. she was killed while visiting family in the south bay. and tonight firefighters want to know what is that righted -- started this apartment fire that killed an 8-year-old bay area girl. >> complete bay area coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu, channel 2 news. good evening, i'm maureen naylor, heather holmes is off tonight. >> and i'm ken wayne. we will have more on that bay area fire. but i want to take you to chris sew to the mono on the east sleep of the sierra firefighters are busy battling a dozen firefighters. the fires started after storms and lightning came earlier

today. one fire burned more than 1700- acres 45 miles north of reno. it destroyed at least one home near the small community of doyle. other fires burned near bottom town and carson city causing some concerns for residents but not threatening homes there. another fire burning near bridgeport in mono county. cal fire moved strike teams from the coast to the redding areas in anticipation of lightning sparked fires. so far there are no reports of injuries. the big concern for firefighters is that lightning and wind. with more on the thunderstorm activity let's go to ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo. >> ken, not a lot happening in the bay area. but the active area to our east here is the latest on the satellite. switch this over to the radar. see the coverage. been some decrease but still some active weather in the eastern portion of the states with the possibility of some isolated thunderstorms. a different story as we switch over and show you this on the satellite radar.

this was the loop this afternoon to the evening hours. you can see the coverage dawn toward lake tahoe and areas up to our north. now, with the concern of at least with the thunderstorms, the dry thunderstorms, not producing much in the way of rainfall, it could be producing some lightning strikes, we could have this a red flag warning currently in place for all of the areas shaded in red with the possibility of some more lightning strikes for tonight into tomorrow morning. and some gusting winds of the the main concern over the next 5-10 hours. pretty much for the remainder of your monday with the possibility of still some thunderstorms firing up across the areas to our north and also to the east. as far as the overall weather pattern here in the bay area we have some changes to talk about as well. more on that coming up in just a few minutes. thank you, mark. now to a tragedy in the south bay where fire investigators are trying to determine what started a deadly fire that swept through a san jose apartment complex early this morning. ultimately killing an 8-year- old girl trapped inside. ktvu's paul came letters percent -- chambers reports. >> reporter: the car and window of the apartment are now

boarded up. but for more than 12 hours, fire officials and police officers have been searching for clues and evidence to see what caused this deadly fire. at 1:42 this morning san jose fire department received a 911 call of an apartment fully engulfed in flames. >> i heard the smoke detector went off so i came out running. >> i saw the flames come out just shooting out. i heard popping noises, too. it sounded like gunshots. so we just got out really quick. >> and i went back inside and i knocked on my daughter's door. and i told her you grab whatever you can and come out, there is fire outside. >> reporter: according to fire officials while en route to the building they were notified that a little girl was trapped inside. crews were on the scene within six minutes of the call and roughly four minutes later they were making their way inside the apartment to find the 8- year-old girl. >> a very small apartment. they went to the bedroom. and they found the little girl there. she was by herself in the room on the floor. >> one of the firefighters

brought her out and tried to perform c.p.r. on her, but unsuccessful. >> reporter: there were seven people inside the one bedroom apartment when the fire started, five children and two adults. everyone made it out safely except for 8-year-old girl who was later transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. nine others were treated for minor injuries. in all six units were evacuated leaving 25 people without a place to stay. still, people who live in the complex say they are like one big family. and losing the girl is something they will never forget. >> it is really sad seeing that, yes. you know, my condolences to the family. >> reporter: yes. >> hope and pray the best for their family that lost that child. our thoughts and prayers are for them. >> reporter: she is from north carolina here in san jose visiting family. we are also told one of the fire crews that responded to this morning's fire is one of those slated to be closed here in san jose next month. in san jose, i'm paul chambers,

ktvu, channel 2 news. a trial date has been set to decide if the autopsy results from sandra cantu's death should ever be unsealed. the cantu family in tracy has been working to keep the information about the autopsy secret. but some media outlets want that made public. autopsy relts will be kept secret in the meantime. in may, melissa huckaby pleaded guilty to killing cantu in exchange for a life sentence without parole. a 7-year-old girl is recovering from surgery tonight after she became the latest victim from a pitbull attack. the girl was bitten in the face yesterday and while she recovers, oakland animal say th already know what they will do with the dog involved in this kind of tack. ktvu's john sasaki reports. >> reporter: this is a pitbull- type dog at the animal shelter with a nasty temperament. >> his entire body is rigid. he is also challenging at the

