president obama is moving forward with appointing a supreme court justice... and nevada governor brian sandoval may be on the short list. cbs news has confirmed - from a source close to this process - that the white house is vetting governor sandoval... as a possible pick to replace justice antonin scalia. sandoval would be an unusual pick for a democratic president... and that could shake the stalemate in washington over the open supreme court seat. arianna bennett joins us now from the newsroom with the story... ari? both the white house and governor sandoval's office won't confirm the story. the governor's office told channel 2 in a statement today: "neither governor sandoval nor his staff has been contacted by or talked to the obama administration regarding any potential vetting for the vacancy on the u.s. supreme court." however-- we do know that the governor met with senator harry reid in washington on monday. senator reid says... he would support a sandoval

pushing it with the president. reid: "i've talked to the president. i've talked to his chief of staff many times. i talked to his political guy today. and he should pick who he thinks is the best." reid went on to say-- that he'd prefer a more progressive appointee... but he still had many positive words for nevada's governor. reid: "he's a good person. he has a great record, and he's been a tremendously good governor in spite of having to deal with some very big problems there." as for president obama-- he has said he's looking for a nominee with "impeccable legal credentials." and he hopes senate leadership will reconsider its position on blocking a hearing. obama: "my hope and expectation is that once there is an actual nominee, once this is no longer an abstraction, that those on the judiciary committee recognize that their job is to give this person a hearing, to show the courtesy of meeting
