different scientists with different fields of expertise who work at dri. hans: "and most of the people do not know about each other and didn't work together." but through the virtual fire research center they are starting to delve into other discplines when it comes to fire research. just like a machine where each part has a different role and each part has to work together in order for the machine to work properly. hans: "vera here is an organic chemist, an area i don't know anything about. i'm an optical physicist and have joined together for projects funded by nasa and the national science foundation." vera: "it's a huge benefit for us." they each have their own separate lab for their own discplines. but they also share the burn lab now. in the burn lab they have a new instrument for vera to use for her organic chemistry. it works in tandem with the burn chamber itself. which has been around for a couple years now. hans: "fires are very important

aspects are related to both organic chemistry and chemical compounds and smoke. but they are also related to to particle physics." the organic chemistry side will help us understand anything from how deep particles can penetrate into the lungs to the effect smoke and haze has on our vision. the new virtual research center also brings together ecologists and hydrologists. they've been collaborating since the fall. vera: "so we will work together much more over the next few years." more than ten million acres of land were scorched last year in the united states from wild fires. a number the new fire research center in reno hopes to lower. covering the big story live, anglea schilling, channel two news. if you're just joining us let's catch you up on the big story we covered at 5.... with less than a day before nevada's democratic caucus begins... the campaigns are pulling out all the stops. former president bill clinton
