tonight we have an update on a story we bright you last fall... the desert research institute in reno has been working on its very own weather model for a while now. since september, it's been able to test the model for accuracy - to help refine it. angela schilling joins us live in the newsroom with more. angela? kristen, while the folks at dri have a long ways to go, they

i last spoke with them in the fall. both on a business front and research side of the project. the model indeed looks a little bit different now. if all goes well, they hope to have a business partner within the next few months. brian speicher: "everyone wants to know first and foremost how accurate you are." especially when your new model forecasts the weather. brian speicher: "over about a four month time we looked at the performance of the model over reno and las vegas and compared to really recognizable names. in weather." in december the results came in, showing their in house model could compete with the rest. the test compares high and low temperatures to the observed value out at the airport. you have to be within three degrees of the actual temperature to be accurate. preliminary results shows an accuracy rate of between seventy six and eighty two percent of the time. now that we have some results, it's time to refine the product and make it better. brian speicher: "since we last spoke we brought in four or five different people

valley and other far reaching technology beds." incorporating local characteristics is one way to improve the model. accounting for the urban heat island effect is an example. the heat island effect essentially makes temperatures warmer in metro areas. brian speicher: "not just the weather but also urban science it's environmental science, it's atmospheric science, and it's lots of people working on one really large concept." just by looking at the model i can notice some changes too. the model is much faster and easier to work with. you can now loop the images like a video, opposed to going through different static images. brian speicher: "lot more work to do in refining the platform and tweaking it in the ways we need it to." but speicher and the rest of the team is pleased with how the model is coming along. it will be interesting to see how well the final version of the model does in the years to come. one other goal is to implement more weather instruments and satellite images to the project. before you make an accurate forecast, you have to have an
