president obama is moving forward with appointing a supreme court justice... and nevada governor brian sandoval may be on the short list. cbs news has confirmed - from a source close to this process - that the white house is vetting governor sandoval... as a possible pick to replace justice antonin scalia. sandoval would be an unusual pick for a democratic president... and that could shake the stalemate in washington over the open supreme court seat. arianna bennett joins us now from the newsroom with the story... ari? both the white house and governor sandoval's office won't confirm the story. the governor's office told channel 2 in a statement today: "neither governor sandoval nor his staff has been contacted by or talked to the obama administration regarding any potential vetting for the vacancy on the u.s. supreme court." however-- we do know that the governor met with senator harry reid in washington on monday. senator reid says... he would support a sandoval

pushing it with the president. reid: "i've talked to the president. i've talked to his chief of staff many times. i talked to his political guy today. and he should pick who he thinks is the best." reid went on to say-- that he'd prefer a more progressive appointee... but he still had many positive words for nevada's governor. reid: "he's a good person. he has a great record, and he's been a tremendously good governor in spite of having to deal with some very big problems there." as for president obama-- he has said he's looking for a nominee with "impeccable legal credentials." and he hopes senate leadership will reconsider its position on blocking a hearing. obama: "my hope and expectation is that once there is an actual nominee, once this is no longer an abstraction, that those on the judiciary committee recognize that their job is to give this person a hearing, to show the courtesy of meeting

you may recall that governor sandoval served as a judge for the u-s district court before he was elected governor. covering the big story live, arianna bennett, channel 2 news. meantime nevada's first in the west caucus results are in the books.... donald trump secured 46 percent of the votes in last night's g-o-p caucus. finishing in second was florida senator marco rubio.. with 24 percent of the votes. senator ted cruz was in third.. with 21 percent. doctor ben carson with 5 percent of the votes... and ohio governor john kasich with 4 percent. the disorganization with the nevada caucuses has some voters wanting to go back to a primary election instead. that's what we did here in nevada until 2008. but our primary is in june...which gave us no say in selecting a nominee. senator harry reid stepped in to get us in on the early states to caucus.

list of early states in the nominating process. with him gone..there's nobody in the state with that kind of clout to keep us there if the parties decide to move away from it." to go back to a primary would take a referendum and support of the legislature. it would also cost us the candidate visits we've seen this cycle...and push us back to june to vote. and with super tuesday less than a week away, please stay with channel 2 news and "cbs news" on air, online, and on facebook and twitter for continuing coverage of campaign 2016. temperatures will run well above average for the next couple of days as the west coast ridge of high pressure resists the attempts of offshore weather systems to break it down. variable amounts of high cloudiness will still come
