festival in germany. good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm mike mibach in for ken wayne. fire crews rushed to unincorporated solano county today after a brush fire ignited around 3:00. the vegetation fire quickly went to six alarms as dozens of firefighters attacked the flames. debra has more. >> reporter: this fire was declared under control only within the last hour. it burned about 25 hours and came dangerously close to a couple of houses but they did escape damage. several cars and out buildings did burn, though. a resident tells me it all started with a neighbor's trash fire in a barrel that got out of control. now, winds were fairly light but it's a hot, dry day and the grass went up fast. so mutual aid was called and

this fire did go to six alarms. but the two-hour firefight knocked it down. crews will beout here a while hosing all of the hot spots, barrel burning is illegal. so that is being investigated and a firefighter did suffer smoke inhalation and heat excaution and is -- exhaustion and is at the hospital and shoulden okay. at the aim -- should be okay. at the sale time this fire was billing another fire broke out at a pg&e substation. that was another mad scramble for dixon fire crews. we'll have another report tonight at 10:00. back to you. and in san jose, firefighters are mopping up a grass fire that burned near interstate 280. two-alarm fire was reported shortly after 2:30 near story road. the fire burned near a wal-mart but no evacuations were issued. about 40 firefighters responded to the call and they had the

flames knocked down by 4:15 this afternoon. no damages or injuries were reported. the cause is still under investigation. well, many feared crime would rise when oakland laid off 80 police officers, some residents are now taking it upon themselves to fight violence by going straight to young people. that was the focus of an event today. this after two teenagers were shot just last night. patti lee is live now with the story. patti? >> reporter: well, last night's violence underscores the need for effective deterrence. today we witnessed two ways to solve the same problem. >> up and down! up and down! >> reporter: at this middle school in east oakland, more than 100 boys took an all-day crash course on how to man up. >> when you were younger, like just started to realize what you wanted to do. >> reporter: the event actually titled the manup conference is organized by the group and is

designed to connect kids who may lack adult male role models. >> our goal is to plant seeds beyond today that younger brothers and older brothers can really help each other for the other 364 days of the year. >> reporter: conversations with participants reveal a lot of kids want violence -- >> there are people who want role models. they need to be bigger. maybe a role model for two kids or maybe the whole street. >> reporter: this kid worries about the violence. >> kids getting shot for no reason. >> reporter: a and he was shocked to learn -- and he was shocked to learn about the shooting last night at a house party. one of them remains in critical condition at oakland's children hospital. last night, a 32-year-old man was shot and killed outside a market. >> reporter: they held a vigil

at poplar park to remember victims of violence the. >> my son was shot seven times. he left behind a 3-year-old son that i raise now that's 6 years old. >> reporter: ida hancock says her son was killed because of a dispute on the basketball court. she says she's making it her life's work to make sure her grandson grows up in a world better than the one left behind. a santa cruz man is behind bars tonight accused of killing his girlfriend during a domestic dispute. police believe 39-year-old winsey sanchez used a knife to cut his live-in girlfriend's throat. officers found the woman bleeding from a serious laceration across her neck inside the couple's apartment around 4:00 this morning. she died at the scene. ndreds of families flocked to the park for a soccer tournament today. it's the same spot where three

pipe bombs were found within a 48-hour period. as those soccer matches were underway, parents remain on alert. ken pritchett is on alert with the story. ken? reporter: after those three pipe bombs were found, police asked visitors here to be extra vigil based on conversations and even a 911 call this morning to police, it seems the visitors here were vigilance. [ cheers ] >> reporter: outside, hundreds of kids who were playing in a soccer tournament, it was an ordinary weekend, except for the words of advice given to both players and parents. >> the coach said don't touch anything that doesn't belong to you. be cautious. >> i told my kids, be careful. >> reporter: melvin and sabrina said they felt safe, despite the discovery of three explosive devices in a wooded area near the soccer fields. >> the opinion that we got from the experts of the walnut creek

police department were they were constructed in a manner that was consistent with the pipe bomb. >> reporter: two of the pipe bombs were found on wednesday. a third pipe bomb was found yesterday about 200 yards from the initial site. this is a photograph that captured the detonation of that third device. concord police sought mutual aid in the form of five explosive detection dogs and 25 extra officers from around the bay area who searched the park late last night for any additional devices. none were found. >> it's safe. cup on out. bring your families. what we want everybody to do is always remain concerned. >> reporter: last night a backpack was discovered in a homeless camp and turned out not to be a threat but shows the public is heeding advice. >> a parent discovered that backpack, called us here, we determined it was the same backpack, not a threat. but they are doing what we've asked them to do, look for

those suspicious things, leave them alone and call us. >> reporter: they will don't to step up -- continue to step up patrol. the pipe bombs have been isn't to a crime lab for analysis. so far there have been no arrests and there are no suspects. in concord, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. police say a known gang member was gunned down in san francisco's bayview neighborhood early this morning. it happened around 1:15 this morning when 24-year-old kerry dawson was sitting in ther's seat at -- driver's seat at revere avenue. he was able to drive three blocks before his car crashed. he was taken to san francisco general hospital where he died a half hour later. no arrests have been made yet. san francisco police are also searching for a carjacking suspect who may have also shot at officers early in morning.

