to caucus tonight... to decide who they'd like to see as the g-o-p nominee for president. campaign 2016 coverage tops channel 2 news at 5:30. the caucus gets underway in just about 30 minutes from now. good evening i'm landon miller. and i'm kristen remington, thanks for staying with us tonight. let's start with, ryan canaday has been at the nugget for us all day. let's start with ryan can you give us an update? kristen a lot of the same as we told you at 5. the lines are still long, and many people are casting their ballots. but we want to give you a closer look at the process. participants enter through these doors, and that's where volunteers check to make sure

and we'll have caucus coverage all throughout the night... we'll have updated results on our website and on the bottom of your screen as we get them in. and please stay with channel 2 2016 continuing coverage. a team of nevada scientists at the desert research institute have successfully flight tested an autonomous vehicle to seed clouds. the drone is the result of a partnership between d-r-i... drone america and avisight, and it was tested late last month at an f-a-a drone testing site. the drone's eight-rotor design allows for it to carry large payloads, while the advanced software and gps guidance provide the aircraft with self-stabilizing capability and multi-waypoint navigation. the next phase of the project will be to conduct flight planning and test airborne flare

today the nevada department of transportation started removing a boulder that fell on u-s 50 near lake tahoe over the weekend. drilling the boulder the boulder is expected to be fully removed by the end of the day, but sections of roadway damaged by the rockfall will need to be repaved. through the end of the week the roadway in the glenbrook area will remain open in both directions but lanes will be reduced and minor travel delays are to be expected as the roadway is repaved. the boulder smashed onto the highway saturday night, however no one was hurt. washoe county emergency management is in the process of pushing through an update to our region's plans... in case of natural disasters. arianna bennett joins us now live from the newsroom with a look... ari? every five years... fema requires local jurisdictions to put together an updated plan for mitigating hazards. the washoe

today... they took a close look at the biggest vulnerabilities in our area. the top three... are earthquakes... wildland floods. although he says we are not at major risk of flooding right now... it's important to have a plan in place... in case we need emergency federal funding. aaron: "if we did have a major flooding event, and we had damage, the first thing fema asks us is, 'did you go through this type of community planning process?" kenneston says one main priority... is truckee river flood management... specifically assessing storm drains. but they're also looking at reinforcing old buildings to be safer in earthquakes. and-- kenneston says the citizens can be a huge help as well... just by making their own properties as safe as possible. aaron: "if each citizen would take the time to look around their own property, and make their own plans, assemble a disaster supplies kit, kind of stay informed and engaged

have a much safer community." the plan has already been approved by fema... washoe county... and the city of sparks... now it goes to tribal leadership... and the city of reno for approval. covering the story live, arianna bennett, channel 2 news. thank you ari - the veterans of america tell us an apparent copper theft has forced them to temporarily close their over flow shelter in the reno area. volunteers of america northern nevada: "the building was flooding. upon further investigation they realized someone had come in and stripped all the copper from the buildilng. now the location of this shelter is kept secret, so we cannot show you video of the damage but- cashell says that the overflow building does not have power or water at this time, forcing them to close, affecting close to 120 people. the shelter is doing everything they can find another building as quickly as possible. they are asking for the public's help as they search for a new or

welcome back.... in school watch... parents are heading back to class so they can help with homework. it's not just high schoolers needing help. as andi guevara reports... even the parents of kindergartners need a re-fresher! "it starts with addition and subtraction." these moms and dads are learning computer reading skills at parent university. how they're being taught so we can help them better and not get frustrated." school districts across the country- including here in washoe county- offer the classes for free. teachers say they're very popular. this one on long island had more than 60 parents eager to participate. it's not just learning how to use the technology, the way reading and math is taught can be so different for parents, they need a refresher. "what do they call the things with the circles? daughter: the bonds.. the bonds." this school started the classes to help parents learn more about the common core curriculum, which sets national standards for english and math. but now they touch on a variety of topics. marie testa/superintendent, north bellmore school district: we're trying to reach out to parents to say the standard way that we learned is no longer that way. so we need to bring you in with us, bring you into the fold and help you so that you're successful at home in supporting your child that's why parents are prepared to continue their education. jason mangels/parent:

the wolf apck softball team went a perfect 5-0 at the demarini desert classic over the weekend and megan sweet was a big reason for....the senior's been named the mountain west conference player of the week for her efforts. the 2-time all-conference pick was on fire at the plate last week hitting 500 with 3-homers and 9- rbi....she also posted 9assists and more importantly no errors at shortstop....she's the first pack player to get the honor since 2014. and that 5-0 weekend put the wolf pack softball teams win streak at 6-straight games....meaning they sit at 8-2 in the early season. the pack was out at practice for media day today and talked to us about how exciting it is to be off to such a great start. yeah its amazing but you cant just sit there...and look back you gotta look forward to the next day, we have oregon that we can go out and attack, you cant be um you can't settle there's alot of strengths. i
