dollars of tax increases for educational programs that are now in place. paul nelson talked one-on-one with the governor today about how things are looking for the silver state. paul? he's pretty optimistic, landon -- especially with the improvement in our state over the past five years. the governor says he expects that upward movement to continue -- whether it's improving the economy or education. gov. sandoval "how many of you like to read, every day?" speaking to a group of second graders -- governor sandoval reiterated the importance of literacy. this is the first year for many of his educational reform -- funding things like english language learning, all-day kindergarten, read by three, and several other k-12 programs. gov. sandoval "all of it's coming together and it's going to take awhile to see these results as they come through but i'm really pleased. in my conversation with educators, they're pleased as well." the new programs are paid for with new businesses fees. while the move was controversial -- sandoval says there hasn't been much fallout from the tax hikes.

component of that was all these new dollars, with regard to the commerce tax, were tied to education, and everyone in nevada knows that we need to do better by our kids." businesses also have the option to donate money to a scholarship fund -- and write that off their payroll taxes. the education savings account pays 5-thousand dollars for students to go to a private school -- but that's on hold as it goes through the courts. gov. sandoval "i'm hopeful that the nevada supreme court rules on it expeditiously because there are a lot of parents and kids out there that are wondering what's going to happen." construction the silver state's economy is also continues to recover. economists say the jobs lost during the recession could be completely recovered this year. and the unemployment rate is down to 6.4 percent -- the lowest in nearly eight years. but the governor's not satisfied. gov. sandoval "we still have one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation. so i, every day, am going to continue to work to diversify our economy and bring more jobs to nevada." while companies like tesla and switch have come to nevada -- many solar companies have left

rate hikes are too much to overcome, despite previous incentives. sandoval says that industry needs to rebound to help make nevada the capital of renewable energy. gov. sandoval "we have solar resources. we have geothermal resources. we have wind resources that we can capitalize on and rooftop solar is an important component of that." you might remember plans to build a veterans home in reno. the state is putting 14-million dollars into the project -- and waiting for the federal government to match it. sandoval says nevada's financial commitment to the project has bumped the home up on the priority list -- and construction could begin this year. covering the big story live, paul nelson, channel two news. turning to campaign 2016... the presidential candidates aren't wasting any time as they focus on new hampshire - one day after iowa's caucuses. ted cruz won the opening round of the republican presidential race - beating donald trump by four points in iowa. trump finished slightly ahead of marco rubio... who greeted voters in new hampshire today. "we need to beat hillary clinton
