4:25 am
i know it's been a lodge night for you, anthony. >> it has. people are tweeting me saying they think i look exhausted. >> thanks a lot. you look a great to boost your confidence a little. let's start with republicans. there's a lot of talk about whether donald trump is going to be able to get out his novice caucus supporters. how was ted cruz able to best him? >> trump did. for people who said it because their first caucus, donald trump did very well but ted cruz did even better. it's very clear what ted cruz was able to do was identify not just some new caucusgoers but a lot of very regular voters, a lot of people who would be reliable voters. he did very well with them and he did particularly well with people who called themselves very conservative. and that's sort of according to script. that was really his play book. >> so marco rubio, he really wanted to come in third and he did, but on the heels of donald trump. that's pretty good.
4:26 am
strong third. >> it had him in the mid-teens. he exceeded that. with the primaries, it is not so much about the delegates. it's so often about beating or not beating expectations. so for rubio politically that's going to beat expectations. >> speaking of expectations and the democrats we have bernie sanders basically neck and neck with hillary clinton. in terms of expectations she's expected to be the leader. he's expected not to. what does this all mean? >> what this means is there's a big age split in t democratic party. hillary clinton did better with the older voters as we expected. bernie sanders did well with the younger voters, obviously not quite enough to give him any kind of decisive win, but to get him to just about even. but there's also a split, too, among what voters wanted to see in a candidate.
4:27 am
for cares about you, bernie sanders did very, very well. for electability even as voters told us going in, they wanted to see that as a candidate and that went for hillary clinton. >> thank you so much for talking with us. always a pleasure to talk to you. >> thanks, anne-marie. coming up on "cbs this morning," the results of the iowa caucuses. major garrett speaks with ted cruz plus reaction and analysis. we'll hear from "face the nation" moderator john dickerson and we'll take you to san francisco where jeff glor will show us how the super bowl has evolved over 50 years. that's the "cbs morning news" for this tuesday. thanks for watching. i'm anne-marie green. have a great day. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com forthis tuesday. i'm thanks for watching. i'm anne-marie green.
