south lake tahoe is hoping to create a more successful mountain resort community with the highway 50 revitalization project. tonight transportation officials answered questions about possible construction being considered to make downtown more pedestrian friendly. amanda ketchledge attended the community meeting and joins us live in the newsroom with more. amanda-- landon-- residents and business owners weren't allowed to comment tonight, but they were allowed to submit their questions to get answered about this project and how it will impact the environment and the economy. "we would have to put together a variety of funding sources." funding for this 75 million dollar project was just one of the questions raised by community members. jenna palacio, south lake tahoe resident: "i like the project but i have concerns about low income housing, things like addressing our public

this outdoor recreation town that we're striving to become." the tahoe transportation district is hoping to approve one of four development options...with the goal of creating a main street in south shore. carl hasty, district manager tahoe transportation district: "those five lanes that go through the core right now would actually be able to be narrowed up, bring the sidewalks out, make it a whole lot more pedestrian orientated." a possible roundabout at this intersection is just one option considered for more mountain and lake access. but carl hasty, the district manager for the transportation district says the potential reroute could displace residents in outdated homes. carl hasty, district manager tahoe transportation district: "the project is going to require right away acquisition on the california side, which means a lot of old housing that's there would have to be acquired. we would be responsible for replacing much of that, as well as relocating residents in there." hasty says new workforce, senior and commercial space would be added. but one resident likes the concept of changing the roads for more safety. steve tancredy, south lake tahoe resident: "i'm looking for this project to relieve all the traffic off the residential streets."

today u-s attorney general loretta lynch announced the department of justice is suing the city. lynch: "today the department of justice is filing a lawsuit in federal district court against the city of ferguson, missouri alleging a pattern of practice of law enforcement conduct that violates the first, the fourth and the fourteenth amendments of the constitution and federal civil rights laws. for months the department of justice negotiated a deal with the city of ferguson - over reforms to its police force and municipal court system. but yesterday... the ferguson city council voted to change the terms of the deal.. prompting today's d-o-j filing. a spokesman for the city says officials have not seen the lawsuit.. and that they plan to comment tomorrow. two sheriff's deputies in maryland were killed in the line of duty today.. after authorities say shots were exchanged in and around a shopping center there. the shooting started inside a panera restaurant about 20 miles northeast of baltimore - after a deputy responded to a call about

inside. investigators believe the deputy was targeted because of his uniform. a second deputy caught up with the suspect - who has since been identified as 67-year-old david brian evans and was wanted on several warrants - after he left the restaurant. they exchanged gunfire and evans was killed. both deputies were rushed to the hospital, but died from injuries sustained in the shooting. the slain officers were 30 and 16- year veterans of the agency. no bystanders were hurt. today the senate approved new sanctions against north korea. the sanctions are meant to punish the rogue nation for recent nuclear and ballistic missile tests... as well as for their cyber- security attacks and human rights abuses. the bill passed with a unanimous vote today. senators ted cruz and marco rubio even took a break from the campaign trail to sign the bill. the legislation is now going to the house before it gets to president obama. still to come on channel 2 news
