a little bit of a difficult week. >> yeah. 52%. >> it's been challenging. to kind of like recalibrate for some people and as obama said, the sun will rise and it has and here we are. it's friday. >> here is what we need. we probably can't pull it up,
9:02 am
like just a yoga on the set. everyone relax. just simmer down and relax. >> simmer down now. >> i will tell you in my family, between my mother and i, one of us had to call and concede to the other. there was that call. i'm not going to tell you guys which side i was on and my mother. but there was a serious concession call and there also was a bet in the form of one person buying dinner for the other. >> wow. >> you know that means you're a real person from las vegas. you're making side bets. >> this is the stuff that affects us really quick. >> it really does. >> we'll go down the list. question one was the gun control -- not gun control. background checks. we have obviously when you buy a gun from a regular shop, there is obviously background check. but i, for example, two years
9:03 am
the way. but when you have as many break-ins in las vegas as you can. >> some areas. >> you -- i prefer to have one. i had a shotgun. it was too big for my wife. she was like i'm never going to touch that. >> i'm picturing marsha with it. >> so i sold the gun o a friend of mine. >> which is a transfer? >> but there is no like -- it's like okay. here, here. just sign this thing and that's it. but there was nothing to sign. i wrote something in word document. >> interesting. you felt like it should be more. >> i felt like i should arrested for what i did. so i know a lot of people it's a hot button issue. it did pass narrowly. number two. >> yep. number two. >> if you were disaimportanted by the election. >> good news! >> don't worry about a thing. this is gonna be super interesting. guy, we're talking about the marijuana question. it's gonna be really interesting to see how this affects las vegas and where pot will be
9:04 am
prohibited. >> it should be used like alcohol if not more strict. i have never smoked in my life, right hand to god. i will never smoke in my life. have i had a contact, yes. >> i have to tell you about my first contact high. >> oh, boy. >> this is amazing. i was at michael jackson. >> wow! >> in the '80s. and i was teeny. my mom dropped me out. she waited in the van. i was with family and i was like what is that and then all i knew is when my mom said when i got back into the van, i was like mom, i'm really tired. and i went to sleep. that was my first contact high. >> did a skunk get in? >> yes. exactly! >> so if it's happening, hey, it's gonna go to education. how about we fund education in nevada? i love this. >> interesting. here is the thing about marijuana versus alcohol. when someone is drinking next to you, you do experience maybe the person being drunk.
9:05 am
>> which is very true. >> if somebody is drinking next to you in a car, you'll experience that on the side of your car. >> clearly. >> the way i've heard it explained is the best way i've heard it. drunk people go through stop signs. >> yes. >> and high people wait for them to turn green. >> oh, that's awesome. listen, this is clearly a cultural wave in this country and nevada -- >> it passed in massachusetts, >> question three? >> this is a big one for me. >> the open retail electric energy market. more competition. >> competition in -- competition is good. no one likes monopolies. i'm yes. >> because we think it's going to keep our prices lower. >> sure. >> we'll see. >> but here is the caveat, from what i was reading, is that it may or may not, literally, in the voter guide, may or may not include deregulation. with that it means they can set whatever prices they want and
9:06 am
had deregulation, they've seen for many years at least, their prices go up for us. then they go down wholesale, so your bigger companies or casinos will see lower. but yes generally see higher. i voted yes, and here is why. we'll see it again in 2018. it passed, but it has to come back and be voted on again in order for it to fully pass and become part of our constitution. in 2023, then we'll actually see it. >> when you and i discussed affect solar? i still don't have an answer to that. if anyone out there has that, please tell us on social media. question number four, by the way, clark county just, a lot of yes men. >> yes, we can. >> yes men and women out there 'cause we passed everything. >> number four was no sales tax on medical equipment. >> that's fair. >> number five. >> fuel tax. >> fuel tax. >> we're already paying. i would like to know how much we're paying on a gallon of gas.
