"mad dog mattis," as he's known, is a retired marine corps general. the former head of u.s. central command. a warrior scholar known for his aggressiveness in combat. after their meeting -- >> he's the real deal. >> reporter: but he may not have been trump's first choice. retired four-star general jack keane tells abc news that trump offered him the job but he declined for personal reasons. transition officials wouldn't confirm an offer, but said trump was very interested. trump has already announced five key positions. as trump solidifies his security team, new questions tonight

the time to go through a long but winning trial on trump u. too bad." trump's business interests and how he'll separate from them continue to raise questions. an indian journalist tweeted about this meeting last week between trump and indian business partners involved in a trump-branded real estate project near mumbai. the president-elect giving it a thumbs up. >> i can assure the american people that there wouldn't be any wrongdoing, or any sort of undue influence over any decision making. >> and mary joins us now from bedminster. so there's this news tonight that not everybody in the trump family is going to be moving to the white house in january? >> reporter: that's right, dan. as the meetings continue, the future first lady melania and her son barron expected to stay in new york at least through next spring, they're hesitant to pull the 10-year-old out of school during the middle of the year. the president-elect telling reporters here today that they'll be joining him in washington very soon. dan? >> mary bruce in new jersey. thank you.

on the one hand the president-to-be putting together his team. on the other, the public figure prone to angry tweets. his latest target, the cast of the broadway hit "hamilton." trump is demanding an apology for this message sent from the stage to mike pence. who was in the audience. abc's ron claiborne tonight on what pence himself is saying. >> reporter: tonight, vice president-elect mike pence responding for the first time to the mixed reception at the hamilton performance. some booing as he [ applause and boos ] >> you know, when we arrived, we heard a few boos, we heard some cheers. and i nudged my kids and reminded them that's what freedom sounds like. ? i am not throwing away my shot ? >> reporter: the hit broadway show tells the story of the founding fathers, played by a cast of mostly african-american actors. pence says he enjoyed the show and did stay for that tense moment afterwards.

america who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us. but we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our american values and to work on behalf of all of us. all of us. [ cheers and applause ] >> i can tell you i wasn't offended by what was said. i'll leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue to say it. >> reporter: pence's boss with a different take. in a blizzard of tweets donald trump calling the cast "rude," accusing them of "harassing" pence, and saying they should "immediately apologize." and today outside his new jersey home -- >> are you still upset about "hamilton"? >> they were very inappropriate. >> reporter: the "new york daily news" spoke to the actor who delivered those remarks from the stage. >> it was important that we did this. and i'm so glad that we had the opportunity. and i'm so glad that he stayed because he stayed and he listened, and i truly appreciate him doing that. >> reporter: the incident satirized on "saturday night live." >> heard you went to see "hamilton."

>> it was good. i got a free lecture. >> heard they booed you. >> absolutely. >> reporter: trump taking issue with that too, tweeting, "i watched parts of saturday night live last night. it is a totally one-sided, biased show, nothing funny at all." reviews of what took place, mixed. >> i don't think that anything the cast said was disrespectful. >> we spent a lot of money to come and see "hamilton" and we really don't want to hear political statements. >> reporter: some trump supporters are calling for a boycott of "hamilton" over this incident. but the show mere in new york city, it is sold out almost to the end of next year. and dan, sellout performances also in chicago. the show opening in los angeles later next year. dan? >> ron, thank you. a quick note about the current president tonight. barack obama and the russian president vladimir putin came face to face today, possibly for the last time. the white house says the two men

during the abac summit in peru focusing on ukraine and syria. this was their first talk since the election. the u.s. has accused russian hackers of trying to interfere with our presidential race. now to the breaking news out of texas. the manhunt under way right now for the gunman who killed a police officer in cold blood. that officer was shot during a traffic stop right across the street from police headquarters. here's abc's marci gonzalez. >> he's been shot. >> reporter: tonight, a tense manhunt in texas for the killer who ambushed a san antonio poli o the head. >> i've got an officer down in front of headquarters. >> reporter: investigators say officer benjamin marconi was in his squad car just before noon today writing a traffic ticket across from police headquarters, when another driver pulled up behind him, walked up to the passenger side window and shot marconi twice, before driving off in this dark-colored car. >> this is everyone's worst nightmare. >> reporter: investigators are now scanning surveillance video. >> the vehicle drove through headquarters parking lot. >> reporter: trying to identify

