services. derek "because there's so much stuff there for students to use, that's probably what they're most excited about, seeing computers available and collaboration rooms for them to work in. that's something that they're really excited about seeing." various student services used to be located in six different buildings around campus. now they are right here, in the pennington student achievement center. mariah "the fact that they have the writing center and the math center all in one place now, you don't have to find certain buildings, i think that's a really good thing." it also has an advising center, career studio, and scholars programs, as well as a disabilty veterans center. about 17-hundred veterans attend the university onevada. eric "we specialize and we lead in collaboration. so, it's getting our veterans up for success, and that's what our main goal for our veterans is." how about you guys. whohoo! this genetics class is in one of two brand new state of the art classrooms -- set up in a non- traditional way. derek "they are designed in kind of a 360-degree method, which

every wall of the classroom. it also allows students to put their own laptop screens up on the walls." other things are set up for students to relax -- like the meditation and reflection room and the social stairs. corinne "you're at the social steps, talking to other people or if you even wanted to, you could probably get a lot of studying done here, too." this building was supposed to open last month -- in time for the spring semester but they decided rather than to rush it, to take their time and do it right. there's still plenty of construction on campus -- including a health center and the great basin dorm next door. covering school watch live, paul nelson, channel 2 news. will host a rally at the rose ballroom at the nugget tomorrow, starting at noon. for much more on the campaigning, stay tuned for channel 2 news at 6:30. in money watch... on average, americans upgrade their smart phones every 18 months, but that doesn't mean your old device is worthless. ky sisson spoke with a local cell phone recycling company and has more on how you can safely get top dollar for your smart phone. when university of nevada student matthew sterrett and business partner edwardo morales started "sell your used iphones dot com", they entered an incredibly competitive, 742 million dollar industry. but while big players such such as gazelle and usell.com dominate the market, this local business is getting a piece of the action. sterrett- "we saw that it was difficult to sell an iphone or ipad online and we saw that the cash rewards for it weren't that high and we kind of set out to fix it." through advertising on google,

and they are working to do just that by keeping their prices competitive and growing their reputation. covering money watch, ky sisson, channel 2 news. also in money watch... gas prices are now two dollars a gallon on average in the silver state. according to gas buddy to com... the average price of regular unleaded contines to fall... down 8 cents in the last week. nationwide, the average prices dropped just under 2 cents in the past week... and is now a dollar 71. gas buddy expects prices to stay low on the west coast in the wholesale gas prices. in cone zone... n-dot says it expects to remove a large boulder from u-s 50 tomorrow morning. the boulder rolled onto the highway in the glenbrook area of lake tahoe saturday night at around 6:30. n-dot estimates that the boulder is nine feet wide and six feet tall. n-dot plans to contract

nats: outdoors sounds the holiday season's hot toy is being linked to dozens of fires in 24 states since december...resulti ng in millions of dollars in property damage. this home in nashville was destroyed by fire last month. and this family's christmas celebration was ruined. johnson: "the toy was just sitting right here on the floor and it just blew up. and sparks and fire started coming from the toy." the consumer product safety commission issued newly updated, voluntary safety standards to manufacturers, retailers and importers. it says boards that do not comply pose "...an unreasonable risk of fire to consumers...." who "...risk serious injury or death if their hover boards ignite and burn." kean: "this is really a shot across the bow from the consumer product safety commission saying that, if you are bringing product in, and you're not meeting these standards, we're going to consider them defective." nats: bang the fires appear to stem from excess heat... generated by the boards' lithium batteries. burns: "you can clearly look at this device and see the fire started inside the device." nats: zoom

attacks of diarrhea. i was in the bathroom every two minutes." she picked up a life-threatening infection called "c-diff" while recovering in the hospital. "you're not eating, youre dehydrated and losing tremendous amount of weight." it's estimated 1 in 25 patients contract an infection from the hospital. and tens of thousands die every year from those infections. betsy mccaughey founded the commitee to reduce infection deaths. she says patients need to be pro-active and protect themselves. most importantly make sure visitors and doctors wash their hands before coming near you. "its hard to do, people are intimidated by those white coats and nurses uniforms but you can be saving your life by asking them to do that." also doctors should wipe their stethescopes in between patients. research shows wiping down surfaces around the hospital bed can reduce some infections by as much as 80 percent. other steps patients can take: choose a hospital and surgeon with low

and days before surgery, bathe with chlorhexidine soap, which can remove harmful bacteria you may be carrying on your skin. brighton calls her experience a big wakeup call. "now, here's sports director garrett dearborn, with channel 2 sports" the reno bighorns are playing really well this season in fact with only about a month and half left on their schedule and they sit atop the western conference standings.... dallas colodny went out to practice this afternoon to find out their what the secret to their success is. when you go to a reno bighorns game you can pretty much expect them to break the century mark every time out. they are averaging 122 points a game this

from 134 points a game last season... either way that is still a lot of points because in comparison their nba affiliate the sacramento kings average 107 points a game. but the bighorns have already eclipsed last season's win total and the guys say their improvement has come on the defensive end. "we have just become a lot more clear and consistent in what we are going to do and i think that helps with the buy in from the players they like to know exactly how we are going to defend certain actions. we have also scrapped the press this year so we have just given up a lot less uncontested shots at the rim which has certainly helped our defense." "i think that has really made the difference this year. last year we scored a lot of points, this year we score a lot of points but this year we keep the other team from scoring points too and you see the difference in our record." while most of these guys obviously want to get to or back to the nba, they say while they are down here in reno
