tonight we have an update on a story we bright you last fall... the desert research institute in reno has been working on its very own weather model for a while now. since september, it's been able to test the model for accuracy - to help refine it. angela schilling joins us live in the newsroom with more. angela? kristen, while the folks at dri have a long ways to go, they

i last spoke with them in the fall. both on a business front and research side of the project. the model indeed looks a little bit different now. if all goes well, they hope to have a business partner within the next few months. brian speicher: "everyone wants to know first and foremost how accurate you are." especially when your new model forecasts the weather. brian speicher: "over about a four month time we looked at the performance of the model over reno and las vegas and compared to really recognizable names. in weather." in december the results came in, showing their in house model could compete with the rest. the test compares high and low temperatures to the observed value out at the airport. you have to be within three degrees of the actual temperature to be accurate. preliminary results shows an accuracy rate of between seventy six and eighty two percent of the time. now that we have some results, it's time to refine the product and make it better. brian speicher: "since we last spoke we brought in four or five different people

valley and other far reaching technology beds." incorporating local characteristics is one way to improve the model. accounting for the urban heat island effect is an example. the heat island effect essentially makes temperatures warmer in metro areas. brian speicher: "not just the weather but also urban science it's environmental science, it's atmospheric science, and it's lots of people working on one really large concept." just by looking at the model i can notice some changes too. the model is much faster and easier to work with. you can now loop the images like a video, opposed to going through different static images. brian speicher: "lot more work to do in refining the platform and tweaking it in the ways we need it to." but speicher and the rest of the team is pleased with how the model is coming along. it will be interesting to see how well the final version of the model does in the years to come. one other goal is to implement more weather instruments and satellite images to the project. before you make an accurate forecast, you have to have an

welcome back... today is the first day of a new, lifesaving program in the truckee meadows. it's called, "remembering when." john potter shows us what sparks firefighters and red cross workers will be doing to save more lives, especially those of a certain age group. sparks fire marshal bob king has a soft spot for fire's most defenseless victims: seniors, and children. you don't have to search far to find an example. january 2006, when 2 teenaged girls died in a sparks family home with no smoke detectors. the fire started downstairs.the girls could not escape from upstairs. king: "that is what really prompted us to say, 'hey, we need to go out in the community and educate about smoke alarms.'" that was the beginning of project safe.which distributed 35 hundred smoke detectors, to 13 hundred sparks homes. remembering when...targets seniors. king: "remembering when program

older adults is perfect ." john: "developed to help older folks live safely at home, remembering when is centered around 16 safety messages. 8 have to do with fire prevention, 8 have to do with preventing falls. when you look at the numbers, its really a no-brainer. seniors face a lot of hazards just by being home." king: "falls seem to be a big one that we respond to, almost on a daily basis." ehrman: "it's a huge problem. you know, when we get old we just don't have the stability that we used to have when we were younger." danel lipparelli has seen plenty when it comes to fires, like the one that recently chased a 78-year old woman out of her home. lipparelli: "it seems like they're always in the middle of the night. and she was evacuated...standing out in the driveway." among the program's 16 safety messages: take your time moving. clear walking areas. improve lighting. to prevent fires, stay in the kitchen when cooking. plan an escape, and get smoke alarms.

chris....:"you have 712 delegates you have to get 2,382 of the 4,763 votes." let me boil that down for you. there are a limited number of state delegates at the national convention and the nominee has to get more than half of them. so the party sprinkles in a handful of party leaders to vote for the interest of the party. chris:"or the country." eric:"it's a balancing of interest in the party." chris wicker is one of 8 super delegates for nevada's democratic party. in fact he's the only one in washoe county. chris: the dnc calls them unpledged delegates but i guess super delegate has more flash . i kinda like it ha ha ha." being a super delegate means his vote is up to him. erik:"they get to go and they get to vote for whoever they want." the other 35 delegates... who will rise up through the caucuses this weekend will be

candidate. the super delegates can pledge their votes ahead of time...which could definitely change the political polls. but could they swing a nomination? chris:"it could swing a very very close national nomination...15% it not a negligible number." so it is possible....but if the rest of the delegates show solidarity....the experts say it's pretty unlikely. eric:" they are a collection but not the majority ..far from it." say the state sent 23 delegates plus 8 super delegates. eric: so if i win 23 and the super delegates don't like me i win 23-8 and if i do that in every state the delegates go home mad but i go home with the nomination." we should note that the republican party elects all of it's delegates through the caucuses and has no super delegates. in fact today adam kahn with the county republican party said...funny but the republican party is actually more democratic than the democratic party. one person...one vote...no exceptions. covering campaign 2016 erin

migraines can take their toll... but as they're about to start, there may be some non-drug related ways to manage the disorder. what one doctor does in tonight's health watch. medications can alleviate migraine symptoms, but there is no cure. "there's not one thing we can do to end the migraines for all time at this point. but there are a lot of different options that we can offer - and we can hopefully and most likely get you to a better place than where you are." dr carolyn bernstein runs a headache center in boston. she also suffers with migraines, so she's exploring alternative ways to manage the disease. ... one thing she's come up with:

exercise ideal for migraine sufferers, bernstein says, because it's low-impact...there's no pounding. and it's possible cycling could have a beneficial effect on headaches. "when we exercise, a lot of the time we feel better afterwards. we get all kinds of neurotransmitters going in our brain that can decrease pain levels." if you suffer with constant migraines, too - renown institute's headache program evaluates the disorder and treats some conditions with botox - to minimize the pain of chronic headaches. to schedule an appointment, i've posted the number on our website k-t-v-n dot com. just click the health watch icon. let's check in on the roads with our traffic reporter chaison dean in the alice 96 point 5 traffic center. look out from some heavy traffic on 580 to 395 northbound from moana to oddie as well as on 180 eastbound near the nugget. and luckily there arent any accidents or incidents to report at the moment so please continue to drive safe out there. i'm chaison dean and that's your traffic.
