"this is channel 2 news, coverage you can count on" "so right now we're right on time and right on budget." the fountainhouse complex will house ten multi family apartment units in the heart of victorian square. we have the latest on the development and the impact the housing is expected to have on the city of sparks. as money watch tops channel two news at 5:30. good evening i'm landon miller. kristen is off tonight, thank you for joining us. we first told you about the city of sparks approving the fountainhouse apartment project in may of last year. and the construction process began on the 236 unit complex back in september. ryan canaday joins us live in victorian square near the apartment buildings. ryan what's the latest on the

landon developers say they are about 20% along in their work. on one side of the street construction workers are working on the foundation for the buildings. and on this side of the street, they have just completed their first building frame.. with nine more like this one still to come. we think the area is going to be a dramatic change, it will be a district unto itself within the community, it'll be a place wh en we get done with the stores and shops and other ammenities, that people will want to come back and return to." the club house for this 40 million dollar housing project is expected to be open sometime in may. with the first building hopefully coming to completion soon after in june. from that point forward, developers hope to finish at least one building a month. developers say since construction began, business in victorian square has been

and they expect this boom too feel even more evident once there are nearly 500 people living in the sparks downtown district. "one of the goals of the city of sparks as well as us is to energize and populate downtown sparks, so things happen and that's what's really going on here." developers hope to have construction completed by the beginning of next year. covering money watch live in sparks, ryan canaday channel two news. it's been two years and one month since the ascuaga family sold the nugget to global gaming and hospitality. and in the next few months -- the property will change hands again. paul nelson joins us live at the nugget after talking to the current and future owner. paul -- so why are they selling? it was all about the right circumstances, kristen. the current owners say they had multiple offers but had no intention of selling the nugget -- but marnell gaming made an

the new owners say they're excited about the future. dice rolling the nugget is one of the areas largest casino resorts -- and now marnell gaming is betting big on the sparks property. marnell "i want to make the nugget a leader in this market." marnell says he's had his eyes on this market for quite awhile. in the last ten years, the company has invested about 70-million dollars into it's two properties in laughlin. marnell "we try to invest a lot of capital and give people opportunity for growth and i think if you look back in the places we've been, that's our history of what we've done." "you can see the success that we've had so far." the current owners say the nugget's success is growing -- and that this is not a sale of distress -- but a purchase of opportunity. carlton "i believe he is buying at exactly the right time. if i was in his shoes, this is the time i would buy it because even though we've been successful, we're still on the upswing and he's buying it at the right point of that trend."

improvements have gone into the nugget during the last two years, including upgrades to the casino and sports book -- and the arrival of gilley's saloon. carlton "we've put a lot of effort into making this into a competitive property that is sustainable for the benefit of employees and community." roulette from the casino to the atrium pool -- the nugget has about 1.5 million square feet of space. marnell says he'll eventually renovate 800 rooms in the west tower, the convention area, and the casino and showroom. marnell "we don't anticipate a lot of quick moves. this is long term. anybody, i think, that knows us, we don't sell much. we're usually buying things or building things." about 13-hundred people work here, and marnell says the change of ownership won't affect any of them. as for special events like the rib cookoff and star spangled sparks -- he says they'll continue, and they could add even more activities.

academy recruits say it's worth all the blood, sweat and tears. and as kristen remington found out... there were a lot of tears on onetraining day in particular. ...recruit being pepper sprayed... "alpha, beta, gamma!" gasping for breath, the training exercise continues. while coughing and gagging, recruits must push through the pain of being pepper sprayed... and then accurately use their weapon. ana leyva watches the others - ahead of her turn. "give them verbals. please don't move!" and then, it's time for ana to experience a vulnerability - she hopes she'll never have to endure again. "the pepper spray was definitely the worst day of the academy." "fight through it leyva! let's go, leyva!" "you can't stop your eyes from swelling up. you can't stop the pepper spray from getting into your lungs. so it's really difficult." "knees, knees!" although her senses were

memory loss is a scary thing as we age. but researchers are recognizing a trend in dementia cases. kristen remington has more in tonight's health watch. researchers say the rate of new dementia cases may be declining even though people are living longer. doctors studied data from heart patients over 40 years. the research posted in the new england journal of medicine showed the decrease in dementia was more noticeable in highly educated people diagnosed with heart disease. by 2025 an estimated 7 million people will be living with alzheimer's disease. british experts say new guidelines that recommend no more than 5 pints of beer a week - may not decrease alcohol consumption, but could change social attitudes about drinking.

"alcohol and cancer" searches on google after the new guidelines were released compared to the same time last year. and, we all know that being a couch potato isn't good for your body but new research says it may also lead to smaller brains later in life. more than 15 hundred people were given treadmill tests to determine their heart rate. doctors found people whose heart rate and blood pressure went up after exercise were more likely to develop accelerated brain aging. let's check in on the roads with our traffic reporter chaison dean in the alice 96 point 5 traffic center. look out for an accident on i80 west and virginia and another southbound of 580 and 180 northbound. so expect extra delays in those areas as crews will be on the scene. you're also going to want to expect some heavy traffic slowdowns on 580 northbound from the south
