gotten used to seeing coyotes in their neighborhoods -- but some of those animals have had some recent conflicts with people's pets. that is tonight's channel 2 news big story at 5:30 if you live on the edges of town -- chances are you have either heard or seen coyotes in your neighborhood. good evening, i'm landon miller. and i'm kristen remington -- thank you for staying with us tonight. while coyote activity tends to increase during the spring and summer -- we've already had multiple reports of the animals attacking dogs, since new years. paul nelson joins us live from the damonte ranch area. paul -- this is just one area that is seeing this type of problem right? that's right, kristen -- you would expect to see coyotes in areas like this, out in the brush. but if you look over here -- there's nothing but houses. and that is where a lot of these run-ins are happening. coyotes live all over nevada -- and that's why it's not surprising to see them in town -- especially on the outskirts. beth "i don't know if they're getting a rabbit or what but we can hear them yipping and

and it was never as scary as the night, when her small dog, jax, was in the backyard of her damonte ranch home -- when they heard a ruccus. beth "my son ran out there and he actually saw this lanky animal, which appeared to be a coyote, and it sprung over the fence as soon as my son started yelling." jax was battered and bloody -- but luckily he survived. but wildlife officials say this type of conflict between coyotes and pets are not that uncommon. chris "when i'm moving out into the semi-country that the urban interface symbolizes, i'm actually moving into an area where i'm going to have interactions with wildlife." healy says it's best to avoid leaving things like dog food and trash in your yard -- and do your best to make coyotes feel unwelcome. chris "you want to make noise. you want to make them fearful. you want to make them fearful of humans and they should be fearful of humans. you don't want them being comfortable." cabral says they are taking precautions to prevent coyotes from coming back -- including keeping a close eye on jax. beth "we feel we can't go out to let our dog out anymore, by

students wanting to get their masters in the field will now be able to in nevada, starting next year. amanda ketchledge joins us live in the studio with more. amanda-- starting in the summer of 20-17, 24 students will be enrolled in the physician assistant program to ultimately help the primary care need in our community. brian lauf, director of pa program: "adding qualified health professionals to meet that access need, will only benefit the entire population in nevada. especially the rural and under served areas." brian lauf is the founding director of the new physician assistant program that will start classes at the unr redfield campus in south reno next year. students will get a hands on experience... gloves ....dealing with patients in family medicine, women's health, and general surgery....before becoming a physician assistant like ben hogan at a renown urgent care. ben hogan, physician assistant for renown: "we essentially are physician extenders. so we're trying to help the physicians do more." ben hogan, physician assistant for renown: "we see patients independently. we can diagnose and prescribe treatments,

but so are questions you may have while filling your cart. like should we always buy organic? are extra lean meats much better for you? and how much sodium is too much? "so this is obviously a popular aisle because of convenience. convenience is key." registered dietician, elise compston works with saint mary's fitness center. she helps clients with diabetes, hypertension, cancer and weight loss. something as simple as cutting out excess sodium, she says, can have a big impact on your health. "the variety with 50% less sodium has 180 milligrams compared with the original that has 380 milligrams. they both still have sodium, but that's a significant difference." in the meat department, elise reads the labels, too. she says the leaner the meat, the better. take lean turkey breast, for example. "one serving is going to have eight grams of fat and 2.5 grams of saturated fat. compared with extra lean... it has 1.5 grams of fat and a half gram of saturated fat per serving. so that's a really significant difference."
