i'm kristen remington. for update. breaking news, cbs news projects republican ted cruz has won his home state of texas. that was a must-win for him as he tries to derail donald trump. >> but trump is having a very good night. won virginia that. gives him at least five of the 12 states holding g.o.p. primaries and caucuses today. >> pelley: hillary clinton is having a good night, as well. she has just won texas. that make six wins for her tonight so far. john dickerson, a good night for the front-runners. >> yeah, and the challengers don't have a good story for how they can beat back those front-runners. ted cruz won in texas. he has to win somewhere else. marco rubio had his best shot in virginia and it didn'twork. >> pelley: john dickerson, thanks very much. we'll have more updates to come

it is looking like a southern sweep for the former secretary of state, as expected, thanks in no small part to support from african-americans who were so see to her victory in south carolina, as well. the crowd here in miami is euphoric. they know that she is set to pick up a lot of delegates tonight, and she increasingly is trump. take a listen. >> this country belongs to all of us, not just those at the top. [cheering and applause] not just the people who look one way, worship one way or even think one way. >> reporter: increasingly her speeches have become a repudiation of trump, and tonight is no different. she did not mention him by name, but she did say that we will not

breaking down barriers. she said that we don't need to make america great again. america already is great. it needs to be made whole. and she argued that what this country really needs, scott, is a little more love and kindness. now, as for her democratic opponent, bernie sanders, he's set to pick up some states, as well. he's notched a win in his home state of vermont. he's looking good in massachusetts and in oklahoma. but he knows that this is really hillary clinton's night. that's why he came out early, celebrated, and he's in for the night, scott. >> pelley: nancy cordes with the clinton campaign tonight. nancy, thank you. now, this is looking like a tough night for republican marco rubio. at least so far it doesn't appear he's going to win any of these states. we're going to go now to rubio headquarters where he just began speaking. let's listen. >> we are going to send a message that the party of lincoln and reagan and the presidency of the united states

their homeland, by millions of poem that lost their future, but thank god they found this great country where anything is possible, where everyone can go as far as their talent and their work will take them. >> pelley: marco rubio, the hope of the republican establishment, not giving in even though he has not won anywhere yet tonight and has lost in virginia where he made a big play for his first primary win. now, let's go to major garrett who is covering the republicans. major? >> reporter: scott, donald trump is due to address a press conference in mere moments. he's leading almost everywhere and is poised to win most of tonight's super tuesday contests, including the just-called state of virginia, an important swing state where marco rubio made last-minute push but ultimately fell short. the trump campaign is also eyeing close contests in arkansas and oklahoma, but it did expect as happened, ted cruz, to win his home state of texas. for marco rubio, he hopes to extract at least one super

minnesota, but for tonight, the story is this: donald trump will win most of the 595 delegates awarded and therefore draw closer to the 1,237 required to secure the republican nomination. for cruz, it comes down to achieving victories outside of texas and convincing republicans after tonight he is the candidate best positioned to challenge and ultimately defeat trump. rubio will look for as many strong second-place finishes as possible and argue it was his aggressive attacks on trump in the final days before super tuesday that slowed trump's momentum. for john kasich, there is hope for victory tonight in vermont, but for his campaign, scott, it's all about the contest two weeks from now in ohio, but tonight trump's position will be stronger than ever, closer to the nomination than ever, and for republicans and their party, they must now decide if they can or will accept donald trump as their standard bearer, and if they will not, scott, by what means do they intend to stop him? >> pelley: major garrett

tonight. major, thanks very much. now joining us for election night coverage are norah o'donnell, the host of "cbs this morning" and john dickerson, cbs news political editor and anchor of "face the nation." john, rubio and cruz concentrated withering fire on trump for the last week or ten days and it hasn't worked. >> reporter: that's right. marco rubio did his donald trump act, but the only thing he left out of it is donald trump's ability to win. he did not win in virginia. that was state that set up the best for him. and i'm struck by donald trump, what he's trying to do, converting tonight. if you look behind major down in florida, he is basically created donald trump has, a kind of white house tableaux there, like the east room where he's going to hold the press conference. his argument: this race is over. come to me. and now for republicans, particularly those in the establishment, it's a time for choosing. if donald trump has as good a night as it looks like he's having, are they going to stick with him or are they going to break? >> reporter: it's important to

