with the progress, kristen. we're standing right in the middle of their work area. there's about a mile of construction to the north of us -- and another mile to the south. and as you can see -- there's been a lot of changes here the past few months. trucks, excavator, dozer it might not look like it -- but someday, this chunk of land on the rosewood lakes golf course will have a bridge on it. one of five on phase two of the southeast connector. garth "the power poles that you see off in the distance, that's on the left side of the roadway or the eastside of the roadway. so, we're just going to follow on through here, going fairway to fairway, trying to avoid as many of the wetlands as possible." that roadway is starting to take shape on a two-mile stretch between clean water way and mira loma drive. oksol says the 20-17. garth "a lot of earth work, a lot of environmental care is being done and then we do have two winters within that time period, that obviously, we have to slow down a little bit for what we're doing with construction." up to 250 people will work on the southeast connector during

right now -- the crew is down to about a hundred on a daily basis. garth "obviously, when there's snow on the ground, and we get a lot of moisture, we've got to change our operations a little bit, but the nice thing is that we're still able to do construction throughout the winter time and that's just helping keep people employed." the project is expected to improve water flow and quality in the steamboat creek -- and create an 80-acre wetland complex. crews have already removed nearly 470 million pounds of invasive weeds and infested soil -- and 3.8 million pounds of trash. garth "that was anything from old box spring mattresses, car parts, barrels of stuff, just a tremendous amount of trash was out here, laying underneath the weeds that people may not see from the road." the project also includes a 10- foot-wide multi-use path -- but oksol says the new six-lane road will have the biggest impact on traffic. garth "it's going to really greatly alleviate congestion, not only that we have today on a lot of the arterial roadways that we have down in south reno, but also to help get traffic out of sparks." the public can learn more about

members of the community before casting their vote. for those wanting to participate, you must be registered as a member of a party. democrats have same day registration, while the republicans require voters to register by february 13th. the democrats will caucus on february 20th, while the republicans are scheduled for february 23rd. democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders will reportedly visit reno this weekend. "acting in community together in organizing northern nevada" -- or actionn -- says sanders will attend its "real solutions to real problems" summit at the university of nevada's jot travis buidling starting at 8:30 a-m saturday. organizers say the event is almost full - but they still have a few spots open. and republican presidential candidate carly fiorina will be visting northern nevada next week. fiorina will be speaking at the 2nd flood ballroom of the atlantis - a week from tomorrow - for an event being organized by the washoe republican women.

while police searched for someone suspected of stealing a vehicle in the area. police tried to stop the vehicle near stead boulevard late this morning, but the driver took off. officers eventually found the vehicle near mt. baldy, but the suspect had already left the scene... police with the help of raven helicopter searched for him but called off the search after 1 p- m. investigators have not released a description of the suspect. if you know anything that can help police... call or text secret witness. and the washoe county school district says a handgun was confiscated on the spanish springs high school campus today. the school's prinicpal sent out a voicemail alerting parents about what happened and saying police are still investigating. she also encouraged parents and students to report suspicious activity to school secret witness at 3-2-9 66-66. and reno police say they have arrested a woman in connection with a robbery at a convenience store in stead on sunday. police say around 2-30 in the

money from the clerk at the jacksons store on stead boulevard, showing the clerk a gun in her waistband. she left the scene in a silver 4-door passenger car. detectives say they located the vehicle in stead and detained the driver. she was identified as 18-year-old kassandra portillo. she admitted to the sunday robbery and was charged with robbery with a deadly weapon. the district attorney's office is warning people about a scam - involving someone claiming to be an actual d-a investigator... and requesting payments for fees for failing to appear in court. the d-a's ofice does not charge people for services related to court appearances... and does not call asking for money. still to come on channel 2 news at 6-30 the city of reno now has it's own license plate. we'll tell you how the new