9:07 am
that back to you. >> there we go. we have answers for you. >> i hope you're all feeling better. >> yeah. relax. >> hope you're still happy. >> can i tell you this? wasn't it warming to see trump with obama, though? >> healing. >> yeah. >> i have to go over here. we want to hear from you about this. share your comments on our facebook and twitter pages. vegasmorningblend.com. who knows? we could say it right here live on the air. >> thank you so much, shawn. technology is a huge part life. it makes the perfect gift for anyone this holiday season on your list. shawn recently checked into some of the hottest tech items on the market. let's take a look. >> black friday and cyber monday are about to officially kick off the holiday shopping season and guess what's on the top of those lists. that's right. tech. just so happens that we have tech expert andrea here to help us cut through all the noise,

9:09 am
room s the details hop off the screen. this is the smart tv, too. so you can easily switch between live tv, screaming video, gaming app, whatever you're doing, and you don't even have to worry about programming the remote. you just point it into the tv and it does it for you. >> awesome. >> drones. another hot holiday trend. ghost drone is easily controlled from an app right on your smart phone. it's great fun for the whole family. yo you can shoot 4k video. incredible video and optional vr goggles give you a real time first person view. so you see what the drone is seeing. if you worry about crashing like i do, no problem. e hang is the one company that will replace it if you break it. >> wow! oh, my -- see that, is big. that's big. >> that's a big thing. >> these drones, a lot of parents worry you're going to crash it into a wall the first five seconds. all of a sudden, you got a

we are getting warmed up for las vegas' premiere contemporary enjoys bringing the classical music to the community in fresh, exciting ways. they present this week the nevada premiere of postcards from morocco. >> that's right. joining us now with more artistic director, skip. also with us, happens to be a mean baritone. also musical director dean. also with us is ginger.
9:15 am
>> so good. thanks for having us. >> seventh season. congratulations. >> thank you. >> what's this mean for the production and the company? >> well, we've been around for seven years now. it's kind of hard to believe it's been that long. but here we are. we've been plugging away at contemporary opera trying to figure out how it bring a platform for the arts in las vegas that includes more communication with our community. so we chose this postcard from morocco to launch our seventh season. it's really we've never done anything quite like it. >> tell us about the opera. why is it different? >> it was written in 1971 by dominic argento based on robert louis stevenson a a child's garden of verses. there is no, like, story. [ laughter ] it's really a theatrical piece that happens to be written in the style of opera. it's kind of the way it is staged, is like a ballet for
9:16 am
cast is doing amazing work. we've never done anything quite like it. it's pretty good stuff. >> fantastic. musically, this is something you don't want to miss if you're a fan of the opera. >> absolutely not. first of all, we have a live orchestra. eight piece chamber ensemble. traditional stuff like strings, clarinet. but we also have classical guitar and slide whistle. >> who place the slide whistle and if you don't have it, can i be >> it's actually a percussion chair. >> i want a slide whistle. that would be amazing. >> it's a lot of fun. we've got that. the show covers so much musical ground genre wise. we go from waltzes to foxtrot from the 20s, vaudeville stuff, jazz. if you like 20th century music, we've got that, too. then lastly, like we said, this is the nevada premiere of the
9:17 am
who is alive and well. it's his most celebrated work. in another city, you might get to see a show like this, but not very often. this is a great chance to see what a home grown modern opera might look like. >> general ginger, we're looking forward to hearing you see. tell us what we can expect for the rest of the season. >> we're looking at doing a big russian opera. we're doing that in february. then we're going to do french opera that's completely english language, updated. very funny. it's called the star. we're doing that in may. >> awesome. the reason why ginger -- she has a little microphone because her voice is too powerful. >> you are about to hear from ginger. >> what are you about to perform for us? >> we're going to do the hand mirror aria from postcard from morocco.
