7:04 am
is apple's mishandling of the problem, attempts to cover it and mislead. that's what's driving a certain amount of frenzy with apple at the wrong side of the frenzy. >> reporter: this has been a long week for apple. a bloomberg report has a senior engineer saying he wanted or warned apple ceo steve jobs about this problem before the release and consumer reports refused to recommend to consumers. apple has come under fire from kusa merse, experts and has even been sued since the iphone 4 release. it has had an antenna issues and for those of you unfamiliar, it wraps all the way around the phone. experts are telling customers the bumpers which were sold at the release and wraps around the entire phone eliminates most of the problem. so today, will apple offer free bumpers the customers who have
7:05 am
purchased the phone? will they apologize, both or nothing close. yesterday an open letter was sent calling for a free fix for consumers and he quote says i believe it is encouple bent to address this flaw in a transparent manner and is calling for a recall of the phone. experts don't believe that will happen. it is 10:00 a.m. right here in coopertion and we will have more for you on morning on 2. reporting live. all right. thank you. time is now 7:05. hewlett packard will now move some operations off the apple campus. hp will move some employees about half an hour north to a facility closer to hp's head quarters. the l make the company more efficient. right now only about 60% of the coopertino and work spaces are being used. this is expected to bring the

7:12 am
capture nearly all of the oil until the well is killed. it is important to remember that prior to the installation of this new cap we were collecting on average about 25,000-barrels a day. for almost 90 days of this environmental disaster, all of us have taken hope in the image of clean water instead of oil spewing in gulf. but it is our responsibility to make sure that we are taking a prudent course of action and not simply looking for a short term solution that could lead to even greater problems down the road. so to summarize, the new cap is good news. either we will be able to use it to stop the flow or we will be able to use it to capture almost all of the oil until the relief well is done. but we are not going to know for certain which approach makes sense until additional data is in.
7:13 am
and all the american people should rest assured that all of these decisions will be based on the science and what's best for the people of the gulf. all right. i will take just one or two questions. >> did you feel the earthquake, mr. president. >> i didn't. >> we have been listening the latest on bp oil leak in the gulf of mexico. he said it is a new cap on top of the oil leak appears to be holding right now. but additional tests need to be taken to fine out if we have got an official stop to all of this. we will bring you more back to very latest from washington dc in a couple of minutes. we will take a break and we will be right back.

7:17 am
it will stay on. >> it is encouraging for the first time in 86 days not to see oil gushing out of the well but we all need to be cautious until we have seen the right results. >> there are still fears about another explosion from too much pressure or a rapture on the sea floor. reporting live from washington dc, allison burns, ktvu news. >> thank you. time now is 7:17. there was a shake up in the nation's capitol but had nothing to do with politics, a small earthquake hit just outside of washington dc in rockville maryland measured 3.6 magnitude but they felt it as far as way as west virginia and pennsylvania. the shaking started just after 5:00, washington dc time. so far no reports of injuries or damage. >> the president said he felt the quake. >> did he. >> yes. >> lots of people feeling the shake. >> the long awaited financial reform go easy to president obama for his signature. the senate passed the bill on a

8:46 am
phid fixed in later design. there's no question about it that this is something that got out that probably shouldn't have. how quickly and easily can be something we will learn in an hour. >> it is something they can give people a k and say throw that on the iphone and everything will be fine, disrupting the signal anymore. >> it is possible. more likely the fix will be if it is like that will be a glove or a bumper, that was designed to protect it from drops and things like that. it keeps the person's hand directly out of content and that seems to be what the problem is. now whether or not they will offer a low price one or a free one or one at all remains to be seen. that's what is coming up at 10:00 but clearly there are two things here, the real engineering problem, whatever that is and a perception l problem. if people think that the phone
8:47 am
is cutting out more than it should be, even though it has nothing to do with that phone, they have a real perception l problem and for many people perception is in deed reality. >> apple has enjoyed a shiny reputation where people are really happy with them although i have heard people complain signal in general. this makes it worse in the long term does that really make people go out and buy other phones? certainly there are a lot available right now. >> that's yesterday we covered the introduction of the droid x. on sunday, at&t puts out a thing called captivate. there are a whole array, so any time you have a slip and fall by the leader that givers advantage to those people trying to catch up. when you look at these phones they're very, very impressive. very iphone like and in some cases surpass the capacities and the capabilities of some of the things that the iphone does. so this does cause them to have an opportunity to sale better but on the other hand, iphone
8:48 am
is still the undisputed leader by a wide margin and consumer reports which doesn't recommend this phone still rates it highly. >> when this happens at 10:00 are you ebbing expecting them to be apoll jetting or coming back saying don't worry about it. what's the tone going to be. >> if they try to take on consumer reports they have a problem because a lot of people just have a very fond and fuzzy and warm feeling for consumer reports. that's one thing they have to be careful. you have to go back to the first iphone and let's put it in perspective. these have on been out since the middle of 2007. this is the fourth in three years. in the first they sold them for a very high price and not long after they enter deuced them they dropped the price and angered existing customers. so they provided a $100 credit. they know how to be humble.
8:49 am
the question is how seriously they take this. the stock market is. it is down 10% from when this broke and had is something they have to deal with customers. they don't want to anger customers because they understand, and certainly could have some implications for the i pad. so what they will do is the right thing. the question is how and we will figure that out in just about an hour. >> certainly a lot of i foarn this morning, tom as always thank you for your insight. time now is 8:49. the long awaited financial reform bill goes to president obama. the senate passed that bill almost two years after a financial melt down. the bill puts new regulations on lending practices, and expands consumer productions. >> it provides certainty to everyone from bankers to farmers to business owners, to