cameraman. >> reporter: animal control would not confirm nor deny that this is the dog that attacked the girl in oakland yesterday. that child required surgery on her face. but me gan web says the dog's days are numbered. >> he is not a comfortable dog. >> what are you going to do with him? >> he will be euthanized. >> yet web is the first person to say that aggressive behavior is not the fault of the breed. she showed us this dog of an example of a pit-type animal that was friendly and clearly scared by the camera. >> his body is soft. he is wiggling at the back of his back. he is very soft and very friendly. >> reporter: web says its the owner who is turn their dogs into dangerous animals. odd requests from perspective pet owners are common. >> we have people coming in looking for an aggressive dog that's what they want. >> what do they say?

>> they will go up to the kennel to see if the dogs try to attack them. >> that doesn't acknowledge the horrid ways of raising dogs that can turn them into weapons. they would not blame pit bulls but the dogs concern them. >> how do you react when you see pit bulls? >> a little fearful especially with our little guys. so yes, definitely some fear there. you don't know what the owner is doing, how they are treating or training them. >> reporter: the 2-year-old concord boy killed last tuesday was on the minute. >> when you take on a dog or a breed like that you had better know what you are doing, otherwising you are endangering the public. >> reporter: back in oakland we met a huge mastiff a friendly animal but about the same size as the dogs that mauled to death diane in 2001. today i talked by phone with her partner sharon smith about thursday's fatal attack. >> she told me she couldn't

think of anything more sad. believing that pitbull ownership requires different responsibilities, she said having five of them together as was the case in concord, is insane. in richmond, i'm john sasaki, ktvu, channel 2 news. one of the men san francisco police say got into a shoot-out with officers is still on the run tonight. the shooting happened yesterday at around 5:30 in the morning. officers tried to stop a car they believed had been carjacked. but the driver with a passenger inside took off leading officers on a chase. the car crashed on arkansas street where police say one of the suspects started firing a at officers. they fired back but no one was hit. officers arrested one of the suspects while the other escaped on foot. >> violent crime and police layoffs oakland is finding enthusiasm nor national night out. it is to encourage neighbors to get to know one another. the aim is to bring them closer to make them safer.

they are 100 block parties short of its goal of 150. it will be held on august 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. registered neighbors are allowed to block off the streets to make room for big crowds. bp denies it but by this time tomorrow it is widely expected tony hayward will be out as the company's ceo. u.s. government sources confirm the oil giant is replacing the embattled executive whose handling of the oil disaster became a pr disaster. ktvu's deborah villalon is live with who is said to be replacing him. deborah? >> reporter: well, his ouster has been rumored before, maureen but this time it seems solid. tony hayward will get his life back after all. >> there is no one wants this over i would like my life back. >> reporter: his most infamous gaff the big chief in the early weeks of the disaster also

called it a small spill compared to the size of the gulf. and said he didn't believe scientists who detected large plumes of oil polluting down deep. >> he went -- right after the explosion he went out and he has been dealing with the response ever since. >> reporter: just last month bp's chairman was still defending hayward even as he replaced him with american executive bob dudly as the point man on cleanup. dudly could now succeed hayward as ceo. >> mr. hayward this is a picture of an oiled pelican. >> the end may have been written when hayward went before a congressional committee and deflected blame for the spill saying he was out of the loop managing the well that blew. >> i wasn't involved in any of the decision making. >> so you are failing to cooperate with other investigators as well? because they are going to have a hard time reaching conclusions if you stonewall them, which is what we seem to be getting today. >> i am not stonewalling. i simply was not involved in the decision making process.

. the nation's largest lutheran group made history today. and it happened here in the bay area. more than a half dozen gay clergy members were the first group to be welcomed back into the chump after a policy that had banned them for more than a decade was changed. ktvu's david clemson reports from san francisco. [ music ] >> reporter: a hardy welcome for those who came to celebrate the right of reception today as the church of america officially says welcome to

seven openly gay pastors. the move comes after a vote by the church leadership last august to allow gay, lesbian, by sexual and transgender clergy to be ordained even if non-sell bait as long as they are in a committed relationship. >> reporter: today's ceremony is the end result of decades of work to change church policy and allow non-celibait openly lgb pastors to serve. these were the first 20 years ago to fight old church policy and allowed these three openly gay pastors to serve in their san francisco churches. they called today a vindication. >> it always felt very good about what we did. and i knew that one day, i hoped i would livelong enough to see it and i have, that the church would come around. >> reporter: of the accept pastors being welcomed today six are being received to the church for the first time.