9:21 am
?? ?? >> wow. no one should drown you! >> i know! >> great having you. >> thank you so much. >> pleasure. >> thank you. >> she doesn't need a microphone. sin city opera p card from morocco at the winchester cultural center opening this friday through november 20. are you on facebook or twitter? you can like or follow us. >> vegasmorningblend.com on facebook. links can be found on our web
9:24 am
yes indeed. welcome back to the blend. it's that time of year again when those 65 or older are faced with a very important choice regarding their healthcare coverage. >> here to discuss the importance of open enrollment is our guests. welcome, gentlemen. >> good morning. >> gents. >> subsequents. we were noting that you looked very patriotic today in veterans day. >> that's right. happy veterans day. >> absolutely. thank you for your service. >> listen, just a month left in open enrollment. still time left to make changes. tell us why this is such an important time for seniors. >> right. very important. it's open enrollment this time every year. seniors 65 and over, here is an opportunity to make changes to their health plans. it's important 'cause what we do now or don't do now is going to
9:25 am
sometimes as we age and get older, our medical and financial needs change. so this is a good time to sit down and reevaluate. >> you're not done voting for this year. there is one popular vote for you. let's talk about exactly what seniors should be focusing on as far as their health situation and the plans that are available. >> good questions. we get older, we may develop chronic diseases. we may have chronic diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol. so you want to consider things like how much will i need to go see my will i need to go see specialists? am i on medications? are my medications covered by my health plan? these are things you want to consider? is my doctor on my health plan? do i need to look at that? so these are things you want to consider. >> gary, there are multiple medicare plan options available to people. can you run us through them? >> sure. the four main categories is original medicare, which covers your doctor and hospital visits,
9:26 am
percentage. in fact, up to 80% in most cases. >> it doesn't go up to 100. >> it doesn't. there is no maximum out of pocket limit. so one stay in a hospital could really tap you out. so there is original medicare. then there are medicare supplement plans which can help to bridge the gap between the things that original medicare doesn't pay. but they don't offer total coverage and extra care, which is where the medicare advantage plans come in, or part c plans, similar to the with united healthcare, medicare complete, we offer plans that are no cost to individuals to see a doctor, go to the hospital, no cost, as well as additional benefits like hearing and dental and vision. this year we're really excited that we've added a telemedicine, or virtual visit for folks who can't get out and see the doctor. they can on a smart phone or computer. just log in and talk to a healthcare partner or other doctor that's out there. >> that's really been a total game changer as far as being able to have that.
9:27 am
your nephew or niece is there to let them know how to open that app. >> that's right. >> i showed my dad a picture of facebook yesterday. >> what kind of feedback have you been getting for those virtual -- >> the benefits start january 2017. >> it's something that has existed for people beyond medicare? >> correct. great feedback. we're excited to bring it into the medicare world this year. >> fantastic. if you have like strep throat or something like that, hey, turn on the light on your phone. that's what you have. allall right. write a prescription and head to the local pharmacy. >> some day you might be sending tests out for something. >> lick your screen. >> clean it first. >> please. let's talk about healthcare partners then. there is a total care model there. typically we think we go to our general practitioner and then if
9:28 am
we have to go there 40 minutes early, sign every paper, 15 pages later, you're finally done. not the case with a total care model. >> no. we're really proud of our total care model. this is really a coordinated model of care. it takes a team approach. you basically take the patient and the doctor, puts them president center and we surround you with a whole host of people. other doctors, specialists, nurses, case managers, social workers, practice managers and on. we healthcare. we want to make sure that if you're healthy, you stay healthy. if you have chronic diseases, your chronic diseases are managed. that you're receiving your age-appropriate immunizations and cancer screenings. so this is a total care model. we're very proud of it. we partner with local companies like united and humana to make sure the best options are there for you. >> absolutely. if you want to find out more about what united healthcare brings to the table, how do we do that?
9:29 am
plans.com. there is our 1-800 number. we have our retail establishments at the galleria mall and our corporate office and we also have a lot of community meetings where folk cans get additional information. >> i love how you know there is a lot of questions and you're there to answer no matter which avenue they want to take. >> it's all about education. so important that individuals understand what the options are and then make the right choice. >> absolutely. >> and you both for being here to do. >> thank you so much. >> thanks for having us. >> don't lick your screen right now. bad. >> don't wait to make these important decisions. medicare open enrollment is happening now. but hurry up because it does close december 7. for more information, just visit the web site on your screen. >> more to come on the "morning blend" in minutes.
