canaday is live at the carson nugget in carson city... and paul nelson is live in the studio after attending a rally donald trump held in sparks earlier today... let's start with erin...it's pretty big day for republicans here in nevada right? it really is a big day for republicans here in nevada. you're right about that. doors are just beginning to open but check out this line. there are 20 precincts cuacusing here at hug high school tonight which is just one of more than 2 dozen locations. but organizers say they're ready to find out how nevada's republicans feel about the candidates.

been growing since. we want to show you just what i mean.. just take a look at how many people there are, organizers say they expect close to 1500 people to be in and out at today's caucus. "the easiest thing about ours is that you can vote and leave we would like them all to stay for the precinct meetings but a lot of people work, they're just getting off work, they have kids at home it's just not something they're ready to do." nearly seventy people are volunteering here today at the caucus inside the nugget. organizers here in carson city have even made arrangements for representatives of the presidential candidates to be here to speak with today's participants. once people cast their ballot for the candidate of their choice they will then be given the option to leave or stay for the pricinct meetings those meetings will be held at 6pm and it will be at that time that they'll be electing delegates to go to the county convention. marti cockell-"we've tried to make it as pleasant as possible, i'm going to lead everyone

the paper work and i'm going to try to make it fun and not complicated." if you are registered republican and you would like to come out and caucus, organizers and volunteers will be here at the nugget until 9 pm tonight. covering campaign 20-16 live in carson city, ryan canaday channel two news the g-o-p frontrunner campaigned at the nugget in sparks today. most polls show donald trump with a large lead in nevada -- some by more than 25 points. paul nelson was at today's rally and joins us live in the studio -- paul. kristen -- trump talked a lot about national issues like immigration, the economy, and terrorism. but he really stayed away from issues unique to the silver state. still, his overall message seemed to resonate with his supporters -- heading into tonight's caucus. trump "like at 5:30, today, you know where you're gonna be, right?" donald trump was center-stage at the nugget. and after encouraging people to get out to vote, it didn't take long for the g-o-p frontrunner to go after one of his rivals.

tougher people than ted cruz. he's like a baby compared to some of the people i have to deal with. he is like a little baby. soft, weak little baby by comparison, but for lying he's the best i've ever seen." trump emphasized his experience as a businessman -- talking about economic issues like trade, jobs and taxes. trump "we're gonna make our business stronger, better than ever. we're lowering taxes for businesses, big league. we pay the highest taxes in the world. i don't know if you know that." more than 3-thousand people were on-hand to listen to the presidential hopeful's speech, that included his pro-second amendment stance and preventing mass shootings like the one in paris. trump "if one of you characters were in that room and you had your gun around your ankle or along your waist, it would have been whole different story." he also re-enforced his position on illegal immigration and building a wall along the mexican border. despite that, he thinks he'll win the hispanic vote in nevada. trump "first of all, they're here legally and they don't want

and second of all, and more importantly, they know i'm going to bring jobs in." trump says national defense, and providing proper equipment to the military is another high priority. trump "we're going to get the stuff we want. we're going to make our military so big and so strong and so powerful, nobody, nobody is gonna mess with us." most of people in the crowd are trump supporters. others are undecided and came to see if he could gain their support. tracy "i can really see why there's this big movement for him. he had the biggest crowd today and i get it." mark "he's a doer. he's not a talker and that's proven by his reputation, what he's accomplished." trump did not attack marco rubio -- saying that's because rubio hasn't attacked him. meanwhile, he accused hillary clinton of committing crimes and says she does not have the strength or stamina to be president. covering campaign 20-16 live in the studio, paul nelson, channel 2 news. and texas senator ted cruz continued campaigning in the silver state today... with campaign stops in fernley...

