warm it up? we will have the answer. mornings on 2 starts right now. good morning to you. welcome to mornings on 2. >> good morning. it is friday, july 30th. there's a lot to tell you about. we will begin with developing news. an investigation continues right now in to a terrifying security scare that happened a couple of hours ago. a man, with a gun, burst in to the emergency room at children's hospital in oakland. ktvu has new information. >> good morning. certainly could have been worse. the hospital said the whole thing was over in eight minutes. it started 3:15 this morning when the man entered the hospital with a gun. he didn't pull it out right away. instead staff members said he milled around but obviously appeared to be intoxicated and

disoriented. he didn't pull the weapon right away and the hospital says they are not sure why he did. but when he did he briefly took a staff member hostage. the hospital is not identifying the staff member or saying what position she held in the hospital. except for the fact he was an adult he looked like any other patient. this happened 3:15 this morning. police arrived three minutes later according to the hospital. the man surrendered immediately and then he was taken in to custody. he was put on to a stretcher at that point and said don't shoot me. don't shoot me and he said i gave up. i gave up. when i spoke to the captain on the scene, captain darin allison, he tells me the man will be take on the the hospital for evaluation. that evaluation not only includes a physical but a mental evaluation, as well.

captain allison says if the man does not pass the mental evaluation he will go to john george, a psychiatric hospital in the city of san leandro. if he does, he will most likely go to jail. there -- the hospital officials said no one has seen the man before and no one is familiar with the man. so it is a mystery why he came in and what he wanted. the woman, who was briefly held hostage, was not injured at all. reporting live in oakland, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> thank you. the time is 7:03. in southern california an aggressive air attack is set to begin against a fast-moving wildfire near palmdale. we just learned 2,000 homes remain evacuated in the area called anna verdi. you are looking a at the fire that continues to burn in that area. there's 7,000-acres that have already burned since the fire

exploded yesterday afternoon. power distribution lines, two oubuildings and a hay storage building have been already lost. what you are looking at is what remains of the area the fire went through. the fire is 0% contained. wins are gusting up to 20 miles an hour and are expected to kick up this afternoon. bay area firefighters say the morning layoffs will increase the fire danger many their city. they are expected to be official lip out of a job in an hour. paul chambers is live from san jose with details on this story. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning. in the city is facing a $118 million short fall and the mayor was asking for firefighters to take a 1 a% pay decrease. that didn't happen. so dozenses of firefighters will show up and will be let go since that didn't happen. it. >> will put the community and firefighters at greater risk.

fire station 33 is slated to be closed on sunday as well as five trucks and engines to be taken out of service. yesterday mayor reed met with the san jose firefighters union. the city and union are $6 million apart on a labor contract. so far no new talks are scheduled. >> the city of san jose has lost control over employee costs. the average cost for a firefighter and police officer is doubled in the last ten years. >> reporter: with that in mind it appears a dispute may be heading to a binding arbitration which is a city charter process that allows an outside mediator to make a final decision. on tuesday, the city council will decide if the arbitration will go before voters in november. something it appears the mayor may want to happen to limit authority. the public information officer just arrived on the scene and we will have an interview with him and bring it to you and as soon as we do we very much the

it willest. -- we will have the latest. 7:05. oak land police are out there searching for suspects in two late night shootings. both happened within a half hour period, just eight miles apart. the first shooting happened just shortly after 10:00 last night at 29th and martin luther king. one man was shot there. he is expected to survive. police are still searching for suspects. the second shooting happened 30 minutes later, in the 1200 block of 82ened avenue. a gunman fired several times at the young man. we understand he's listed in critical condition. so far there have been no arrests and police don't think the two shootings are connected. time 7:06. a 17-year-old girl is among two suspects arrested and accused in the execution-style shooting of two young hayward men during a robbery. it happened on west park street. the victims were forced to lay