9:32 am
the holiday season is almost here and what better way to gather up a little extra spending cash than by cashing in your old stuff. visit neil sackmary at nevada coin mart where he has the art of turning what you don't want into cash. >> neil sackmary is an artist. he's an artist of money. hi. >> i don't print my own. i get it from the bank and give it to >> we'll talk about the government printing their own, but that's another conversation. you want the gold standard, go to nevada coin mart. >> can we talk about gold. by the way, it is up this week. >> tremendous gold is rising like you wouldn't believe. today's veterans day, we have to thank our veterans. very, very important. we wouldn't be here without them. when it comes to gold and silver, they're skyrocketing. you need to stop what you're
9:33 am
and diamonds and rolexs. now is the most tremendous time ever. >> really? >> it's tremendous because here is the thing, you're able to get the money for the gifts, which is one thing. but a lot of people, it's not about the money. it's about that they want to down size or declutter and they don't want their kids fighting over it, their families fighting over it. they're getting older. these things are facts so what happens is they like people, myself, to speak to them directly and speak in fact. that's what i tell my clients. you need to understand this is your life and that no one else wants your life. they want a piece of your life. maybe they want a ring or whatever. but at the end of the day, everybody has so much stuff that you need to take it and down
9:34 am
into cash immediately. >> you buy pretty much anything, except refrigerators. >> i do buy refrigerators. >> oh, you do? >> the thing is i buy any type of jewelry, any type of coin, proof sets, mint sets, silver dollars, silver eagles, gold coins, silver coins, currency, anything like that, any type of collectibles, yes, we just bought a beautiful arcade machine, a coke machine. if you have stuff like that, you bring it into neil immediately. stop what you're doing. the phone number is right there on the screen. you need to take my advice and call. i know that you have a question. let me tell you, i'm talking to you and i know you have a question. make the phone call, find out directions. find out how you can get there. find out what your product is worth. i don't care what the question is, just call. >> wow. what's the meaning of life, neil? >> the meaning of life is to
9:35 am
anybody halfway. if you want something legally, you have to go and take it and make sure that you take care of yourself because we need to work hard. my wife and i work 365 days a year from 9 to 6 every day. let me tell you, people come in and they respect that more than ever because they know that i'm there for them and i show loyalty to them and they show loyalty to me by making me the number one jewelry rolex and diamond buyer in las vegas, neil sackmary, an expert. the meaning of life and you just answered it for me. >> 100%, it is very deep and it's very, very -- that's why clients get excited to come and see me, because they know that i am the real person here at tv station as well. >> let's talk about that. speaking of your clients, you know shawn and i have a special affinity for you. we like you. we see him come in the studio,
9:36 am
so here is what people may not know. this is a moment, this is a neil -- why is this happening on veterans day? >> it's very, very important. >> listen, what people may not know is that you also have a lot of other people who feel strongly about you and your business. as seen on all your online reviews. i went on to google and i pulled one of the many, many, many positive reviews you have. >> 167 to be exact. >> she's not counting. google. came in ten minutes before closing to sell my ring. everyone was kind to me. they patiently waited for me to be done. i met neil. great guy, by the way. straight to the point. he looked at my ring and offered me the best price, better than most places. >> yes. so the thing is this, neil sackmary, nevada coin mart, you can go to yelp, you can go to google, you can go to facebook. you can go to yellow pages.com. you can go to city search.
9:37 am
you want and i will tell you, there are a few negatives. >> bound to happen. >> because they are the competitor that has a similar name because they have nothing better to do except look at their life and waste time. neil sackmary doe time to waste and that's why my clients come and see me. for that reason, i'm going to say to you, when you look at my reviews online, yo tremendous reviews because people come to me and they get excited. so when they come there, they do read a lot of the reviews. i can't tell you how many clients do spend nights before and they look at the reviews and say, that's why i came in. and let me tell you, the reviews are real. >> and you know if you don't have a few negative reviews, i think it's suspicious.
9:38 am
today, you can fool some people -- please some people sometime, but you can't please all the people all the time. >> that is correct. that is why for today the veterans day hypnotic trance, you have to go. but let me tell you, i'm talking to you. before you go to the veterans day operated today, you need to stay what you're doing. you don't need o drink the extra sip of coffee. you need come and see me and sell your stuff. that way you have money to donate to the veterans who are at the parade. >> great having you. thank you so much. information, visit their location on jones, north of flamingo or call them or go to

9:42 am
>> okay. so 23 years, we've been doing this. not that i'm biased, but this is the event that kicks off the holiday season, november 15 at 5:00 p.m., we're gonna turn on one million lights across three acres of cactus outside of the chocolate factory. it's beautiful. this is by far the most lights we've ever had in the cactus garden. we have a million -- you're gonna see this thing from space. we're in >> you are? >> people are going to look down from iowa like what the heck is that? >> suitly. hope any they come out and see us. it's a wonderful community tradition. we invite everyone from the community to come out. all you have to do to participate in the event on november 15, come see the lights turn on is bring out a nonperishable food item. people donate to help. or an unwrapped toy -- sorry.