late today authorities releasing this image of a person of interest. >> unfortunately, like dallas, like baton rouge, it's happened here. >> reporter: already this year, 58 other officers in this country have been shot to death in the line of duty. a more than 60% increase over last year. and dan, tonight the search for the suspect is on. and police in san antonio are being extra cautious. now only making traffic stops in teams until this killer is caught. dan? >> marci, thank you. in chicago tonight, two arrests after the killing of a congressman's 15-year-old grandson. a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy now charged with murder. they are accused of shooting jovan wilson inside his home during an argument over a pair of sneakers. wilson is the grandson of the longtime congressman danny davis. more than 500 murders have been reported in chicago this year. weather now and the first major snowstorm of the year is hitting right at the start of the thanksgiving travel rush. whiteout conditions from

in some spots temperatures plunging more than 30 degrees. in fewer than 24 hours. strong winds downing power lines, causing two cars to catch fire. and abc's eva pilgrim is right in the thick of it. >> reporter: tonight winter blasting its way across the country. whiteout conditions from michigan to pennsylvania. plows working to clear roadways, visibility next to zero at times. forcing drivers to slow down. many still no match for the blowing snow and freezing sliding off the highways. snow and ice ricocheting off windshields. the roads here in watertown are snow covered but still passable. concerns that will change when the sun goes down. parts of upstate new york expecting up to 20 inches of snow by tuesday morning and temperatures taking a nosedive. plummeting over 30 degrees in just 24 hours. in northern michigan, powerful

igniting two cars. >> and as you can see, it's still coming down. >> reporter: across parts of minnesota, they're digging out from over a foot of snow. and the big house turning into a snow globe. michigan celebrating its win with snow angels. the snow is still falling, but it's the wind that's the real problem. it's blowing the snow, making it hard to see. dan? >> eva, thank you. let's get right out to abc's senior meteorologist rob marciano. hey, rob. where is the storm now, and where is it heading next? >> reporter: well, it's centered in northern new england. but as eva mentioned, the winds are blasting all the way downtown i-95 corridor. wind chills in new york city are below freezing. what's remarkable about this storm, how much snow has fallen away from the lake effect snow zone. look at the radar and you can see it's still coming down in parts of the hudson valley and accumulating heavily east of albany. we've seen over a foot of snow and we'll see more of this over the next 24 hours and the lake effect snow machine from erie and ontario.

to 20 inches more pile up along i-80 especially. i want to show you what's going on as far as the wind chills. tomorrow morning 23 degrees in sthats. it will be 28 degrees in atlanta. so a cold blast of winter after what's been a pretty mild fall. dan? >> rob, thank you. adding insult to injury for any traveler worried about this, thousands of workers at chicago's o'hare airport are preparing to go on strike this week. airports across the country looking to avoid long lines like we saw last summer. here now, ab's gloria riviera. >> reporter: tonight, fears an already hectic travel season could be even worse. 2,000 employees working at major hub chicago o'hare, from baggage handlers to cleaning crews, are poised to strike over low wages. in a statement, american airlines said, "we are working to ensure there is no disruption to our operation." this thanksgiving aaa is projecting a million more people will get on planes, trains or hit the road.

all. passengers hoping epic lines like last spring aren't in their future. tsa says it's ready. >> we're running a daily operation now that focuses specifically on screening operations hour by hour at the top 30 airports. >> reporter: 1,400 new officers have been hired. 2,000 part-timers promoted to full time. >> i always get here early, too, before i get on the flight so i know i have time to adjust. >> reporter: the tsa's best advice we've heard, get to the airport two domestic flights, three hours before international. and as for chicago o'hare, the union says on monday it will announce which day it will strike. dan? >> could be a frustrating week at the airports. gloria, thank you. now to the investigation into the deadly crash of a medical flight in nevada. the plane exploded in flames after crashing in a parking lot. the patient and three crew members were killed. so why did the plane go down about a minute after takeoff? here's abc's phillip mena. >> reporter: tonight, the investigation into this fiery

a medical plane going down in a crowded parking lot in nevada. >> we have an explosion at the barrick's parking lot, possibly involving an airplane. >> reporter: massive fireballs setting off explosions. chaos as firefighters rush to douse the flames. all four people on that plane, killed, including nurse tiffany urresti and paramedic jake shepard. >> big heart, big personality. a huge loss for everyone. >> reporter: also among the dead, the pilot, uji airi, and a patient. the plane destined for a hospital in utah, plummeting moments after take-off. witness reports leading police to believe there was a mechanical failure. we've seen crashes like this before. in july a medical transport plane went down in northern california, killing four. and last year in colorado a helicopter crashing, killing the pilot. medical aircraft transport more than 500,000 patients a year. since 2010 there have been more than 20 fatalities. american medflight, which owns