down on the street and were shot several times with an assault rifle. police arrested 21-year-old isaiah washington the night of the shootings and yesterday a fremont girl was arrested in connection with the case. relatives of the victims talked about the arrest. >> she said she would like them to suffer the way that her son suffered. she would like them to either get life in prison or even death, if that's the case. >> reporter: the death penalty is possible for the man who was arrested if he is convicted. both suspects are due in court next week. the u.s. economy had the weakest growth in almost a year. the commerce department said the gross domestic product grew 2.4% in april, may and june. that is down from 3.7% revised

number. weaker consumer spending and less growth from companies rebuilding inventories are seen as the main factor for the drop in growth. the transit labor dispute is heading to court today. the judge may decide whether or not to overturn a contract that was imposed on transit employees. the contract changed work rules and shifted hours. that angered a lot of bus drivers who have been accused of staging a sickout. they say they need concessions from the union to reduce the budget deficit. they say if the judge reinstates the old contracts, all weekend transit service could be eliminated. all right. time is 7:08. yesterday we had call train delays. do we have them today. >> we do furtherly. we have a train that's been cancelled. i'm looking at the e-mail sent from cal train. let me pull this up here. it is train 309.

overnight news, three u.s. troops died in explosions in afghanistan. this made it the deadliest month for american forces in the nine year war. at least 63 american servicemen during july. alternate is saying the latest casualties died in two separate blasts in southern afghanistan. the commanders had warned in the past the number of deaths could go up as the military ramps up the war against the taliban. meantime, the white house is reacting this morning to a pledge and a threat from the taliban to hunt down the people who were named in the wikileaks documents as informants for alternate forces in afghanistan. ktvu's allison burns is live in our washington, d.c. bureau. she has the story. >> we are tracking several new

developments this morning. first, the white house is imploring wikileaks not to post anymore of the afghanistan documents. tens of thousands of secret documents from the war zone are already on-line, and wikileaks says it has thousands more. but in the last couple of hours, white house spokesman robert gibbs went on to say they could be deeply damaging. >> we were, and still are, concerned about names, operations, tactics that are outlined in these documents that could put our soldiers at risk. >> reporter: the taliban is also warning this morning that afghan's named in the documents, suspected of being informants will be hunted down. the fbi is now getting involved and trying to figure out who's behind the leak. the 22-year-old soldier suspected of being involved is in custody, and he was just moved from kuwait to the military base here at quantico, virginia. reporting live from washington, d.c., allison burns, ktvu,

welcome back. we want to update you on a story you will be following. a gunman burst in to the emergency room at children's hospital in oakland. the terrifying incident is raising security questions. craig is joining us live from oakland with the update. good morning, craig. >> good morning, claudia. just very briefly. it is not clear what the hospital can do to stop somebody from walking in to an emergency room. after all, they are a hospital. a shocking and scary experience early this morning for some emergency room workers. everybody's okay now. a man walks in there with a gun. it a all happened 3:15 this morning. the hospital says from start to finish it took eight minutes. the hospital says when the man walked in to the hospital he appeared to be intoxicated

ordisoriented and he didn't pull the weapon right away. when he did, the hospital is not sure why he did. the motive is unclear. the suspect briefly held a staff member against her will. children's hospital says the security team called police. they say the guards followed the instruction and their training to the letter. and so did the health care workers. >> certainly folks interacted with the person because he was impaired and seemed to need help. there was definitely conversation. people were trying to assess what was going on. >> reporter: police say when they arrived on the scene the man instantly gave up. then, in order for them to be sure they had the right man, they showed a light in his face so the person held against her will could identify him. she did. the man gave up without physical inerincident. while they were securing the suspect he yelled don't shoot me and i gave up. police say they were taking him

to be evaluated. reporting live in oakland, channel 2 news. >> thank you. time is 7:31. this morning we are getting an exclusive look at a horrifying attack that happened near a muni stop. ktvu's jade hernandez is live in san francisco. this is story here only on channel 2. good morning. >> reporter: new exclusive video revealed to us gives us a better idea of what happened before and after a stabbing near a muni platform in the bay view district on tuesday. we now have exclusive video from one of our sources. authorities determine what led up to an early morning stabbing. it happened at 3rd street and kirk wood on tuesday. it appears from the video a discussion between two men escalated. police believe the suspect argued with his victim and then left and came back with a group of friends and stabbed a man he originally exchanged words.

