>> we were kind of driving through medians, driving through the lawn, speeding along and a then finally once he came to a stop, i jumped out of the car and ran away. >> reporter: police say just hours later, that same man jason brian dalton began a series of random shootings. the first victim was an unidentified woman at the meadows townhomes on theom outskirts of kalamazoo were shot multiple times and is expected to survive. approximately four hours later and eight miles away, 53 year old richard smith and his 17 year old son tyler were fatally shot while looking at cars at the seely ford kia dealership. 15 minutes later, five people were gunned down in their vehicles in the parking lot of aot cracker barrel restaurant alongacke interstate 94. among the victims there were mary lou nye, 62. mary jo nye, 60, dorothy brown, 74, and barbara hawthorne, 68. a 14 year old passenger in oneng

condition. it was just after midnight when c a senior sheriff's deputy spotted the 45 year old's car leaving the parking lot of a downtown kalamazoo bar. dalton surrendered without a fight. >> that we have a suspect in custody is a testament to the work of these people here in this room. their departments and the many officers that serve this community. >> reporter: cbs news has learned that law enforcement has multiple crime scene surveillance videos, some described as graphic and disgusting. >> there is no connection that we're aware of between the three different sets of victims to each other or any of the victims to mr. dalton. they appear to have been chosen -- at random. >> reporter: uber's chief.

>> glor: finally tonight, you may have seen that dramatic video of a sightseeing helicopter crashing last week in hawaii, now we're hearing from the people who not onlyo witnessed the crash but raced to the rescue. here's chris martinez. >> reporter: this video capturess the moment a tourist helicopter plunged from the sky. what it doesn't show is the daring rescue that came after shawn winrich put down his camera. >> a bunch of people jumped in the water and tried to help the survivors. >> reporter: among the rescuers, 57-year-old navy veteran juan valerio, he and his family were planning to visit the pearl harbor memorial when he witnessed the crash and instinct took over. >> i ran in with all my clothes and swam out to the helicopter. >> reporter: he found a woman and as he swam with her... >> she started yelling, "please help my son, he's only 15 years s

assembly in 2000, and the nevada senate in 2012. people who knew her said she will be greatly missed. "she'll be missed in the fight for education dollars and capital construction. with the school board capital bond issue coming up, her voice will be missed." "i used to joke that she was my 'caucus mom'. she didn't like hearing that; she perferred "caucus sister'. "she taught me a lot. how to be a better legislator, and ultimately, i think she set an incredible model for how to serve constituents. she was an amazing public servant." governor brian sandoval released a statement. -quote- "today we remember her legacy as a true nevadan with a fierce devotion to her constituents and state, particularly to public education and the children of nevada. i will personally miss her greatly and nevada will miss her leadership," -end quote-
