tonight with more on what the step grandfather of the 2-year- old mauled by a pit bull is saying. >> reporter: he says he's sorry and regrets keeping those five pit bulls. one of which had shown signs of aggression in the past. despite the loss of his grandson he says he does not feel that he should be punished behind bars. from jail, hayashi says that no one knew his grandson had been attacked until after his body was found. >> my wife found our grandson in the garage, mauled. i don't know how long he was in the garage. if i were at home it wouldn't have happened. >> reporter: his grandson was mauled by one of the pit bulls

kept in their home. hayash i ys one of the three pit bulls in the garage had shown aggression in the past by killing the family's chihuahua. but he did not feel the dogs were a danger to children. >> having the dogs is my fault. that is my burden that i will carry on for the rest of my life. even though the dogs did the mauling, it is my responsibility to keep this from happening. >> reporter: as to his five dogs, he signed paper work to put them down. >> of course i was upset. as soon as i saw the police officers give me the paper to sign for the dogs to get them

euthanized. i did it right away, no problem. i didn't -- i have different feelings towards dogs now. i want no animals whatsoever. steven ayashi was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and on suspicion of owning malicious animals. ken pritchett, ktvu news. friends and coworkers are mourning the loss of oakland father who was gunned down this morning shortly after he left for work. the shooting happened in front of the man's home on 15th street just before 2:00 a.m. rob roth is in oakland now with the latest, rob. >> reporter: julie, police say their talking to relatives and neighbors of the victim but that they have little to go on in this morning's shooting. as police search for evidence, those who knew 53-year-old mariano say they are dumbfounded anyone would want to shoot him.

>> very sad, very sad. i'm like unexpected. like he doesn't get associated with everybody here. even me, he's a very nice guy. i'm amazed of what happened. >> reporter: it happened at about 1:30 this morning. >> i was getting ready for bed, all i heard is a gunshot then yelling afterwards. i was a little nervous to come outside. i didn't know who was out, i came out and i seen him laying down. >> reporter: chris mariano was just getting off work at kaiser hospital where he's been a custodian for 20 years. police say he doesn't appear to be the victim of a robbery and do not know why he was shot to death. >> you have a person killed and we need the citizens to help us out. >> he's here when we need something in the house, like guys jobs, he always helps me.

>> reporter: mariano's family says funeral arrangements are pending, the city is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. reporting live in oakland, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. barry bonds federal perjury case won't start until next year. attorneys for both sides were in court today, bonds was not. but they couldn't agree on a trl date so the trial will now be held sometime early next year with the date still to be determined. we felt this, you know from the first day that we all met that the government's evidence proved nothing. and we still think that the government's evidence proves nothing. bonds had pleaded not guilty for lying to a grand jur that he never knowingly took performance enhancing drugs. a solano county judge refused to reduce the fine for

manslaughter for a fire that killed two children. an arrest warrant has also been issued for the sister. investigators say the children had been left unattended. james remains in custody on $250,000 bail and is due back in court august 6th. in the south bay, a judge today ordered a san jose activist to stay away from the vietnamese performing he's accused of attacking on stage. 61-year-old lee tong must stay at least 100 feet away from singer hong. the judge also reduced tong's bail. a assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly using pepper spray against the singer. san san francisco police say king and terry were arrested after months of

property tax. and-- >> this is your home. >> we thought we did everything right. >> reporter: the stran family got caught in the tangled mess of banks taking over other bank's business on foreclosed homes. the bank bought the home from world savings. world savings was bought by wachovia. but the bargain evaporated when wells fargo forclosed on the original mortgage, more than half a million dollars. >> i just thought, this is a mistake. and i assumed it would go away. >> reporter: turns out foreclosure notices do not have to specify a first or second mortgage. it's in the paper work, but not always obvious. >> two loans were executed, signed and recorded on the same date at the same time and i literally thought it was one loan. >> reporter: south bay congressman mike honda says banks should not be able to sell worthless second mortgages and called it other reason for

taxpayers. 63-cents of every dollar paid come from investment reforms. a southern california wildfire today shut down part of the major freeway linking the northern and southern parts of the state. the fire started about 1:45 this afternoon in the hills of santa clarita. the highway patrol shut down all north bound lanes of i5 for some time. traffic was so bad that at one time, 10 fire trucks were unable to reach the fire and drivers were tearing down chain link fences to get off the roadway. berkeley police today announced the arrest of a homeless man. travis churchhill has pleaded not guilty to setting the fire. these surveillance pictures was

weather conditions helped firefighters battle a fire today. high humidity helped reduce the chances of the flames spreading to surrounding vegetation. the fire seriously damaged the house near park ridge drive. investigators say no one lived in the home which had been under construction for six months. tonight there's still no word on what caused the fire. city leaders in san francisco said today they have had enough. historic golden gate park has been hit and hit by vandals that have destroyed dozens of trees. >> reporter: people are calling

also other factors. >> those of us that are older seniors like myself are living longer, we're taking better care of ourselves. we're working longer which keeps us mentally prepared to do things. california's dmv is the only one in the country that offers a full time program dedicated to senior drivers. you might want to fill up your gas tank this weekend because prices are about to go up. crude oil prices are up due to concerns that tropical storms could disrupt supplies in the gulf of mexico. aaa says the average price for a gallon of unleaded gas is 3.17 in oakland an san jose. and 3.24 in san francisco. a freemont shopping center is getting a second anchor store. nordstrom announced it will

open a new store. it will take over the linen and things location. apple's iphone 4 is facing another glitch. the cupertino says it is having problems manufacturing the white version of the iphone 4. now it won't be available until later this year. the issue is not affecting black iphone 4s. it was a long wait down, but close to 100 volunteers agreed to go over the edge to give the california special olympics a big boost. the volunteers repelled 400 feet down the side of the grand hyatt all to raise money for the special olympics. the organization provides free sports training and competition for children and adults with developmental disabilities. a lot of athletes were there to cheer on the repellers. >> it's an easy thing to say

at the coast. warmer on saturday. that's the warmest day. and the extended forecast brings us some cooler weather. upper 90s and even low 100s as you head into the san joaquin valley. fire danger is coming up, air quality dropping off a little bit. along the coast we see low 60s, upper 50s. low 70s out into the east bay. mid-70s hopped over the bill, out toward lafayette. out toward evergreen and portions inland you will find upper 80s. you get the picture. the bay area microclimates in force as we look for at least a 40-degree spread from coast to inland. it has been a warming trend, it started really on thursday. and we are just going to stay there. this isn't 100, that's 90. we're going to top out at 90 saturday and sunday. that will be the height of the

warming trend. things are going to start cooling down. we are looking for a cooler weather pattern. into early next week, 92 in fairfield, there's your 90 in pittsburgh and 91 in antioch. 81 in san jose. lots of cities, lots of warmth. saturday is the warmest day on the weekend. good looking weekend, really is. fire danger back up tomorrow and then it comes back down as things start to cool down a little bit. >> all right. >> thank you, bill. martin gereck has released employment figures he says shows the need to cut the number of state workers. gereck says it takes 25 average taxpayers to pay the average state has lost almost 1.3 million jobs in the past five years while at the same time adding more than 38,000 state workers. gereck says the jobs numbers coupled with the state's $19