later that afternoon, police arrested fred taylor, a 50-year- old san francisco man they say is responsible for the stabbing. police arrested him a block from where the stabbing took place. the victim was stabbed three times and take on the the hospital. he is expected to be all right. both men are familiar with the neighborhood and are known to a hang out in the bay view district according to police. riders may have noticed delays on tuesday after the stabbing. muni halted service on the line while police searched for the stabber. the victim who was with his girlfriend at the time of the stabbing has not been cooperative with police. this video shows activity and hopefully more people know they can get caught they will participate in illegal activities. reporting live in san francisco, jade hernandez, channel 2 news. >> the time is 7:33. police in alameda are continuing their investigation after a body was found floating near a beach yesterday. police say the victim, described as a 25year -old asian man who lived in alameda

was found the water near robert w. crown memorial state beach. if you have any information about this contact the east bay regional park police. in concord, police are searching for two men who tried to kidnap a woman off the street. investigators say the woman was walking along sunshine drive around 11:00. a car pulled alongside her and a passenger inside the of the car told her to get in. police say the woman refused but a man grabbed her. she says she punched the suspect and then ran away. one suspect is described as latino in his 20s, 5'7" between 150 to 165-pounds with medium length brown hair. right now firefighting planes and 500 firefighters on the ground are attacking that out of control wildfire down in los angeles county.

about 2000 homes are still under mandatory evacuation orders. this is near palm dale. officials say at least 7,000- acres have burned since the fire exploded yesterday afternoon and we want to show you new video. this is new. this is a nearby transmitter tower. it's on fire. some of the embers apparently spread and now that transmitter tower is on fire. two out buildings and a hay storage building have been losted in the fire. firefighters still haven't been able to figure out how many homes have been lost in this. the fire is at 0% contained. it is not contained at all. and you can see, given the idea of the winds that's gusting up to 20 miles an hour is expected by this afternoon. arizona authorities are providing extra security for a federal judge in phoenix because of her ruling on a controversial immigration law. officials say the judge susan bollen has received thousands of phone calls and e-mails

since her preliminary injunction on wednesday that puts key provisions of the anti- illegal immigration law on hold. and authorities say some of those messages sent to the judge are 0 positive and others perverted. no word on what kind of extra security they are providing. the hoopla over the law isn't stopping the local sheriff from containing with his crackdowns on illegal immigrants. the sheriff is known as the king of local immigration enforcement and yesterday about the same time protesters stopped outside of the sheriffs office he sent 200 deputies and trained deputies in search of traffic violaters who maybe

here illegally. the sheriff says it is his job to control what he calls a steady stream of illegal immigrants in to his county. oracle is being accused of fraud and breach of contract by the u.s. justice department. federal investigators say

oracle gave the government less favorable contracts than it did other businesses and that resulted in the government overpaying by hundreds of millions of dollars. these charges are based on information from a former oracle employee who filed a whistle-blower complaint three years ago. so far, oracle has made no comment on that lawsuit. three people, including two from walnut creek have been indicted on charges of bribery and bid rigging in a scheme to allegedly defraud cal-trans of $1.2 million. according to the fbi then walnut creek and their company are acaused of bribing an official with money and other

too. look at this numbers the dow is up 12 points. things were down this morning with the gdp report that came in and said the economy is growing but at a slower rate

than expected. we got a private report from in from reuter and the university of michigan that says consumer sentiment is at the lowest level in nine months. we will have an eye on the numbers all morning long. two men who work for the u.s. embassy in paris are undergoing medical tests after handling a suspicious letter. the employees were unwell after the incident. they didn't elaborate. the letter is being examined by chemical experts but a preliminary analysis suggests it is not harmful. it is not known where the letter came from or what was deemed suspicious about it. we will be watching the gulf of mexico this weekend as crews try again to plug that broken oil well. it is a trial procedure called a static kill and they will try it as early as sunday. unlike the other attempts to stop the spill, the experts say this one may actually do it. the process involves filling

