simulate a mix of firefighting and domestic operations from the air. paul nelson shows us how it works. flight simulator this might look like a video game -- but it's actually a type of training. these guardsmen are using virtual reality for fire fighting missions. wagner "it's really hard to go out and train with the buckets and we can't just go light a tree on fire and go put it out. so, that's one of the big things is we can go in the simulator and do that." these rooms are set up to look and feel like the cockpit of a blackhawk or chinook helicopter -- and the setup includes 240 computers. pilots can choose between video screens or special goggles that allow a 360-degree view. wagner "i've played xbox and those other games but this is way better because it's virtual reality." taylor "take yourself back to

you just got your driver's license and you finally got on the freeway yourself and you opened that car up to 80-90 miles per hour and then times that by a thousand." some pilots are flying into a wildfire to medivac people out. others can practice bucket drops. but taylor says the simulator is better for communication than flying. taylor "the real bread and butter is that it allows you to deal with all the radios and all the equipment on the aircraft without actually having to take time to spend money to bring same training." paul "this technology can be used for a lot of different reasons. not just practicing firefighting missions, but also combat operations." bang bang bang" bang bang bang and it allows you to go around the world without leaving home. wagner "we were flying missions, yesterday, from around afghanistan." wagner "where we're getting engaged with enemy systems that we've never seen before and we can't do that with a real is here -- they've logged about 500 at flight hours -- saving a lot of money.

to become a meteorologist? well kristen, since i was a kid, i always knew i wanted to do something with science or math. eventually i realized meteorology was the right fit for me. it was neat talking to other their stories. one person i talked to is not only a coworker, but also a mentor of mine here at channel two. the best kind of jobs are the ones you enjoy doing. ke alger: "i say if it's your passion, then do it." for some meteorologists their interest in weather started at a young age. alex hoon now works for the national weather service in reno, but he grew up in tornado alley. alex hoon: "i went to boyscout camp when i was about ten years old, and i saw a tornado." alex hoon: "ever since then i've been fascinated with the weather." my story is somewhat similar to mike's - i always had an interest in science, but it was a high school science project that sparked my interest in meteorology. mike alger: "when i was in college i gravitated towards a chemistry and geology

over the backgrounds, the weather was something that i could drive around, look at the clouds and say hey i know what's going on up there." meteorologists - that experiencing weather is what got them interested in it. marvin boyd came to reno from north carolina. he loves all types of weather. marvin boyd: "so from a scale from of one to ten how would you rate yourself as far as being a weather nerd? probably an eight." marvin boyd: "there's plenty of severe weather here. especially in the summertime." marvin boyd: "just fun to watch." alex hoon has grown to love western weather as well. alex hoon: "i used to really love severe weather, but in recent years i've actually learned to love fire weather alot." there's another side to meteorologists too. we don't like to be wrong. angela schilling: "are you competitive? do you like to get it right? mike alger: i'm learning a little bit, if anything this job will teach you humility." western nevada is a unique place to forecast for. shane snyder: "i would say the mountains make it very difficult at times."

challenging, but that's what makes it fun." so if you have a passion for something go for it. if you want to become a meteorologist, unr does have an atmospheric sciences program. be prepared to take lots of math and physics classes, but if you have a passion for it, the sky is the limit. covering the story, angela schilling, channel two news. a new study of global weather patterns over the past 35 years supports earlier scientific predictions the southwestern united states will become drier as atmospheric conditions that typically bring the most rain and snow to the region become more rare. the research supported by the national science foundation concludes that what's now considered a normal year of precipitation in the southwest is drier than it used to be. the scientists emphasize the new data doesn't prove climate change is responsible for increasing frequency and duration of drought. the study was published

if you're just joining us let's catch you up on the big story we covered at 5.... the nevada highway patrol is putting extra troopers out on the roads during the super bowl to look for impaired drivers. failed traffic stops and speeding are just a few of the signs nhp is on the look out for. this weekend is one of the times of the year when they see an increased amount of d-u-i's. troopers are also passing along tips for you to stay safe. they suggest you designate a driver before the drinking starts....whether it be a friend, taxi, ride share or public transportation. you can also report drunk drivers to nhp by dialing 6-4-7. because if you are the person behind the wheel intoxicated, there will be consequences. sgt. eddie bowers, nhp: "if they get stopped and the officer believes in fact that they have been drinking, using drugs, or something of that nature, they can expect after a field sobriety testing and things to

good tips to remember because troopers also tells us that a dui will cost you thousands of dollars, a trip to jail and a suspended driver's license for at least 90 days. for those who don't usually gamble, the super bowl is the one day non-gamblers, throw down a few bucks to get in on the action. sports books are getting ready for the big crowd of people that don't come to the casino often. steve mikkelson- "if you're not going to make a wager on the big game, you're not going to make a wager on anything. this is the one event everyone pays attention to." the proposition bets are especially popular with wagers such as "will the first player to score a touchdown have an odd or even jersey number?" for the more experienced gambler, the super bowl is a time to not just have a good time, but to score at the sports book.

you may have noticed many people wearing red today... and there's good reason. this national wear red day aims to raise awareness for women and heart disease, which affects about 40-million women in the u-s. studies show cardiac rehabilitation has big benefits after a heart attack... but as kristen remington found out - many women aren't doing it. ...running on treadmill... 31 year old jessica kennington says it took her days to realize she was having a heart attack.

pain, then eventually chest pain. "it was pretty constant and i had trouble catching my breath." as part of her recovery, her cardiologist referred her for cardiac rehabilitation - which involves exercise training and counseling to get heart patients back on their feet. "women have not been referred as much as men to go to cardiac rehab. its disappointing the problem is also women who are prescribed cardiac rehab are less likely to go than men who go to cardiac rehab." dr. mary ann mclaughlin of mount sinai hospital says cardiac rehab not only helps patients recover it can also help patients make healthy lifestyle changes and avoid ending up in the hospital . women-only programs can also have even bigger benefits. new research shows women who do their rehab with other women can have less depression and anxiety. "there is a very strong benefit psychologically of people to bond during this rehab phase and learn that they are not alone." jessica has some family history of heart disease but says doctors are not sure why she had a heart attack so young. after her heart

"absolutely! i was afraid of anything where i could feel my heart beat." six months later she says cardiac rehab has helped her conquer her fears and get back to her life. covering health watch, kristen remington, channel 2 news. heart disease is the number one killer of women in the u-s. one woman dies every minute. and that staggering statistic is why ladies from all over northern nevada came together today - to go red for women. the 12th annual "go red for women" luncheon attracted a big crowd at the downtown reno ballroom. it was a festive, but also serious event -- with women being encouraged to educate themselves about the warning signs of heart disease. "to inspire women to take care of themselves so that they can take care of the ones they love. one in three women will die of heart disease and yet 80-percent of it is preventable." since the "go red for women"

the colts an nfl golden football... to welcome them to the super bowl high school honor roll community. the program includes high schools with alumni who were on the active roster of any super bowl team... you are looking at video from back in december when truckee alum ted popson presented them with their football... popson was a tight end for the 49ers in their super bowl 29 win over the chargers. as for carano... he was roger staubach's backup in two superbowls... their win over the broncos in super bowl 12... and their loss to the steelers in super bowl 13... the honored schools receive an nfl character curriculum and are eligible for grants from the nfl foundation to help support their football programs... you will hear more from glenn carano on this program later tonight. -wooster taking on damonte ranch and early on its the colts with the steal....and basket. -later the mustangs with the