but one reverend ross of oakland had been expelled and now being reinstated. he says he recognizes that just because there is a policy change it doesn't mean lutheran churches will easily accept gay clergy. >> the change now to a point is that glbt clergy will be more open, the avenues of having a call will be received. i mean none of us are naive to think that every church is going to be wanting a glbt clergy. >> now the church in america is a place where openly gay and lesbian people can serve and be transparent about their families and their children can be raised. >> reporter: this is the first of the celebrations to welcome these new clergy into the lutheran church. >> u.s. a few weeks ago another protestant church also voted to allow openly gay to be

determine the actual value. definitely a learning experience. >> well, i've got my fingers crossed. i will know in ten days. >> sandra endso, washington. a bay area teenager has died from drowning in a popular lake in the sierra. it happened yesterday while the boy was swimming with friends at schaffer like 50 miles northeast of fresno. disappeared 30 minutes after entering the water. bystanders got him out but couldn't revive him. the coroner has identified the boy as 16-year-old robert maldonado of new york. an autopsy is being performed. they recommend wet suits for swimming in mountain lakes which can be very cold compared to beach temperatures. a big reward is posted for information about what happened to two u.s. sailors missing in the afghan desert. did the taliban abduct them? and find out how an immigration reform law could have an impact on same sex couples and their rights. >> the bay area will be cooling

military training yesterday despitthreats of retaliation from north korea. it involved the uss george washington uss carrier. 20 ships and submarines, 200 aircraft and some 8,000 troops. the four day joint exercise is considered the largest ever held involving two countries. a massive air and ground search underway in afghanistan to try to find two missing navy men, soldiers are manning check points and going door to door in searches in a wide ebbing area outside of kabul where the sailors disappeared late friday after leaving their base. the u.s. has posted a $20,000 reward. the taliban says it captured one of them but the other was killed in a firefight. joint chief chairman mike mullen spoke only in generality about the delicate situation. >> there is a tremendous amount of effort going on to find them, to search. and beyond that, i wouldn't -- i can't discuss any additional details at this point in time.

[trumpet playing "reveille" fades to silence . in southern california, residents are demanding more resignations after three top officials in the working class city of bell recently quit because of their sky-high salaries. protestors marched today demanding that several city council members and the mayor also quit. the uproar follows the la times article that made national headlines. it revealed that the city manager robert risso was making more than $787,000 a year. he resigned along with the highly paid assistant city manager and police chief. a provision in the proposed immigration reform law is getting new attention.

watts of any bay area city last year. and was second in the total number of solar energy systems. the city encourages solar installations with its green building ordinance and the solar city's program that promotes jointly with dublin and pleasantton. >> a man attending comic con was arrested amidst strange circumstances. he is accused of attacking another attendee with a pen. the man attacked his friend for sitting too close to him. the victim sustained a scratch near his eye and had to be taken to the hospital. the alleged attacker was arrested and booked for assault with a deadly weapon. police say the two were waiting for a preview and panel discussion of two upcoming sci- fi movies, cowboys and aliens. the altercation delayed the presentation for about 45 minutes. the irs reportedly has filed a $111,000 tax lien against lieutenant governor

able maldonado. the second time he has been slapped with a lien. it says he owes on his family's 6,000-acre ranch. but his spokesman says it stems from a dispute over whether vehicles at the ranch are for business or personal use. he is running in november to keep his job as lieutenant governor against san francisco mayor gavin newsome. san jose police minutes ago put out a public appeal for help to try to find a missing 10-year-old boy. investigators say alexander morales disappeared from his family's yard on cornwall drive at 4:30. he is described as four feet one inch tall, 85 pounds and wearing a black t-shirt with white wings on the front, dark blue sweat pants and black shoes. police hope anyone who knows where he is will give the san jose police a call. it is not quite the bay to breakers, but tens of thousands of runners took part in today's san francisco marathon. a little more professional. find out who won.

music. >> the big weather story seems like it has been repeating quite a bit over the past few weeks. once again in the bay area we are cooling off. that trend will continue at least over the next 2-3 days. on the map i can show you on live stormtracker 2 that fog hugging a good portion of the shoreline and pushing back into the bay. for san francisco already a few patches out towards the east bay as well. for oakland. as we do head to the south the clouds are centered near