the leak with cement and it is the preferred method for capping a well. industry experts say even though no more oil appears to be getting out of the well since the cap was put in place, cementing the well shut will close it permanently. some b.p. gas station owners are pushing for the company to a change its name here in the united states. they have seen sales drop as much as 40% as drivers protest that big oil spill. they want b.p. to go back to the old amoco name that was dropped when b.p. bought the stations the owners say there's a lot of good will left in the old symbol that you saw in the midwest and the west coast. here it is sold under the arco brand name. new rules will make it harder for pg&e disconnect service. they approved rules to help people struggling with the recession and unemployment. among them, utilities must inform late customers about payment plans and new limits on

deposits for low-income customers and those trying to have service reconnected. last year they shut off service to 272,000 customers. that's up from 185,000 in 2006. free clinic will be held today in martinez to vaccinate against whooping cough. yesterday in concord, 500 shots were given at this outdoor clinic and farmers market. it is a respiratory infection. and respiratory officials announced a 1-month-old baby died from the disease making the baby the 7th baby to die in the state. in each case, the whooping cough was spread by a relative. i don't want them to get it. i do child care so we are all getting it. >> they blame the outbreak on more parents declining vaccinations and say it runs in cycles. we did check out how widespread it is nationwide.

the hospital. he didn't immediately produce the weapon. hospital workers notice immediately the man was disoryened or intoxicated. the hospital says the workers tried to help him. no one knows why but the suspect pulled his gun and tried to hold a worker against her will. a spokesperson called it a rare event. >> we are part of neighborhood and work with our neighbors an the neighbors appreciate us being here and part of their neighborhood but there is a lot of mutual respect an we are synergistic with the neighborhood. >> reporter: hospital security called police. they arrived in eight minutes, according to the hospital. the man gave up right away. because of the state of mind the man was put on a gurney. police held his head up or lifted the incline part of the verdi so the victim in this case could identify the man. he was identified and the man was officially taken in to custody. no one was hurt in the understand den. police say the man will be

evaluated and depending how the evaluation turns out he will be taken to jail or john george psychiatric hospital in san san leandro. >> thank you. our time is 8:01. in southern california homes are threatened this morning by an out of control wildfire burning near palm dale. 7,000-acres have been burned. 1,000 homes remain evacuated. evacuation orders have been lifted in rancho vista. about 500 firefighters and planes are out there trying to fight this fire. a short time ago, we saw a dc 10 tanker make the first drop out there. the temperatures are cool. winds are calm right now. but that is expected to change this afternoon. the winds are expected to pick up. the temperatures are expected to be, turnly in the high 90s. that's not good. the fire is about 5% surrounded right now.

in the meantime some bay area firefighters are saying this morning's layoffs will increase the fire danger in their city. just moments ago they wrapped up their final shift. ktvu's paul chambers is joining us live in san jose where a news conference just ended. good morning, paul. >> good morning. the interim fire chief just talked about the layoffs and how this will afc the police -- i keep saying police, i apologize will affect the force here in san jose. the fire union chief is here and he will talk in a few minutes. basically this is a big deal. a lot of the officers, a lot of the fire officials have just been let go. >> we know it's going to put the community at risk, the property at risk and then the firefighters at greater risk. >> reporter: in all more than 50 of the city's 700 plus firefighters will be let go. fire station 33 is slated to be closed on sunday, as as well as five trucks and engines will be taken out of service. mayor reed met with san jose

fire unions. the city and union are $6 million apart on a labor contract and so far no new talks are scheduled. >> the city of san jose lost control over employee costs. the average cost for a firefighter and police officer is doubled in the last ten years. >> reporter: now it appears it may be heading to binding arbitration. a city process that allows an outside mediator to make a final decision. the continental cowill decide if it will go before voters in november. something the mayor would like to see happen to limit the arbitrators authority. coming up we will have word from the interim fire chief and also word from the fire union. fishes will give you information on what is going on. once again the fire officials just got off of their shift and are here at the training facility turning in their gear and badges and hopes that further negotiations could bring them back to their jobs. live in san jose, k, vu, channel 2 news. >> thank you for the update.