trump voter. he's winning evangelicals. he's winning non-college grads, but he's also winning college grads, except in the state of virginia, which was very close with marco rubio. he's winning megabucks voters who want -- amongst voters who want... >> pelley: let me interrupt quickly. cbs news is projecting that ted cruz will win oklahoma. we just projected cruz the winner in his home state of texas. now cbs news is projecting he will win in the state of oklahoma. you can see right there a pretty good lead on donald trump. interesting development for cruz. certainly really important for cruz to win outside his home state and outside of iowa, which he won early on. >> reporter: that's right. marco rubio has not won anything yet. cruz has won. therefore i am the trump alternative. but this is not bad news for donald trump. obviously he's had his wins, but

sticking around in the race, splitting the anti-trump vote. ted cruz has done well, better than the bare minimum, but he hasn't run through hose other states, alabama, georgia, where he was hoping to win originally. so if donald trump is doing well tonight and the other rest of the race becomes a model, there is not a single alternative, that's still good for donald trump. >> pelley: nor, yeah hillary clinton, duh she run away with it at this point? >> reporter: her team is hoping to open up a 100-point delegate lead. she's doing well so far. they want someone to continue obama's policies. they chose her. 34% of the electorate say specious is the most important quality. she's winning that group 9-1. so her experience has won out tonight. the test has always been for bernie sanders, can he win among minority voters, black voters, hispanic voters. we're still waiting in a couple states, but the four states he made a big play for have a more white electorate than one made up of minorities. >> pelley: now, we have been talking to voters in all of

asking them what their opinions are as they left the polls today, and anthony mason has been looking at this exit poll information. anthony, what did we find out? >> reporter: well, scott, what were republican voters looking for in a candidate on this super tuesday? that's what we asked them as they left the polls. the most important quality they told suss a candidate who shares their values. one-third of g.o.p. voters, 33%, ranked that first. a candidate who can bring change came in a close second at 32%. surprisingly perhaps, the ability to win in november came in at the bottom here. now work the g.o.p. campaign becoming more negative, even nasty, as you mentioned, in recent weeks, we asked republican voters who would run the most -- who had run the most unfair campaign. donald trump had the dubious distinction of coming out on top here, 39% said he'd run the most unfair campaign to 30% for cruz and just 15% for rubio. but it does not appear to have hurt trump so far tonight, scott. >> pelley: anthony mason, thank you very much.

learning what the new republican party is going the look like under donald trump. >> pelley: that's an interesting phrase john just used, the "trump coalition." not a traditional republican coalition, but a diverse group of people that are united by one idea -- they're mad as hell at washington. >> reporter: they're extremely angry. in fact, 43% said they are angry and trump gets a majority of those voters who say they are angry. this is an angry electorate, a republican electorate. it is a white electorate. it is a largely older electorate. and this is the composition of this republican primary electorate. that has the establishment concerned tonight. there is talk about a new super pac, new funding to try the take out donald trump. others are saying why wasn't that done before this date because at this point he is well on his way to the nomination. >> pelley: donald trump has come in a fairly close second in

the room. i look everywhere. >> reporter: in a video deposition, her stalker michael barrett testified he picked andrews because she was trending online. he said he used a house phone at the marriott where andrews was staying to find her room number. >> they connected me. the house phone, concierge phone shows a room number so you knew what room she was in. >> reporter: barrett shot cell phone video through a peephole and later put the naked video of andrews online, where it's been watched more than 17 million times. andrews says the staff at the nashville marriott should have told her when barrett asked to stay in the room next to hers. in cross-examination, lawyers for the hotel owner, a marriott franchisee, emphasized andrews professional success since the videos came out. >> yes. >> reporter: barrett pled guilty to talking andrews in 2010 and was sentenced to two and a half
