in washington over the open supreme court seat. arianna bennett joins us now from the newsroom with the story... ari? both the white house and governor sandoval's office won't confirm the story. the governor's office told channel 2 in a statement today: "neither governor sandoval nor his staff has been contacted by or talked to the obama administration regarding any potential vetting for the vacancy on the u.s. supreme court." however-- we do know that the governor met with senator harry reid in washington on monday. senator reid says... he would support a sandoval nomination... but he isn't pushing it with the president. reid: "i've talked to the president. i've talked to his chief of staff many times. i talked to his political guy today. and he should pick who he thinks is the best." reid went on to say-- that he'd prefer a more progressive appointee... but he still had many positive words for nevada's governor. reid: "he's a good person. he

been a tremendously good governor in spite of having to deal with some very big problems there." as for president obama-- he has said he's looking for a nominee with "impeccable legal credentials." and he hopes senate leadership will reconsider its position on blocking a hearing. obama: "my hope and expectation is that once there is an actual nominee, once this is no longer an abstraction, that those on the judiciary committee recognize that their job is to give this person a hearing, to show the courtesy of meeting with them." you may recall that governor sandoval served as a judge for the us district court before he was elected governor. covering the big story live, arianna bennett, channel 2 news. meantime nevada's first in the west caucus results are in the books.... donald trump secured a whopping 46-percent of the votes in last night's g-o-p caucus. finishing in second... was florida senator marco rubio.. with 24 percent of
5:02 pm
senator ted cruz was in third.. with 21 percent. then it's doctor ben carson with 5 percent of the votes... and ohio governor john kasich with 4 percent. the disorganization with both caucuses this year had a lot of voters talking about going back to a primary system. so we sent erin breen out to see what's involved in such a move for the state. for the past week the questions have been hillary or bernie.... trump or cruz...or rubio? and the process of picking those candidates has a lot of people asking a new questions.... caucus or primary???? and a lot of caucus-goers we talked to this week.... republicans and democrats.. agree on their preference there. reece: primary..without a doubt." lee: i'd like to go back to the booth just check in and vote for a nominee." beryl: a primary definitely i just wanna be able to go in and vote!" just going in and voting is a primary. it's run and paid for by the state and it's what we did up until 2008. but our

that gave us no say in selecting the presidential nominee. so senator harry reid lobbied the national democratic party on our behalf - republicans followed suit. eric:"reid got nevada on the list of early states in the nominating process. with him gone..there's nobody in the state with that kind of clout to keep us there if the parties decide to move away from it." both parties had organizational challenges with this caucus. but party officials say the growing pains are worth it to be the first in the west to vote. going to a presidential-only primary in february - in addition to our regular june primary - would take a referendum. and turning it over to the state would cost the parties some control. eric:" for republicans they have to swallow hard to turn this over to the government which does know how to do this right....which i find amazingly ironic." but some caucus-goers are motivated to try.

legislature about going back to a primary." darlene isn't the only one considering that....but it will largely be up to the parties to decide. covering campaign 2016 erin breen channel 2 news. as the republican candidates look ahead to super tuesday, the democrats are still focused on south carolina and today hillary clinton picked up a key endorsement from nevada senator harry reid. sen. reid: "i think the middle class would be better served by hillary. i think my work with her over the years is something i've looked upon with awe. when she was the first lady she started the trend toward doing something about health care." clinton attended a luncheon at south carolina's oldest black sorority alpha kappa alpha this afternoon. meanwhile senator bernie sanders spoke in columbia today and criticized clinton for supporting the welfare reform bill her husband signed in 1996. sen. bernie sanders/ presidential candidate:"i spoke

reform because i thought it was scapegoating people who were helpless, people who were very, very vulnerable. secretary clinton at that time had a very different position on welfare reform, strongly supported it." sanders says his campaign has closed the gap with clinton in the palmetto state and they are not writing it off. and with super tuesday less than a week away, please stay with channel 2 news and "cbs news" for continuing coverage of campaign 2016.
