whether it's improving the economy or education. gov. sandoval "how many of you like to read, every day?" speaking to a group of second graders -- governor sandoval reiterated the importance of literacy. this is the first year for many of his educational reform -- funding things like english language learning, all-day kindergarten, read by three, and several other k-12 programs. gov. sandoval "all of it's coming together and it's going to take awhile to see these results as they come through but i'm really pleased. in my conversation with educators, they're pleased as well." the new programs are paid for with new businesses fees. while the move was controversial -- sandoval says there hasn't been much fallout from the tax hikes. gov. sandoval "the important component of that was all these new dollars, with regard to the commerce tax, were tied to education, and everyone in nevada knows that we need to do better by our kids." businesses also have the option to donate money to a scholarship fund -- and write that off their payroll taxes. the education savings account pays 5-thousand dollars for students to go to a private school -- but that's on hold as it goes through the

gov. sandoval "i'm hopeful that the nevada supreme court rules on it expeditiously because there are a lot of parents and kids out there that are wondering what's going to happen." construction the silver state's economy is also continues to recover. economists say the jobs lost during the recession could be completely recovered this year. and the unemployment rate is down to 6.4 percent -- the lowest in nearly eight years. but the governor's not satisfied. gov. sandoval "we still have one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation. so i, every day, am going to continue to work to diversify our economy and bring more jobs to nevada." while companies like tesla and switch have come to nevada -- many solar companies have left the silver state, saying recent rate hikes are too much to overcome, despite previous incentives. sandoval says that industry needs to rebound to help make nevada the capital of renewable energy. gov. sandoval "we have solar resources. we have geothermal resources. we have wind resources that we can capitalize on and rooftop solar is an important component of that." you might remember plans to

the state is putting 14-million dollars into the project -- and waiting for the federal government to match it. sandoval says nevada's financial commitment to the project has bumped the home up on the priority list -- and construction could begin this year. covering the big story live, paul nelson, channel two news. the results of last night's caucus in iowa were no surprise to local experts. they say the close results make nevada even more important for both parties. nevada's 'first in the west' status could really set candidates apart. lokken:"so as a result of iowa...nevada has risen in importance. for rubio it's important. and it's important for trump." lokken: and to do bad in nevada would look really bad for cruz. and he really doesn't have much of a ground organization right now. eric:"i think it does up the stock of nevada because...now every race counts on the democratic side....if you win one and i win and it unfolds that way. i don't see sanders running away with this...its possible clinton could start to

some residual cloudiness will stay through the work week, but should clear out by sunday finishing the week on a sunny note. look for high temperatures to climb into the low 50s by saturday. in crime beat...a 30-year-old arizona man has been arrested in nevada. he's accused of killing two federally protected golden eagles and illegally possessing more than 120 eagle and hawk feathers. the nevada department of wildlife says dana mcivor faces six counts of unlawful possession of raptor and raptor parts, and one count of unlawful kill of an eagle. mcivor was arrested in elko sunday following reports of a reckless driver on i-80. wildlife officials say deputies hawk, two hawk wings and 124 separate eagle and hawk feathers. still to come on channel 2 news at 6-30, a new program is going to help young adults battling mental illness in nevada. find

we can make a political revolution and create an economy and democracy that works for all and not just the powerful few. welcome back, in health watch tonight young people suffering with mental illness will now be able to get the help they need. that's right the new program is the first of its kind in the state and it's called "enliven" the state of nevada and the children's cabinet formed this program to help individuals between the ages of 15 to 25 who are dealing with psychosis. dr. tracey green with the department of health and human services says that 18-thousand nevadans suffer with disturbances or mental illness. dr. tracey green, chief medical officer for dept. of health and human services: "we're going to do fully integrated services to look at whether you need housing services, whether you need a job, whether you need an education. and it's not just for the individual, it's for the individual's family or the individual's support system."