certainly a tough day. oakland police are searching for suspects in two separate late-night shootings. both happened within a half hour of each other, eight miles apart. the first happened shortly after 10:00 a.m. at 29th street and martin luther king one man is shot and expected to survive. police are searching for suspects in that case. the second shooting happened 30 minutes later on the 1200 block of 82nd avenue. police say a gunman fired several times at a young man who is now listed in critical condition and so far there have been no arrests in that case either. police say at this point they don't believe the two shootings are connected. a 17-year-old girl is among two suspects arrested and accused in the execution-style killing of two young men during a robbery. this happened in may on west park street. the victims were forced to lay in the street and then shot several times with an assault

rifle. police arrested 21-year-old isaiah washington of oakland the night of the shootings. yesterday a 17-year-old fremont girl was arrested in this case. relatives of the victims talked about those arrests. >> she said she would like them to suffer the way that her son suffered. she would like them to either get life in prison or even death, if that is the case. >> reporter: the death penalty is possible for the man who was arrested. if he is convicted, both suspects are due in court next week. the u.s. economy had the weakest growth in a year. the gross domestic product grew 2.4% in april, may and june and that's down considerably from the first quarter revised number of 3.7%. weaker consumer spending and less growth in companies rebuilding inventories are the primary factors for that

in overnight news, three u.s. troops died in explosions

breaking news coming in now from los angeles. we're now told a natural gas explosion has injured people at a commercial building. the blast was so strong the victims were hurled in to the streets. some of them reportedly were trapped underneath parked cars. the fire search and rescue teams are on the scene. they are searching the collapsed building looking for more victims. this happened after 6:00 at a two-story building that houses a welding operation. we will have more details on this explosion in los angeles as that information comes in. also this morning, we are getting an exclusive look at a horrifying attack that happened in the bay area near a muni stop. ktvu's jade hernandez is live in san francisco. this is a story you will only see here on channel 2. jade, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the reason we obtained this exclusive video is to show more people that what happened near

and on muni platforms is comed and what the video is shown is taken from a muni platform camera. there's no sound on this video, but what we do see on this video is a man with his girlfriend, talking to his girlfriend. he then kicked and falls to the ground. you can see this from the screen. his girlfriend rushes to hold on to him. what we know is this happened on tuesday morning in the bay view district around 10:00. the actual stabbing happens after the victim was kicked near the third street and kirk wood. the stabbing did not happen on the platform. but you can see the victim on the video being dragged off the street and a crowd which gathered dispersed. officially, san francisco police say a fight broke out between two men and then the victim was stabbed three times. riders may have noticed delays after the incident because muni briefly halted service on the 2 third line while police search insider the suspected stabber. the video shows paramedics

the last shift ended for dozens of now laid off bay area firefighters. ktvu's paul chambers is in san jose. the news conference just ended. what's the latest, paul? >> there are new figures and numbers coming out t at 8:00 this morning the firefighters, the first phase of firefighters will happen today, tomorrow and in to sunday. as we know right now, 49 fire officials have been let go. the city of san jose is facing $118 million budget deficit. the mayor asked the fire department union to cut pay by 10%. however, that agren fell apart. so, now, as i said, 49 of the city's 700 plus firefighters will be laid off by sunday. also we're told two fire stations, fire station 33 and fire stations 30 is slated to be closed on sunday as well as four trucks that will be taken out of service. mayor chuck reed with met with the an show say firefighters

union who said the layoffs will put the city and union at risk. no new talks are scheduled. so it appears a dispute may be heading to binding arbitration which is city charter process that allows an outside mediator to make the final decision. on tuesday they will decide if the binding arbitration will go before voters in november. it appears the mayor may want that to happen to limit the arbitrators ' authority. in the last half hour the union president and interim fire, this is what they had to say. >> we will continue to fight for their jobs, today, tomorrow, in to next month. and do everything we can to get them an opportunity to come back. >> this is a great loss to our organization. realizing these actions have touched everyone, we will continue to focus our energy on what we do best and that is to serve this community with professionalism, integrity, trust, pride and compassion.