a police spokesman says officers spotted a vehicle matching the description of one carjacked overnight around 5:30 a.m. near laguna and geary streets. when they tried to pull the car other he, they said it wouldn't -- over, they said it wouldn't stop and a chase began. the two men then took off who were in the car. they say one man had a gun and fired at officers the an officer returned fire. no one was injured. officers found one man in a nearby park and arrested him. a weapon was also found but that second suspect is still at large. two atms in san francisco were stolen overnight. the first was taken from a 76 gas station at 9th. police say someone tried to take the machine by wrapping a chain around it, attaching that chain to a vehicle and driving it out of the wall. >> it appears a similar crime took place on market and 7th. investigators are still trying to determine if money was inside the atms and if so how

much. police tell ktvu the suspect vehicle may be a light van reported stolen out of hayward. two days after a deadly greyhound bus crash in fresno, the highway was at the great america amusement park in slay checking tour buses and vans for safety violation. there's no indication that the fresno crash that killed six people was caused by bus maintenance or driving. it's important to make sure buses and vans are properly main tan a -- main tabbed -- maintainedded a and operated. it's usually pretty catastrophic and disastrous. >> the chp conducts 1900 bus and vanums in the bay area every year -- and inspections in the bay area every year. well, that familiar odor has not returned to gilroy. the gilroy garlic festival is

there's fear that two service medicals have been killed. july is on track to become the deadliest month for americans since the war began nine years ago. in western germany, 18 people were killed and dozens more injured during a stampede at the music festival. authorities are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. but witnesses say panic broke

out in an overcrowded tunnel near the entran to that event. a large crowd made it difficult for emergency workers to reach all of the villes. the festival is one of europe's biggest electronic music events attracting more than 1 million peel into in canada, some appeasing -- and in canada, some amazing pictures. a jet that crashed on the ground and exploded. it happened yesterday during a practice run for a weekend airshow. witnesses said that jet was going back and forth before it plummeted to the ground. the pilot managed to parachute to safety, narrowly missing that huge fireball. he was treated and released from the hospital. tropical storm bonnie closing in on the gulf coast has been downgraded to a tropical depression. that means crews are headed back to the spill site after they evacuated. here's more from louisiana. >> reporter: the gulf cleanup

america moving forward. >> reporter: during his weekly radio and web address, the president hailed the financial reform bill passed this week as a victory for consumers and small businesses. many veterans will soon have greater access to medical marijuana. the department of veterans affairs this week is sending out new guidelines to hospitalsed a clinics in 14 states where medical marijuana use is legal, including here in california. the new policy says that veterans can use marijuana for medical treatment, though it cannot be prescribed by the va. in addition, patients who use it will not be denied other pain medication which has been the policy. the veterans group say that's forced patients to choose between medical marijuana and va benefits. sully sullenberger is about to take off on a 35-mile charity bike ride. today the captain and his wife hosted a hike and picnic lunch

to raise money for a nonprofit that builds friendships, employment and leadership opportunities for people with develop mental disabilities. they say their work with charities benefiting the disabled started years ago after their oldest daughter invited over a friend with down syndrome for a playdate. >> one of the things we've always done is get our kids involved in organizations because i didn't want them to have that stigma and feel like they could not invite a friend like that over the house. looks like it was pretty nice weather for that picnic in danville. let's check in mark tamayo. it was pretty nice across much of the bay area. >> that's right. temperatures warmed up a little bit over yesterday's readings in most spots. right now the maps on the live

stormtracker2, i can show you this, look at the thunderstorms developing over the sierra, around truckee and reno. those are thunderstorms. that will be a concern over the next 48 hours with the possibility of lightning strikes that could trigger fires across northern california. back to the bay area, here we go with the fog bank still hugging our cost line, still has not been moving out too much. as a result it's been keeping the coastal spots and the bay side community on the cool side. that cloud bank will gradually cool back with an onshore breeze. that breeze will kick in overnight. as a result we're talking about winds 15 to 25 miles an hour. there we go. in san francisco only in the 50s. la fayette, mostly clear skies and temperatures mainly in the upper 70s. 79. you can see antioch topped out at 94. san francisco at 60 degrees. san jose in the upper 70s and morgan hill, 89.

once again, cool -- cool coast, warm inland. for tomorrow, another round of fog pulling back to the shoreline. the temperatures will be coming down. this area of low pressure just offshore and this area of high pressure to the east, the combination set up that southerly monsoonal flow an we've been tracking thunderstorms across the area. we'll have to keep an eye on this with the thunderstorms to the north and just to the east. with that the fire danger will be on the increase of portions of northern california especially right around the sierra. for us closer to home, we still have the fog to deal with and temperatures. we begin to cool things off especially inland for tomorrow. but this will be the eventual temperature again with the upper 50s coast side. the warmest locations 89 to 90 degrees. here's our forecast model in the short-term showing the clouds on the increase. 53 to 58. in the afternoon, partly to mostly sunny.
