tonight with more on what the step grandfather of the 2-year- old mauled by a pit bull is saying. >> reporter: he says he's sorry and regrets keeping those five pit bulls. one of which had shown signs of aggression in the past. despite the loss of his grandson he says he does not feel that he should be punished behind bars. from jail, hayashi says that no one knew his grandson had been attacked until after his body was found. >> my wife found our grandson in the garage, mauled. i don't know how long he was in the garage. if i were at home it wouldn't have happened. >> reporter: his grandson was mauled by one of the pit bulls

kept in their home. hayash i ys one of the three pit bulls in the garage had shown aggression in the past by killing the family's chihuahua. but he did not feel the dogs were a danger to children. >> having the dogs is my fault. that is my burden that i will carry on for the rest of my life. even though the dogs did the mauling, it is my responsibility to keep this from happening. >> reporter: as to his five dogs, he signed paper work to put them down. >> of course i was upset. as soon as i saw the police officers give me the paper to sign for the dogs to get them

euthanized. i did it right away, no problem. i didn't -- i have different feelings towards dogs now. i want no animals whatsoever. steven ayashi was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and on suspicion of owning malicious animals. ken pritchett, ktvu news. friends and coworkers are mourning the loss of oakland father who was gunned down this morning shortly after he left for work. the shooting happened in front of the man's home on 15th street just before 2:00 a.m. rob roth is in oakland now with the latest, rob. >> reporter: julie, police say their talking to relatives and neighbors of the victim but that they have little to go on in this morning's shooting. as police search for evidence, those who knew 53-year-old mariano say they are dumbfounded anyone would want to shoot him.

>> very sad, very sad. i'm like unexpected. like he doesn't get associated with everybody here. even me, he's a very nice guy. i'm amazed of what happened. >> reporter: it happened at about 1:30 this morning. >> i was getting ready for bed, all i heard is a gunshot then yelling afterwards. i was a little nervous to come outside. i didn't know who was out, i came out and i seen him laying down. >> reporter: chris mariano was just getting off work at kaiser hospital where he's been a custodian for 20 years. police say he doesn't appear to be the victim of a robbery and do not know why he was shot to death. >> you have a person killed and we need the citizens to help us out. >> he's here when we need something in the house, like guys jobs, he always helps me.