where we dip marshmallows and pretzels, strawberries and chocolate. you can interact right there. you can try these things right on the spot. >> i just a moment. >> it's like a giant fondue room? >> i never heard it described that way, but i'm going to start using that. i love it. >> as long as you invite me, you can use it. >> any time. >> will you invite me to what you brought today because there is a lot of chocolate in front >> so i'm very proud of our holiday selections this year. this is by far the best chocolate portfolio we've had in years. so the thing i'm most excited about, to be honest, is our new holiday tins. this is actually something that's a collectible tin. we have two different sizes. >> remember those old school butter consumey tins? this puts it to a whole new level. >> no one liked the butter cookies.
9:45 am
and then you reuse it and you can make christmas cookies. my mom has been bringing out tins for 30 years with her christmas cookies. you put them in the freezer. >> we have this beautiful tin made here in las vegas. it's really cool stuff. then we also have a lot more stocking stuffers this year. you can see our little tree hangers that have like chocolate covered almonds. >> there is chocolate in the ornament. >> that was smart. you actually hang it on the tree and then open it up on morning. >> doesn't that make sense? >> it's a cool concept. it just kind of makes it a little bit more fun. >> this is the first time i'm offered shawn a chocolate. so i don't know what he'll pick. i don't know if you go dark or light. >> the thing that confuses me, i don't know which one is which. >> you have to bite into it. >> yes. you have to fight -- well, no, no. you do have to bite into it. that's one way to do it. or there is a piece map on the bottom. >> there is a map. >> no chocolate chewy carmel.
9:46 am
>> no chocolate chewy caramel. i'm having anxiety! >> let me take care of that for you. >> you can put it upside down. >> i'm going to grab this because i can tell there is nuts in it and i love nuts. >> that is the macadamia salute. fantastic choice. >> great having you. >> thank you guys for having me and we have a great event tomorrow so everyone knows. decadence in the desert, we bring out local artists, food trucks. so from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. tomorrow, the nice community event as well. we do donate the proceeds from that to opportunity village. >> beautiful. thank you for the chocolate. >> thank you so much. >> this tuesday ethel m chocolate flips the switch like we did on this 23rd annual holiday cactus lighting. the event runs from 5 to 10 at their location on cactus garden drive near sunset and henderson. remember to bring -- this is

but we're gonna build lamps that are gonna give them accessibility. there is another veteran one story of a veteran who came back and was homeless and realized she finally got back on her feet but realized there are so many others who needed help. she bought a place that was a kiir center. this is where veterans can get jobs and their lives in order. but they don't have ramps or accessible bathrooms. there is stories like that all over the country. this i difference. >> good for you. >> yeah, that's fantastic. this is a partnership between heros at home and rebuilding together, it's grown throughout the years, hasn't it? >> yeah, it has. it's really been amazing to see. if you guys probably heard about rebuilding together, really do phenomenal things. and so this is one of the things where people ask, what can i do to help out a veteran? i always say thank them for their service, but this is going

really changing their lives so that they can have that sort of self-independence that they so well deserve. so it's a huge thing. since it's the season of giving, why not give to the people who have given so much? >> yes. absolutely. ty, you've been out there working with veterans directly in many different instances. how do you feel that we all can make a difference in the lives of veterans today? what are you inspired by today? >> i think this is things that we all can make a difference in. i have to say, there are these moments, a lot of times it's helping a military family or a veteran and that moment where they can actually stand up out of a wheelchair and they do their best to salute the other comrades is pretty amazing. and it's one of those things that sticks with you a long time. and this is exactly that same feeling, to be able to give them

that they so well deserve. and it's something we can all do by making a purchase or giving what we can on the way out of a sears. it's a huge deal and it's something that i think really can change the lives of a lot of people who have given so much. >> how are you not after all these years emotionally wrecked from doing your shows and giving out all niece great things. now going straight for the military. how has your heart not exploded by this >> it's great. i do therapy through television. no. i'll be honest with you, i'm really blessed to be part of it all because it really changes sort of like who you are as a human, too. i've been blessed to be part of things that do make a difference and they stick with you a long time. so yeah. it's awesome to be part of some of these projects, i have to admit. but there are a lot of people that are doing just great things