in crime beat... the department of parole and probation is asking the public for help finding a man who was convicted of stealing a vehicle and assaulting someone. authorities say michael jackson was convicted of taking a motor vehicle in september of 2014... and then a week after that - he was convicted of severely beating and robbing someone. he stopped reporting to the department of parole and probation in april of 2015. sgt. lisa pierrott/nevada department of public safety: "in addition to the violence of his crime he's a documented gang member. and so he's considered to be dangerous, we urge the

personally but to report his whereabouts so that we can respond. jackson is described as five foot 10... 175 pounds... with black hair and brown eyes. he also goes but the name michael jones. he if know where he is... call the fugitive apprehension unit at 684-2644. and the nevada highway patrol has a larceny suspect in custody and is looking for another after a pursuit last night ended in reno. troopers say they were notified of the pursuit by washoe county deputies just after 5 last night... and pursued a silver nissan sedan at speeds of upwards of 100 miles an hour before crashed near meadowood mall and eventually stopped at the grand sierra resort. that's when two suspects fled the car. 23-year-old dominic gonzalez was later arrested and faces several charges including possession of stolen property... reckless driving and driving without a license. the other suspect was last seen getting into a maroon passenger car with silver rims. that suspect is described as a

president obama unveiled his proposal to close the detention center at guantanamo bay, cuba. the plan would fulfill a campaign promise the president made back in 2008. but the president is getting stiff opposition from some in congress. mark albert is at the white house with more. president obama announced his latest proposal to close the detention facility at guantanamo bay in cuba. president obama: "it's counterproductive to our fight against terrorists because they use it as propaganda in their efforts to recruit moreover, keeping this facility open is contrary to our values." there are 91 detainees left at guantanamo. with a third cleared for transfers to other countries, 56 would be moved to the continental us... including accused 9-11 mastermind khalid sheikh mohammed.

welcome back... in the high-stakes battle over replacing justice antonin scalia on the supreme court, a new poll shows 56-percent of americans want the senate to hold hearings and vote on the president's choice to fill the vacancy. as john potter shows us, both sides of the senate are still in a stalemate. biden: "action on a supreme court nomination must be put off until after the election campaign is over." that's then-senate judiciary committee chairman joe biden--who in 1992 suggested he was just fine with blocking any election year nominees when president george hw bush was in the white house. biden: "president bush should consider following the practice of a majority of his predecessors. and not - and not

welcome back... in health watch... u-s officials are looking into more than a dozen new reports of sexually transmitted cases. several involve pregnant women. the agency says in two of the new cases, the zika virus has been confirmed in women whose only known risk factor was sexual contact with a male partner who had recently traveled to a zika hotbed.

recently traveled to zika- infected areas should use condoms or abstain from sex if their partner is pregnant or if the couple is concerned about transmitting the virus for any reason. meanwhile progress is moving forward on a vaccine for the virus in texas. as omar villafranca found out, scientists at a lab in galveston have been studying the virus for decades. the dirty white powder in this glass vial is the zika virus. "we have a sample of it! heh" doctor robert tesh of the university of texas medical branch at galveston has known about zika since the 1960's. dr. tesh: until the virus really got to brazil and there was a lot of cases, nobody was really interested in zika." omar: "times have changed" dr. tesh: times have changed and now times have changed and we realize how much we don't know" baby crying zika may be linked to the birth defect microcephaly. the condition is marked by abnormally small heads in babies due to stunted brain growth.

brazil is ground zero in the fight against zika. "we got to see the people that were being effected..." where doctor shannan rossi recently traveled and saw first hand.the devistating effects of the virus. "it's heartbreaking and its critical i think." machine whirring the univeristy of texas medical branch is home to one of the worlds largest collection of viruses...nearly 7-thousand samples are stored at the facility. with the focus now on zika, rossi and a team of scientists are working on a quick test to detect the virus in humans, and eventually develop a vaccine. omar: "are we closer to a vaccine?" rossi: "yes, every single day that people like me and my colleagues are on the bench, we're one step closer to the vaccine." the national institutes of health says there could be a zika vaccine by the end of 2017. omar villafranca channel 2 news. arianna: what are the biggest hazards threatening northern nevada? i'm arianna bennett... i'll tell you what emergency managers are most concerned
