tremendous. >> reporter: san quentin officials say another inmate came up behind shaffer in the prison reception yard yesterday morning and stabbed him several times. they don't know why. the suspect is another bay area man, frank anthony souza a tattoo artist who has been at the prison since january. sentenced to 60 years to life for killing a homeless man in san jose in 2007. authorities say uza used a homemade metal prison weapon. >> the weapon is identified at a bone crusher. it's a piercing type of weapon that's pretty sophisticated. >> reporter: authorities are now investigating the first inmate killing here at san quentin since 1997. reporting live at san quentin state prison, rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. a fairfield mother was charged today in the deaths of four children in an apartment

fire. 24-year-old shatarra williams pled not guilty in a fairfield court today to involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. her sister leticia james pled not guilty to the same charges earlier this month. women's three children and james' child died when candles sparked a fire in their apartment. the children had been left unattended. the woman accused of taking part in the killing of a man was arraigned this afternoon. police say housley confessed to participating in the shooting death of 45-year-old kang. police say housley and her boyfriend george huggings robbed kang and a friend as they left a dental office on july 18th. kang was supposed to go to a job interview at google the next day. huggins arrangement is set for tomorrow. san francisco police tonight are looking for a group of men who stabbed someone on a

nummi platform in the bay view district. the male victimmed suffered nonlife threatening stab wounds, the attackers ran away. police are now reviewing surveillance footage. state park officials want you to look closely to a new sketch of a man who attempted to rape a woman. ktvu's robert handa joins us now, he's live with reaction and the new sketch. >> reporter: we are here in the santa cruz mountains where there are a lot of popular hiking trails and where officials are warning hikers to keep an eye out for more than just nature. there was a steady stream of visitors at castle rock state park today even though officials posted warnings and released a composite sketch of a man suspected of threatening two women hikers at gunpoint

last thursday demanding sex. officials say the man grabbed the women, but they escaped by slipping off their backpacked and running away. >> i was very scared, i didn't know that they had weapons out here. >> it made me more aware of my surroundings, just to be on the look out for that type of person. >> reporter: authorities describe the man as latino, 5'4", stocky build, clean shaven, armed with a silver weapon. >> it's a shame that someone would target people out here in nature and where people come to spend their time off. >> i have my older sister with me so it definitely made me feel safer. i won't wouldn't come out here

alone though. >> if i would keep every scary person locked up in my home, i would be miserable. this is what makes life fun, being out here in nature. >> reporter: law enforcement agencies say people should also stay alert at other trails. live in the santa cruz mountain, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. the sheriff's department is investigateing the drowning of a 6-year-old boy at a public swimming pool. it happened yesterday afternoon at the castro valley high swimming pool which was open to the public. the recreation and park district general manager said a life guard spotted the boy but the official said she did not know how long the boy had been in the pool. at least 44 people were at the pool at the time. u.s.a. swimming the governing body says that it is investigating more coaches for sexual conduct. smith filed suit in a san jose

courtroom. she claims she was molested by her swimming coach from the age of 11 to 15. u.s.a. swimming has banned 46 coaches for life. most of those for sexual misconduct. the organization now says it will determine whether to suspend another group of coaches at its national convention in september. tonight the city of belmont will consider a moratorium on massage parlors due to concerns of prostitution. the city attorney says these schools are a condowit for sex

business for the past 30 years. he says getting the street cleaned up has brought a lot more business. quan lee also remembers what it used to be. >> a lot of gun on the floor, graffiti all over. >> reporter: this block has been a special district since 2006. tomorrow board of supervisors budget and committee will vote on legislation to renew it. many hope to renew the district to more of mission street. there are ten special assessment districts already in the city. many mission district residents think the idea is a good one. >> when you have a block that looks nicer, i think when people walk through the block, then they'll, it just kind of rubs off on people and they'll take care to keep the block nicer too. >> reporter: this block has taken in about $85,000 in taxes

over the last year. different districts identify different priorities. some offered to pay for security guards, plants or even marketing plants. sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. american consumers are becoming even more pessimistic about the economy. the look in july rose by nearly four points to 50.4. the decline followed last month's dramatic drop of 10 points. news of declining consumer confidence caused a mixed day of trading on wall street. the dow jones industrial average closed up 12 points. however the nasdaq closed the day down. a 9-year-old boy on his way from sfo to his mother's house in canada is left stranded for hours in an airport. find out what united airlines is saying about the incident.

manny was accused of giving evidence to wikileak. the justice department is joining the pentagon in the investigation. united airlines has apologized to the parents of the boy who was stranded in the airport for eight hours. united employees fail to get the boy on his flight to canada. he was on his way to his mother's hour from his father's home here in san francisco. the boy was taken to an airport facility but airline workers failed to pick him up for his flight. almost 200 new meters are being installed in hayes valley. eventually 5,000 of them will be placed around the city. in addition to coins, the meters also accept debit and credit cards. and starting next year, wireless sensors in the streets will determine whether a parking spot is vacant and the fee will fluctuate based on demand. for example if there's a

special event in the area or based on the time of day. these are good times for whale watchers after the bay area coast. huge numbers of big whales are being reported. while the whales are stirring a lot of attention, they are also stirring a lot of concern. so much so, that officials are asking boaters here in the bay area to be extra caution. ken wayne is here to explain. >> reporter: that warning to boaters was issued after a young hump back whale was found dead floating about a mile north. the concern was that the whale was hit by a boat, the concern is that it could happen again. this video was taken saturday from a science vessel. the water was so thick with hump back whales that the boat had to stop. along with the research. >> they are certainly

concentrated. in fact, from the farelons, one of the scientist said they saw 54 animals all at the same time. >> reporter: it's natural for hump backs to feel off the islands at this time of year. but she says the whales have hit the jackpot with incredible amounts of crill. a favorite food of hump backs and other marine animals. >> it's very akin to shrimp. it's a crustacean. >> reporter: there's also a danger, this is a picture of a young hump back whale found sunday, the lacerations on the caucus are evidence of a boat strike. >> it's concerning to us that

when we lose one animal. that tragedy could have been avoided. >> reporter: that warning to boaters extends into the bay as well. several gray whales have been seen feeding in the bay in recent weeks. in marin county, ken pritchett. tony hayward is losing his job. hayward with step down october 1st and will be replaced by the first nonbritish ceo for the company. bob henly, the company is trying to prove that tough lessons have been learned due to the spill. in current county, the bull fire has consumed 5,000 acres in and around the secoia national forest since it began yesterday afternoon. the fire destroyed six homes in the town of river current overnight. the chp is escorting people into town to see what's left