that could mean about 100 jobs may be in limbo. arizona authorities are providing extra security for a federal judge in phoenix because of her ruling on the controversial immigration law. they say judge susan bolton has received thousands of phone calls and e-mails since her preliminary injunction on wednesday. that injunction put key provisions of the anti- imitation graduation law on hold and authorities say while some of the messages sent to the judge are positive, others are perverted. to word on what kind of extra security they are providing. meanwhile the hoopla over the law isn't stopping the sheriff from continuing with his crackdown on illegal immigrants. the mary cope what county sheriff is known as the king of local immigration enforcement and yesterday about the same time protesters made a top stud of his office, the sheriff said 200 deputies and trained volunteers in search of traffic violaters who may be here illegally. the sheriff says it is his job to control a steady stream of illegal immigrants in to his

county. oracle is being accused of fraud and breach of contract by the u.s. justice department. federal investigators say oracle gave the government less favorable contracts than it did other businesses. that resulted in the government overpaying by hundreds of millions of dollars. these charges are based on information coming from a former oracle employee who filed a whistle-blower complaint three years ago. so far, oracle has made no comment on the lawsuit. three people including two from walnut creek have been dined on charges of bribery and bid rigging in a scream scheme to allegedly defraud caltrans of $1.2 million. the fbi says the walnut creek residents, with their company, info tech associates are accused of bribing a sacramento's cal-trans official with money and other gifts in exchange for cal-trans contracts. if convicted the suspects could get up to 35 years in prison and could be forced to pay $2.4

problems and now captivity is taking its toll. what do you think is happening? and what's your plan for what's next? >> i'm glad you brought that up. that's what we are focusing on now it has been a year and 365 days of detainment has mental and physical tolls, you know, that are going to affect our friends and my friend sara actually has some health conditions that are not being addressed and we have requested medical attention and that hasn't happened. so we are very frustrated and saddened and concerned that it has gone on this long and the kind of affect it will have on their lives when they get out since they are innocent. >> reporter: when we saw the vids with their mothers going over and felt that should have been a turning point. do you feel there is any momentum heading to another -- either another meeting or, obviously their release? >> as frustrated as we are

there has been no movement, we maintain hope because we have have had glimmers of hope such as the vidses with the mother and some spokes people from the iranian government tell us that this shouldn't be a political case. this these people should be treated as a humanitarian issue, which it is and they should be released but unfortunately the process is so slow we don't know what is going on. >> tell us what you are doing on this end. you have rallies planned. tomorrow is the anniversary. what have you planned as far as an effort to show support here on the home front? >> well, we have vigils and protests and raleighs and, you know, music events happening all over the country actually in 12 different u.s. city and all over the world in london and spain and india. we have been supported by people all over the world, which has been heartening and helpful to us. so we are actually meeting in san francisco on saturday to invite the press and to invite speakers and friends and family

welcome back. we want to update you on the wildfires in southern california. we are now learning that there are no homes in imminent danger

and that's good news. you are looking at life pictures near palm dale, los angeles county. this is a fire they have been concerned about because they asked people in 2,000 homes overnight to leave. we are told those families have now returned to their homes. so that's good news. as you can see there's a lot of fire left to fight. we are also learning more about the man killed in a motorcycle accident on highway 17 overnight. police say he is 31 years old. the crash happened just before 10:00 last night on northbound 17, which is south of redwood drive. the victim's motorcycle went out of control and crashed in to the center divide. he was ejected on the roadway and killed. northbound traffic was shut down but it did reopen just after 2:00 this morning. the victim's name has in the been released. time is 8:55. mess coe's military says it killed a top member of one of the most powerful drug cartels. niche officials say the principal leader of an organization was killed in a gun battle with soldiers
